Oklahoma gov.: Would be 'nice' if Obama spoke on 'thrill kill' murder

(CNN) – Oklahoma's Republican governor said Sunday it would be fitting for President Barack Obama to speak out on the murder of Christopher Lane, the Australian college student who was gunned down in a murder that police say was motivated only by boredom.

"I think it would be a nice gesture for him to do that, particularly since the country of Australia has expressed their sentiments as to the murder itself," Gov. Mary Fallin said on "Fox News Sunday," adding she herself was planning to telephone Lane's parents when time differences between the United States and Australia allowed.

Lane, a 23-year-old baseball player who was studying in the United States, was shot last week while out jogging in Duncan, Oklahoma. Three teens were subsequently charged in his death, and police said the only apparent motive for the young men was having nothing else to do.

Police in Duncan charged 15-year-old James Edwards Jr. and Chancey Luna, 16, as adults with first-degree felony murder, and Michael Jones, 17, with accessory charges.

The response among Australians to the muder was shock and, for some, sharp repudiation of American gun laws.

"It is another example of murder, mayhem on Main Street," Australian former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer told CNN's Piers Morgan last week. "People thinking of going to the U.S.A. on business or tourist trips should think carefully about it, given the statistical fact you are 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the U.S.A. than in Australia per capita, per million people."

But Fallin said the case didn't reflect problems with American laws.

"I don't think this issue is about gun control. It's an issue about murder," she said. "It's unfortunate that Australia feels that way. The United States has been a great friend to Australia. I certainly understand there are some raw feelings out there."

The case, for some, has triggered a debate with racial overtones. Parallels have been drawn to the Trayvon Martin case, in which an unarmed black teen was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer who claimed self-defense. The acquittal of George Zimmerman, who describes himself as Hispanic, infuriated many people and triggered protests around the country, as well as remarks from Obama.

The police affidavit in the Oklahoma killing lists Edwards and Chancey as black, and Jones as white.

Now, some Americans are asking why this killing, in which the victim was white and the alleged killers black, has not brought reaction from the president.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday he was not familiar with the case. When asked why the president had not weighed in on it, he noted that when Obama spoke of the Trayvon Martin case, he also spoke in general terms "about the impact of violence in communities all across the country."

CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

    Enough with the race debate! We need to find out how to help our youth of all races. My children have friends of every race and don't have a problem getting along. My house is kid central. Parents check here first when their kids are out. I wouldn't have it any other way. We need more activities for poor kids that parents can trust and afford.

    When asked why the president had not weighed in on it, he noted that when Obama spoke of the Trayvon Martin case, he also spoke in general terms.... "Trayvon could have been my son". That doesn't sound like general terms to me.

    Yeah, there was a murder heer in Phoenix last week too. How come the PRESIDENT hasn't spoken out about it?
    Come to think of it, there was a stray dog in my yard last week, why didn't the PRESIDENT speak out about it?
    I guess I'm just old enough to rmember when the PRESIDENT wasn't required by the opposition party to speak out on every single thing that happens anywhere....now watch this drive...

    It would be nice if the Republican governors shared what Freedom is, instead of suppressing it. The states want Obama to stay out of their business, but yet, they continue for him to get involved. They beg for Federal Government aid and money if they have a tornado, Republicans Governors cannot support their own states. Let's vote out their Governors who really know nothing about being a governor. This governor will not speak out how she is not providing for the minorities in her state. She is holding them back. This woman is not fit to be a leader, she is a suppressor of the people

    Governor what have you done for the blacks and minorities in education, jobs, health care, housing. What have you contributed to better them. What have you done to help create families to stay together. Governor, suppressing them is not helping them.

    There is a difference between the Trayvon Martin case and the Chris Lane case. Trayvon Martin looked suspicious to George Zimmerman because he was a black teenager wearing a hoodie. Chris Lane was killed in a random murder. One of the three teenagers charged in the crime is white.

    If the governor thinks that Obama should speak to Chris Lane's family, she should let him know. There is no need to get the media involved.

    While many here are making it into a race issue, many in Australia are denouncing our gun culture and blaming it.

