Bush undergoes heart procedure

(CNN) - Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.

In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.

The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.

"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.

The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.

According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.

The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.

Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.

Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.

Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.

His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.

My husband had a stent several years ago, and has had no trouble since then: I wish Mr. Bush the same success, and a long life as a grandpa.

But please–for the love of all that is holy–stay the heck out of politics!! Dubya, you might be a good ol' boy, but you were a raving disaster in the WH, and we just now are finally starting to recover from the mess you made. Paint, not politics, for you.

Mallory Archer: kudos to you for correcting all those bad posts. Well done, sir. Well done.

Left-wing liberal here with nice things to say about George W. Bush:
    – he was a pretty handsome guy back in the day!
    – hope he gets well soon!
    – may not have liked many of his policies while in office, but have really respected his policy of not criticizing the administration that followed him.
Personally, I really appreciate it when people can overlook politics when someone is ill or hurting.
    Get well, Mr. Bush!

To all you republicans who say democrats are hateful and vicious, we are very much suffering the results of eight years of George and Dick policies-and you all know it.
Congressional democrats could have said no, no, and filibuster to our tax money covering his health care for his stint. Also, Congressional democrats could have legislated it on the floor 40 times before allowing his procedure to take place. That seems to be the way things have been done in the last five years by the repugs to keep this country from going forward. Maybe reconsider who has been filled with hate and evil to keep a President from accomplishing good things for this country? Dems don't cater to only the wealthy; however, we do wish Georgie Porgie well.

All the liberals are wishing this man the worst. Take a look at your country now, people.....Obama is the worst. president.ever. It will take twice as many republicans to clean up his mess. I don't see any end in sight...makes me want to move to my own island. He is an embarrassment to the world.

How dare you make comment on how much GWB spent on his own healthcare, while Obama is spending your retirement money and mine on his family vacations...with multitudes of staff staying in the best resorts. Pleeeease. Somehow, this never makes the news. He and his family travel quite stylishly. Look it up.

Isn't it fascinating that W and his controller, Cheney, both have had the privilege of heart surgeries while both still are war criminals.

    Mr. President,
I wish you a speedy recovery so you can be extradited to The Hague to face charges as a war criminal. Afterward, you can come home to be tried for treason to your country. Get well soon.

hope he stays out of politics . . . and lives his life like a normal human being . . . without all the drama . . . He's had his faults, and his positives, same as Obama / Clinton & the rest of them. Clinton's problem was the NAFTA situation, Clinton's positives was we had a surplus, at the end of his term. Reagan same way, he had positives & negatives, as with all the former potus's . . . Reagan made Gorbachev tear down the wall. But then again, Reagan never let the air traffic controllers ever forget what he'd done to them. . . After that, then the rust belt started shrinking jobs, a little bit at a time, until the American voters finally figured it out, 35 + years later, that their "jobs" wasn't there anymore. NOW, it will never be the same, thanks to the one who originally started the whole mess. (Reagan & then 41, then Clinton forced NAFTA on the country. too bad, in another 3 years or so, everyone will be fighting for a decent job, even if it's only part time, with no benefits. Pathetic I tell you, Just Pathetic . . .

Didn't like the guy, but I wish him well. Unlike the racist GOP, I saw Bush as MY president even though I am a Democrat. I didn't have pure hatred for him like the GOP has for President Obama.

One thing we can be assured of is that he received better healthcare than 99% of average Americans. After all the crap he did – free trading millions of jobs away. Starting a war in Iraq to keep buddies like Halliburton flush with cash, and handing out millions of taxpayer dollars to banks I find myself asking one question. Is there no justice?
