Bush undergoes heart procedure

(CNN) - Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.

In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.

The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.

"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.

The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.

According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.

The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.

Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.

Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.

Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.

His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.

President Bush will get the best health care the US has to offer at the taxpayers expense. Just think of the cost paid out in health care by the taxpayers for Daddy Bush and his son. No wonder our taxes are so high the wealthy and the elected lawmakers live off of regular hard working Americans and new Republicans want more, The road a head for GW is one he made for himself.

    -Silly liberals

And here come all of the nasty liberals out to make heart comments. You people are truly sad and divisive. Is there anything you do other than hate?
Another conservative with an offensive tag whining about the tone of the conversation. Its ironic that the people who have made a cottage industry out of hating President Obama complaining about a lack of civility. I've seen liberals conservatives, and self-proclaimed independents on here acting with a gross lack of respectfor both the former and current occupants of the WH: can any of you put it aside for a moment?

Regarding checkups, an annual (routine) physical, including immunizations, will cost between $200 – $500 without insurance. Some insurance plans premiums cost this much PER MONTH for health insurance, which may, or may not cover 100% of that visit. Health insurance, like every other type of insurance, is designed to be profitable for insurance companies. So do the math, put aside a couple of dollars a day, and you can have your annual physical.

Put aside a couple of dollars a day? I can tell you from personal experience that the blood work alone done in a thorough physical costs more than that. Then, what are you supposed to do when they find something wrong, as they did in Mr Bush's case.? The tests that would be ordered first to find a heart blockage and then repair it (an echocardiogram, and a heart catheterization) are going to run $25,000 or more. That's what it cost me 8 years ago. It's going to take a whole lot more than a few dollars a day.

i never refered to this idiot as 'President' and I never will – my president's are actually voted into office, not supplanted by a corrupt Supreme Court. this man was a war criminal who drove our country into the ground for profit with the help of his corporate cronies. he's responsible for hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths and the utter destruction of the middle-east. and let's not forget the Patriot Act, which has effectively gutted the Constitution, rendering us an impotent police state. i wish him nothing but what his karma deserves....and i gotta tell you....that ain't pretty.

Wow I am appalled at the idiotic negativity in this comment thread. Why do we say such hateful things to a man that had a medical issue? Do all of you just LOOK for a reason to fire on a conservative when his name is even brought up in a sentence? I'm not a republican but it's shameful that I have to see this when poor W could've died possibly if he didn't receive any medical assistance. I personally wish the best for George W. Bush and hope he has a full recovery. I never wish hurt or death upon anyone.

Is Geroge happy to have 100% tax-payer funded healt care for life... after only 8 years on the job with very poor performance Ă©valuations?

To the millions of hard working Americans with no or inadequate health insurance... sucks to be you!
Only 8 years??? Get a clue, the man worked his entire life in government, he was not just president, he held many other positions!!! To all you haters crying about health care, get a job that provides health care like the rest of us!!! It is not fun working for big companies that provide it but it is better then not having it!!! There are tons of customer service jobs out there that provide FULL benefits so take advantage, you have to start somewhere, you can always move up the ladder if you are hard working, I have seen it throughout my career working for a large corporation.

I am for univeral health care, but it needs to be for EVERYONE if we are going to have univeral care it should be TRUE universal care!!! Obamacare is NOT universal care hence why I don't support it. If we are going to have universal care we need to do it right, something similar to Canada or some of Europe maybe but what we have now is just a mess!!!
