GOP Rep: Impeaching Obama 'would be a dream come true'

(CNN) – Evidence of wrongdoing is about the only thing stopping Republican Rep. Kerry Bentivolio from attempting to impeach President Barack Obama, he told voters Monday.

In a YouTube video first reported by the liberal-leaning website Mediaite, Bentivolio responded to a woman during a Q&A session that "if I could write that bill and submit it," he said, moving to impeach Obama "would be a dream come true."

The first-term Representative from Michigan's 11th district was asked who would do something "to stop this runaway train that we have in the White House," by an unnamed woman off-screen.

"Who is going to stop Obama from everything that he is doing against our Constitution? He needs to be stopped," the woman said.

Bentivolio answered that he had looked at means to impeach Obama, saying "I feel your pain," particularly after hearing Obama speak at an unnamed event.

"I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him. And I couldn't stand being there," Bentivolio, a former Santa Claus impersonator, teacher and reindeer farmer.

"But because he is president, I have to respect the office."

According to Bentivolio, who sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, he consulted attorneys. "These are lawyers, PhDs in history, I said; tell me how can I impeach the President of the United States."

The response, Bentivolio said, was that he needed evidence. While he didn't name any specific charges, the potential evidence he cited would be a theoretical email from the White House to the IRS specifically ordering the targeting of conservative groups for scrutiny in their tax exempt status application.

Despite ongoing Congressional scrutiny, no proof has yet emerged that the White House ordered any extra IRS scrutiny of conservative groups.

"Until we have evidence, you're going to become a laughing stock if you submitted a bill to impeach the president," Bentivolio said.

"And there are some people out there, no matter what Obama does; he's still the greatest president they have ever had. That's what you're fighting."

The idea of impeaching Obama has come up several times recently, including when Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold told his Texas constituents that the House of Representatives "could probably get the votes" to impeach Obama.

Unlike Bentivolio, Farenthold did not name any specific wrongdoing he would charge Obama with, although he did caution that a failed attempt at impeachment would do more harm than good.

As he closed out his remarks, Bentivolio said that the most corrupt institution in Washington was not the president but in fact the media, contrasted to Congress, whom he said were typically honest.

"Every congressman I've had, well at least on my side of the aisle, has been very straight and forward," Bentivolio said.

Ignorance is not an excuse for a lack of fact. Clinton WAS inpeached. Ignorance is killing us! Name calling solves nothing but to stir the pot. RECOGNIZE it for what it is! It matters not what party – The WhiteHouse is OURS – the American people! Are you actually letting your REP. and your Senator know how you feel? It is YOUR fault if congress fails to hear your concerns. Just Do It! The lobbying industry has taken priority over the American people. We are NOT getting PAID as Servants. We are paying them to serve us. How's that working out? They do not work even half of a year, and make over $100k with beautiful benefits (NO ObamaCare for them, Nor the IRS, or the staff!) oh! and the retirement plan- worth lying, stealing, cheating, killing for! Wake up people – Lady Liberty is on life support- and she needs YOU!

I am really getting annoyed with the tea party lies and deception to americans and some even believe it, this tea party/gop congress has the lowest rating in history and americans still stick with them, they have been proven that now ted cruz is from canada and his citizenship is ok, but ombana who has the same one is in doubt, this is pure racist and must stop, when you hear someone correct them, along with his policies have to be executive orders as the congress will not stop to make the bills better or even come up with a better idea, this is the people who must go as I live in a tea party headquarter state and retired from the military, Our worker, wages and even constitutional rights are gone from my state, we are now rated number 5 in all fifty states in corruption, money is being pocketed, we need federal audits to correct this, our federal government is our protector, especially for consumers and big business and our environment, this I learned from college, so why do we have so many ignorant Americans or blind, hard to say, some people with wealth can be so blind as to the average American, when the average Americans unite with one party and money is in the trillions, can make a difference, along with Americans voting to set laws for our reps in the houses, raises voted on bi-annually by all Americans, lobbying, yes, the reps receive 20%, the other 80% goes to our deficit and representatives retire after 15 year receive 60% benefits and after 20+ years receive 100%, but we must unite as the majority to achieve this and it includes all races and parties, it must stop and let our small businesses gain in every advantage with the protection of the federal government to protect them from big businesses to grow and and take away our tax dollars to protect banks and big businesses, we should restructure them to let small businesses and banks grow, along with incentives for small businesses not big ones or banks to allow for America job so simple, yet so corruipted

This kind of statement isn't politics, this is irrational, pathological hatred. Fraudulent voters are not a problem in this country, instead it is the 181,788 supposed "citizens" who voted for this horrible man.

