Bush undergoes heart procedure

(CNN) - Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.

In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.

The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.

"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.

The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.

According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.

The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.

Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.

Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.

Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.

His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.

What heart? This miserable family has messed with our country enough. And let's never hear about Jeb Bush for president either. A favorite slogan on Texas highways is, 'Don't mess with Texas.' Well, don't mess with us any more. Maybe he'll take long enough to recover so we won't hear anything about him for years till he's too old to bother us ever again. Wishing you a long and painful recovery!!!

I can't believe the nasty comments written today. I didn't vote for Bush, didn't agree with him on a lot but I don't dislike the man, in fact I rather like him now and I wish him the best. I'll be saying a prayer for him.

I'll never forget seeing him choke on a Pretzel & fall straight on his face after a bite of Pretzel. That was hilarious. Ahhh....the good times.

It is a pity that so many people will take any opportunity to make so many disrespectful and distasteful comments. I wish you best Mr. President.

I'm so surprised, that the Media concentrated more on his DUI that he concealed from his Family and Lied to the American Public, before the first Election, than they did about the fact that he went AWOL while he was in the National Guard. Amazing!

As an American, the president, of either party, is OUR president. Once elected, they outrank everyone else for their terms.

Yes, G.W. Bush caused a lot of pain. But he was legally elected our president, and even if he let us down, we still should respect the office and his authority.

As someone who has survived two open heart surgeries, I can only wish him good health. George, stay away from the rich desserts and keep a healthy work-out routine.

Yes, I regret the many harms that were done by him, but lets be Christians. Real Christians move on by forgiving.

So, please get well soon, President Bush.

And as far the man in Tennessee who says Barack Obama is the worst President we have ever had in office, you think about that line. Is he or is it because he is a black man in the White House which is something that has never been done in history and guess what he's there until 2016.

The President exhibited signs of this blockage for several years had you been able to observe him going up stairs...

We all know the reason he made Tax Cuts was to make up for what a Mizerable Failure his Father had become. His Father couldn't do anything right. And he thinks two wrongs can make a right.

He HAS a heart? Wow. Would not know that with all the innocent people he and Dick Cheney "sentenced" to death with the SECOND Bush war in Iraq which we were lied to in order to begin our budget deficit that will never go away. It never ceases to amaze me the US public seem to have forgotten his AWOL in the Nat. Guard back during Vietnam. I do not wish him ill-well, but I find it hard to believe he has a heart. He is the Norm Crosby of Presidents. What horrible grammar.

Must be nice to get an expensive operation like this for free thanks to his gold-plated government health insurance for him and his family for life! Ya just gotta love that "socialized medicine," right, Republicans?

  23. so what?

Wishing Bush a speedy recovery is odd, since Bush is a War Criminal and butchered innocent civilians in pursuit of solidifying USD hegemony status.

    Bush = War Criminal

The liberals scream about how conservatives hate Obama and how evil, racist and bigoted they are for doing so.

Then I read the liberal hate speech about Bush. They are the usual hypocritical mo rons we have come to expect from the left.
