First on CNN: DNC to vote on resolution calling on Filner to resign

Washington (CNN) – The Democratic National Committee will vote on a resolution this week calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign, ratcheting up pressure on the embattled Democrat who has been accused of sexually harassing multiple women.

Sixteen women have charged Filner of acting improperly and the mayor last month acknowledged having "failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me." He voluntarily entered a behavioral therapy program, but has refused to step down despite widespread calls for him to leave office.

While several high profile Democrats including DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz have personally called on Filner to resign as has the San Diego County Democratic Party, this is the first time the national Democratic Party will urge him to step aside.

"We cannot reassure voters that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for a champion for women unless Democrats walk our talk on equality and take firm action in accordance with our values and stand up for women by condemning his behavior and calling on him to immediately resign as Mayor of San Diego," reads a draft copy of the resolution obtained by CNN.

The five paragraph resolution, which will be voted upon at the DNC's summer meeting this week in Phoenix, seeks to distance itself from Filner by emphasizing that the Democratic Party "condemns any person who creates a hostile work place or engages in sexually harassing and humiliating behavior towards women or men."

It also urges Filner to "face the consequences of his actions, sparing his constituents the embarrassment and expense of a recall election." If he doesn't step down the DNC then asks the residents of his city to recall the mayor.

The resolution's authors are Donna Brazile, the DNC's Vice Chair of Voter Registration and Participation, and DNC member Christine Pelosi. Brazile is a CNN political contributor.

Seriously? Seriously? Here they draw the line? Not with Teddy Kennedy? Not with Bill Clinton? Not Barney Frank? Wow, what brought about this change of heart? The DNC has only been the fake, the ersatz-champion of WOMEN. They are hardly the party of inclusion. They are hardly the party of women's rights and health outside of their narrow self-interest and narrowly defined parameters. Shameless, DNC, shameless.

I love how some posters here are making anti GOP comments... I guess it was Bush not Clinton who had sex with an employee subordinate? Or it was a GOP congressman who sent pics of his junk to girls all over the country? Or it was a Republican Governor who was putting pimps in prison while he was paying prostitutes? a scumbag is a scumbag no matter which party... and only a child tries to excuse this behavior no matter who does it. We can all find better character to represent us. Not deflect blame..

  6. America Suckered Again

This has been well known about Bob Filner through a long career in National and local Democratic politics. So the DNC pipes up only after San Diegans have launched a recall petition?!?! Give me a break and cut with the fake outrage.

Now he's in trouble. The DNS is ok with it if he was able to hide most of it like Bill Clinton. I guess he's not that good.

So this is just funny. Where was the DNC when, who was it ? OH YAH – PRESIDENT CLINTON was doing the same thing, only in the Oval Office with an intern. Where was the condemnation from all of the women politicians and "walking their talk". Hypocrites to the core.

He should move to New York and run for office there. They'll vote for any freakshow as long as there's a (D) after his name.

"we are having a blast laughing at this guy while he shames the Democratic party.
We can handle our own affairs – please butt out
    San Diego resident (Clairemont)"

Interesting that you would rather spend a million dollars of taxpayer money on a recall than have the DNC pressure him to resign costing you nothing. I know a lot of San Diego residents who would like to throw you out right behind Filner.

I'll be the first one in line to say that this guy is a creep with a capital idiot. However, the DNC needs to keep its nose out of a city's business. Let the city decide what to do with this nutcase. While it might be a slight stain on the Democratic Party, does anyone remember Bill 'Zippergate' Clinton? He was present and he was a Democrat. Let's keep out of city business and deal with what is important to the country as a whole.