I would say to Rep. Kerry Bentivolio that instead of spending your time looking for ways to impeach the President, why don't you spend that time working for the people of Michigan that elected you.

I wish they would impeach him. Bush should have been impeached also.
Also for everyone saying this is about race, then what the heck is your excuse for the same hate towards Bush and Clinton? It has nothing to do with race. Its about party. That is what is pathetic about this country. You fools sit here every 4-8 years flip flopping on hypocrisy. You are all being played as fools. Eventually one side is going to have to stop being hypocrites and call out their OWN party.

Obama is a tyrant. A Dictator. Every bit as much if not more than Bush. He is a disgrace. Id like to punch anyone in the mouth who dares call him a Liberal either. That fascist pos is anything but. Hes a Wall Street snake who has alot of Democrats fooled. Anyone still supporting him needs their heads examined.

Here is the reason the Republicans will soon find becomef a permanent minority party. If it weren't for gerrymandering most of these fools would not be in office today.

All that's stopping him from trying to impeach President Obama is evidence of wrongdoing ...

Folks, you do realize that if Bentivolio and the GOP had their way, there would never be a need for evidence to target anyone they didn't like.

THAT'S the "dream come true" he's really talking about ... and they say President Obama is "trampling" on the Constitution !

@Data Driven: "When your party has nothing left to offer, this is what remains."

Yep, and it plays with all the Americans the GOP has thrown under the bus: folks who've lost their jobs to outsourcing, are continually losing more and more of our nation's social safety net because of the GOP's insistence on coddling the wealthy and multinational corporations, folks who can handle they've been manipulated and lied to by the GOP over and over and over again.

THIS is why we need to get out in 2014 and send the GOP packing!

Need to look for the order to stop the tax exempt status for liberals that were connected to his election machine, (you won't find) he wanted all the monies in HIS election fund, not other liberal or conservative org's. that is where the smoking gun is.

Republicans have a problem with coming up with a credible alternative to what the Democrats propose as Newt Gingrich pointed out recently. They have wasted a lot of time trying to come up with a way to remove Obama instead of seeking to solve real problems that voters care about.

Really...all of our issues nationally and this guy spends time wondering how to impeach Obama? How about trying to help some of those people in Detroit or other parts of your home state? Better yet, pass the baton to someone who will work collaboratively with more moderate Republicans and Dems

Hey dummy, listen/read your own words . . . . . "Evidence of wrongdoing is about the only thing stopping Republican Rep. Kerry Bentivolio from attempting to impeach President Barack Obama, he told voters Monday."
I am sure the stink from your reindeer kept others from getting too close to you too. This guy is allowed to be near children?

When the GOP has something more than "theoretical" evidence of a "alleged" crime, then we will be willing to discuss impeachment. How about these radicals educate themselves as to the actual requirements for impeachment proceedings, instead of pandering to their uninformed base? Where is their intellectual honesty?

  21. The Real Tom Paine

Wow. He's being paid 175K a year, and the only " work" he's actually doing is consulting with people with JDs and PhDs on how to impeach the president. Oh well, I guess after being a Santa Claus impersonator, teacher and Reindeer Farmer, the perks of being a Congressman must seem like Nirvana, so why not play to loonies to keep milking that cash cow for all its worth? Iguess their new credo is " If you can't beat him, impeach him".

The evidence is there if you look.

What about all the laws he doesn't have enforced for starters Obama took an oath to up hold our laws not pick which law he wants to enforce.

The people that say we are racists are the biggest racists in the world bet you don't even know what a racist is.

Go back to drinking you Kool Aid your Government will keep giving you free stuff so you don't have to work.

We already have a few cities that have more people on handout form the Government than taxes coming if you don't have the money you shouldn't be allowed to spend it.

If we did that we would go to jail.

We will be the biggest third world Country that was free on earth.

Just for you stupid people out there before you call out names you don't know what they mean I am Black, voted Republican and damn proud of it.

  25. Wake up People!

Thank you CNN for picking up this story. I saw it on our local news yesterday morning. This guy and his supporters were and are pathetic. Is that why he was elected to Congress? To find dirt on President Obama? And the Tea Party wonders why people say they are racist? Amazing. I'm wondering, what are they going to do come January 2017?? Same as always. Nothing.
