(CNN) - Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.
In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.
"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.
The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.
"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.
The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.
According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.
The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.
Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.
Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.
Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.
His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.
See what good healthcare can do for you??
Good luck Bush. You may be the reason I and many others lost our jobs and everything else but I'm resilient so I harbor no grudges. Get well soon.
I didn't know he had a heart.
What heart???
How do you put a stent in the heart of "man" that has no heart – nor no brain, for that matter... GWB is one of the most evil leaders this world has ever known.
I almost never comment on these "let's pray for so-and-so" stories, but it's worth noting that being Emperor of the World carries health risks. By all accounts, Dubya was (is) in phenomenal physical shape for a man his age. Recall how he tried to spend a good amount of his terms as president vigorously cutting down trees and such on his ranch. He's also a big jogger.
So was Clinton, despite a penchant for junk food. Yet these guys have clogged arteries. Expect to hear about heart problems with Obama (he still smokes, as far as I know) within the next 5 or so years.
Being Emperor of the World is stressful and causes heart problems.
I am a democrat ... ..I wish you the best of health in the years to come Mr Bush
Cracks me up. He wants everyone to get their checkups but doesn't want everyone to have healthcare. He must be talking to his Rebublican base. Oh, when God gets his hands on you...........
Hope he is doing well.
Get well soon Dub ya
Wishing former Presidnet George W Bush a speedy recovery. A little more salads and vegetables and a little less red Texas meat will help.
Looks as old as his daddy.
Get regular check ups, Mr. President? Why I certainly would if I had the Presidential health care plan. Typical Richie Rich who understands nothing about what real life is all about.
Wow...I'm pretty surprised, given how fit he is. Clearly there must be a hereditary component....
I didn't realize he was 67. I was thinking maybe younger he always had a boyish look about him.
Get well soon.
Definitely never voted for the guy and I wish we could erase the political damage done... Still, I have to admit he's been nothing but classy since leaving office. Get well.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
What if Bush needed to get his heart replaced by a stem cell derived transplant? I'd find that funny cause Bush banned any federal funding that could have saved time on this essential r and d. Other than that Bush never addressed health-care for the rest of the population cause the prices kept increasing under his and Clinton's umbrellas as president's with no sign of stoppage.
All Hail King George!
Prayers to Mr. Bush and his family. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Bet all you 0 voters wish G.W. Bush were back in office, eh? Hope and Change never panned out, did it? Idiots.
A heart! Who knew...?
It probably is that Texas diet. Nevertheless, I wish him well.
And here come all of the nasty liberals out to make heart comments. You people are truly sad and divisive. Is there anything you do other than hate?
We're praying for you Mr. Bush. The everyday person can't imagine the stress that some one goes through while the POTUS. Decisions must be made daily that can effect every single person in this country and with that comes a great deal of responsibility. I believe that you always made the decision you felt was in the best interest for this country and thank you for your service. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
What a bunch of sour, petty, chip-on-their-shoulder Americans I see posting on here. Expected nothing less.
