Bush undergoes heart procedure

(CNN) - Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.

In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.

The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.

"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.

The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.

According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.

The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.

Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.

Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.

Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.

His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.

Speedy recovery so you can stand trial at the Hague for your war crimes, you sorry sack of ...well, you know. He could have prevented 9/11 if he heeded intell. But didn't. So conservatives think he is such a great guy. G.W. Bush. Liar, War Criminal, traitor to the American people. Yes, good health but quick, speedy trial at the Hague for you and Cheney. You folks that say he was a great man just make me laugh.

Wish you speedy recovery and all the health. I see lot of negative comments against him. Only an i-diot-ic, m-o-ron or partisan liberal can such derogatory comments. In front of O-b-ama, GWB is like God. He kept us safe. We were in great economic shape till democrats took control of congress in 2006. His counterparts around the world envied him for getting US back on its feet without their help. World wanted weaker US and they found a leader in O-b-ama who surrenders to them. That's why they like. GWB didn't do anything without the consent of the congress. We are in much worse shape than 2009 whether be economics, country unity, respect around the world, healthcare, security, spirituality to name a few.

I am not sure we need to have all this knowledge about President Bush;s health. This is just a little too much info and really he deserves some privacy now that he is retired.

It is time to stop all of the name-calling and the nasty messages about any President. If you do not have something nice to say then say nothing. Use your vote to show how you feel or write to the President to state your thoughts. It is never necessary to smear anyone's name. For the record Jimmy Carter has been smeared many times over the last three years. President Obama was perceived to be a one-term President and the same adjectives were used against him.

Can we find a way to criticize without being nasty. We are supposed to be an educated and civil society.

Maybe he needs to be taking more vacations in places like Martha's Vineyard instead of building village hospitals in Africa.

When Obama went to Africa it was to be there for a photo op in case Mandela died. GW Bush was in Africa the same time actually helping Africans.

I have a question. What branch of government actually controls the economy? The correct answer would be the Legislative Branch! So why then do we credit Clinton for a surplus, when it was the Congress? Why do we blame Bush for a recession, when it was the Congress?
    --------
Bush is blamed because it was the policy that he had campaigned on. It was Bush who gave a speech where he apologized to the nation for what he was about to do, which was to turn a surplus into a deficit for "long term economic growth". Yes, the Congress may have written and passed the bills, but Bush had fully endorsed the tax cuts and signed them into law. He had veto power, but didn't use it. Did he?

For similar reasons, Clinton is given credit for having stood up to the Gingrich House. Clinton fought off the austerity cuts that the animal house wanted to enact. The severe cuts would have surely slowed, if not stalled, the economy, which is exactly what is happening now with the sequestered cuts. The economic engine has had a cylinder turned off, which is unsustainable.
    --------
I appreciate your answer but the Congress controls the economy, not the president. You mentioned the veto but said nothing about the ability of the Congress to over ride that veto! We cannot "honestly" blame a president and turn around and credit another when the ONLY constant is the Congress! I fully understand presidents "sets the tone"

I was hoping of an answer devoid of a political slant! Anyway, if Congress had to votes to override a veto, it wouldn't matter if Clinton stood up to them or not! The honest answer is Clinton did not leave a surplus, the Congress did! Bush did not leave a recession, the Congress did! Is "animal house" your attempt at a serious conversation?

Question Rudy: Who do you blame for the current economy, the president or the Congress? Yes, this is a trap question because when things were bad under a GOP president, you blame the GOP president. But when things are bad under a Dem president, what then?

It's great to see the kind words emanating from all of those "compassionate progressives" out there. Yes, GWB did permit water boarding as a means to prevent further 911 attacks. Yet our progressive president has opted to use predator drones as he runs a veritable "murder incorporated" to combat those few bad Muslims who are a threat to national security. While Bush may have used the Patriot Act to listen in on terrorist chatter around the world–our progressive president is listening in on everybody...and at least W never politicized the entire federal government–including the IRS, EPA, Office of the AG (maybe a little bit on that one...Those of us who are appreciative of your service wish you a speedy recovery Mr President. And if the current President ever were (God forbid) to have a health issue–most decent people would wish him a speedy recovery as well...and we all should be thankful of his service–regardless of our personal political views.

jshous, that's very cute. Jimmy Carter's name is never smeared even though he's alive and 33 years post presidency.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Jimmy Carter didn't lie us into two wars and drive the nation to the brink of bankruptcy. Granted, we went through a recession, but that's what happens when you spend 15 years fighting an unwinnable war. It takes years to pay those off.

I know there are a lot who despise Bush and Cheney for what they have done during their tenure as President and VP. Is it that we should put all the blames on those two people's shoulders and pretend as if we had no roles (whether directly or indirectly played) in for what that may have caused them to act in the first place. Think about our energy consumption every year. In order to meet such high demands, our politicians have very little choice other than to steal / wage wars against those resourceful countries (like Iraq and so on) from where their stolen energy can meet our ever increasing demands. Like many of you I am not a Bush lover or a Sympathizer and to a very great degree consider Bush Junior as one the worst presidents this country has ever produced. What a difference between Senior Bush and Junior Bush!!!!

You guys forgot to mention the incredible job that President Bush did in Africa to combat the spread of AIDS. In the final analysis history will determine his final legacy. Bush once said that the first president was still being assessed. And yes the Iraq war was a huge mistake–and democrats supported that effort–including Hillary Clinton.

Oh come on Independent. Liberals hate the person but republikkkans hate their policy?? Is that why Mitch stated their # 1 goal was to make Obama a one term POTUS. If you truly haven't seen the hate the right shows President Obama, your eyes are closed. Let's go back about a year......before the election during the campaign when that woman told Santorum to pretend it was Obama he was shooting at, or Ted Nugent the hick that stated if President Obama was reelected that he, Nugent, would either be dead or in prison. As for the comments right here, apparently there was an assassination plot and several of the RWNJ's that post here said too bad they didn't succeed. I don't know about you but that's wishing the POTUS dead to me. As for Bush, like I stated, I was one of the millions that lost everything in 2008, but I would never wish anyone dead. I do feel be, Cheney, Rummy and Condi ought to be in prison for war crimes though.
