Washington (CNN) - In June, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined four of her Supreme Court colleagues in overturning the federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
This weekend, she is poised to officiate at a same-sex wedding.
The couple is Michael Kaiser, president of Washington's Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and economist John Roberts. John Dow, vice president for communications at the Kennedy Center, told CNN the couple would be married on Saturday by Ginsburg.
Ginsburg’s role in the ceremony was first reported Friday by The Washington Post, which said she spoke about it in a recent interview.
“I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship,” the Post quoted her as saying.
The ceremony will take place in Washington, where same-sex marriage became legal in 2009. Thirteen states and the district allow same sex marriage; it is banned in 35 other states, and two do not have laws on the matter.
The Post reported Ginsburg said “it won’t be long before there will be another” same-sex marriage ceremony performed by a member of the high court, and that she will perform another in September.
@realitybites: "Ginsberg should be removed from the Supreme Court for a gross conflict of interest.
If she had performed gay marriages before the ruling, then you might have a point. She is performing a gay marriage in accordance with the law – nothing wrong with that.
I support gay rights but don't actually believe they 're equal. I challenge Obama, Biden, Ginsberg.... to legally appoint GAY Guardians for their children and grandchildren...I wonder if Obama's children will agree to that....NO Grandparent had ever truthfully said " I hope my grandchild is GAY"....
To all you posters who think God will "get" us now that a Supreme Court Justice will perform a gay marriage, where was God when the Holocaust was happening? After what Germany (and for that matter, Russia) did, why didn't God just use the omnipotence you say God possesses and just wipe those countries off the map?
Why is the Catholic Church still here? Think of all the lives destroyed by priests. Heck, for that matter, why are the Boy Scouts still around? Why didn't Sandusky just go up in a blaze of fire and a puff of smoke?
What about all those televangelists who've been shown to defraud their congregations for personal gain? How about GW Bush lying us into a war? How about every mass-murderer and serial killer out there – why didn't God just immediately dispatch them?
Just asking ...
To ThinkAgain – Maybe you should think for the first time and do a little research on God, satan and the whole religious thing.
ps God does not go where He is not wanted.
Ruth " baby" Ginsburg also likes to travel around the world making comments from above about our laws needing adjusted. She is not one of us and does not understand that our laws are to protect us from above, not changed by a socialist. Kenneth Krieger Cape Coral, Florida

God dispenses justice in accordance with his overall redemptive plan for mankind. Sometimes that judgement is rendered this side of Heaven and sometimes it will be fully pronounced at the Great White Throne Judgement on the Last Day. Ultimately, every sin will be judged. Nobody is getting away with any sins. Either Christ had paid the price of eternal punishment through one's faith in his redemptive work on the cross, or the person being judged will bear the full weight of justified eternal hell and punishment him/her self.
Most of the judges I know perform legal marriages regularly – there is no reason she shouldn't do the same. This is a legal governmental function (which bestows legal obligations) and not a religious one. The controversy is over – the Court has ruled.
overturning the federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman
ummm, no, that would be NATURAL law.
...Scalia to file dissenting opinion in the ceremony.
All the pseudo-Christians running around hating their bothers and sisters shall not find Jesus pleased with them come Judgment Day.
Symbolism matters. I am glad to see this.
@Jonz–thanks for clearing that up. Now that we've established God will be the judge, why don't you give it a rest and quit trying to do his job for him?
If you want to see conflict of interest on the Supreme Court, start looking into the actions of Alito and Thomas. Talk about conflict of interest! As to the moron who said grandparents don't want their grandchildren to be gay – did you ever think that's because of the behavior of society toward gay people rather than anything inherent in being gay? Also, any grandparents that feel that way should have their lineage wiped out anyway for the sake of humanity's betterment.
It would be really convenient if everyone stopped talking about this imaginary "God" character and started paying more attention to things of consequence.
Legalizing Marijuana is a Perfect Solution to CURE Gays and Lesbians Mental Disease.
The problem with Justice Ginsburg officiating a gay wedding, is this issue will come back to the Court to decide if any state can deny gay marriages. Then a case could be made that Ginsburg should recuse herself from the court, unless she knows she will retire before then.
Good for her. There is still a living brain in the Supreme Court.
I was ordained online, she will ease my backlog.
You WILL be judged by a higher power...You have been WARNED for these actions
To ThinkAgain – you ask 'where was God?' You'll find your answer at the cross. Look there first, and you'll find every answer to those questions. Theres a Man named Jesus there, who has answered and can answer your questions. And He answered it with the love and hope that you're seeking.
Jonz1– And you know all of that just how?? Have you been to the "Great White Throne"? Perhaps it is a mauve throne or a teal blue throne... or perhaps it is NO throne at all. If you haven't been there, how do you know?
And just why should a non-believer get "judged" by someone he doesn't believe in in the first place?
So many questions....
To rub it in, she is doing it on Sabbath!
Is she still Jewish??
Those anti-gays who claim that God wants to HURT loving, committed same gender American couples and deny us the SAME ability to protect and provide for our spouses are LYING. Jesus affirmed a gay couple. Read Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10. Many of us are familiar with the Gospel story where Jesus healed the servant of a Roman centurion. In the original Greek, the word that the Roman centurion uses in this passage to describe the sick man – pais – is the same word used in ancient Greek to refer to a same-gender partner.
good for ginsburg!
Congratulations to the lucky couple. What an honor to have a Supreme Court justice officiate your wedding. Justice Ginsburg is a true believer in equality. She should be applauded for that.
beechwood1: you point is sort of irrelevant because grandparents nor do parents control whether the child is gay. and im sure that someone ha appointed a gay guardian whether they knew it or not