    Keep on with the racial dog whistles GOPers. As sad and evil as this act is, it is a false equivalent to the Trayvon Martin killing. People are randomly murdered every day, but Trayvon Martin's life ended due to racial stereotyping and neglience of an individual who thought he was above the law. He was aquitted in the court of law, I guess that makes things even within the angry white crowd for OJ Simpson being aquitted in the court of law as well.

    Gov. Fallin (Failin') is waiting to call Lane's parents "when the time difference" allows? Talk about lame!

    It doesn't matter what President Obama does or does not do: All rethugs will criticize him.

    Why? Because they need to keep distracting their base from the FACT that rethugs have NOTHING to offer our country except failed policies, anger, hatred and division.

    It would also be 'nice' if Obama called out how the two blacks were getting tried for murder, while the driver (the white kid) WASNT.

    It would be 'nice' for FOX to even mention the black woman who "talked" a potential elementary school shooter out of killing her, the kids, cops or the kids.

    It would also be 'nice' of FOX to talk about the epidemic of gun violence America is known for.

    Im sure this victims mother knew the dangers her son was getting into when he came to "Amurkah"

    Which one of these two blacks could be Obama's son, or which one could have been him 35 years ago? Maybe he is comparing himself to the 2 black that killed the 88 year old white man? Where is Obama now when the news breaks that blacks are killing whites? AWOL. He can always use the excuse that CNN did not report either of these murders as being committed by blacks, but rather as "teenagers."

    Obama has nothing to gain from his political base by commenting on the incident. This would be front page news and Obama's son would look like the victim if only he were black. No race card to play to gather support for a minority vote, so why bother?

    Would be nice if the Oklahoma Governor would speak out about initiating laws in Oklahoma for stronger background checks when guns are purchased, and closing loop holes when buying guns at gun shows including internet gun shows. Would be nice – that would be stronger leadership by a State governor.

    So spokesman Josh Earnest was not familiar with the case? Are you kidding me? The former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia is on CNN saying he thinks people of Australia should think twice before coming to the United States because of this senseless murder, but the White House Spokesman says he is not familiar with the case? He must think the general public in the United States is pretty stupid to believe that one. Disgusting.

    Well, the President spoke on gun violence after the shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords and the killings at Newtown. The President spoke on the local authorities lack of investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin in Florida. Governor Fallin has rejected the notion that gun violence is an issue that needs federal review. Now, she is changing her tune when it metastasizes into her community. She is a hypocritical pile-on.

    It would be also be "nice" if you would respect the president instead of always trying to paint him as the racist you -yourself are. The president DOES NOT have to get involved in this case for the reasons listed below.

    1. The police will not just take the word of the black men and send them home;
    2. The dead white victim will not be judged as "not being where he belonged;
    3. The police did not throw the white victim in the morgue as John Doe without trying to get the facts first;
    4. The jury will be one of the white victims peers;
    5. The dead white victim will never be tried as a thug who didn't belong where he was;
    6. Justice will be served on the black men who murdered this white man; (they'll never see light again); and
    7. The black men will not be given their gun(s) back to murder other white men.

    No need for the president to say anything here. This Fallon woman and the other racists will make sure this crime doesn't go unpunished.

    What would you like the President to say governor failin?: "Oklahoma is so lame that kids have taken to picking off strangers out of boredom"? Maybe you should ask yourself why the teens in your state are so messed up.

    Amazing isn't it?? At the risk of appearing racist, Obama has refused to acknowledge any other cases other than where a black person was "perceived" to be the victim. But if a White or Hispanic, etc. is the victim ...not a word. Is he only the president of small portion of society? Or of us all?
    To the leftist....how is it that he can sit where he does? How is it that as a white that you would be his advocate, when you know he thinks lower of you because the color of your skin? How is it that Obama can even afford to be publicly seen with the likes of Al Sharpton, or Jessie Jackson who would promote violence – race against race, and citizen against citizen? Will you wait till it's reached a fevered pitch – until it's all out war, or denounce it now?

    Obama will not do that it was Black on White crime and where is Al and Jesse.

    Martin was a thug but that couldn't come out in court if you don't think so do a little work on you own like I did and you will find out the truth.

    Our liberal President and press kept showing a photo of a 14 year old instead of the 17 year old big difference.

    People need to get the facts before saying anything but our press and liberal buddies will not let that happen.
