Mary Cheney says sister is 'dead wrong' on same-sex marriage

Updated 3:04 p.m. ET, 9/1

(CNN) - Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.

Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.

The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

- CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

One of the most hypocritical statements I always hear is " I don't hate gay people, God hates gay people". Well then why did he make so many of them???? Drop the hypocrisy it's personal bigotry and deal with it. Saying a couple of places in the Old Testament there are some vague references to gay acts being bad is a joke when the same book clearly states eating shellfish and pigs is wrong. Also meat on a Friday is a major sin as is working on the sabbath, FYI that's Friday night to Saturday afternoon NOT Sunday. People look for rationalizations for their own bigotry. Another important consideration, the Ten Commandments doesn't mention gays but it does mention bearing false witness and taking the Lords name in vain. For all the Bible thumping gay haters, ever lie or curse using the name of God or Jesus? You did WORSE than a gay sex act according to the the Bible!

    Dear Mary,

Hope you understand, but need to throw you, your spouse and your kids under the bus on this whole gay marriage thing – at least until the November 2014 election. This includes not inviting you to family gatherings or ever saying anything positive about relationships like "yours," because there's always the possibility of that awkward photo op or sound bite being picked up by the RWNJ media.

I would love to hear Liz Cheney explain how her sister's same sex marriage has destroyed her own marriage and their family's well being.

    @just saying

    "call it whatever you want"

    OK, we call it marriage

"but it is not a marriage"

You don't seem to understand how it works. Does reality frighten you? If the state calls it a marriage, it's a marriage.

Good for you Mary for speaking out... Her sister is dead wrong.. Never in our history have the rights of a minority been decided by the majority... If we vote on who can marry, then we should vote on who can have a child.. After all, those children cost everyone if the parents don't work...

How do they "have two children together"?? They may be raising them together, either after adopting them or after having them with someone else, be it a sperm donor in the lab or in the bed, but they certainly didn't "have them together".

So Liz and Daddy think the majority should be able to vote on the rights of a minority. How about we get to vote on what rights the two of you are allowed to have No more fishing for you Liz and Daddy, I think you should loose your guns. They are two dangerous for you to handle.

call it whatever you want mary, but it is not a marriage. the far left loons in this world can continue to try and redefined every word and institution, but those with common sense know what is real and what is leftist lunacy. this is what happens when the patients start running the asylum.

Stop. Take a look in the mirror. Take a look at the Republican Party. (you may now proceed to press the "Denial" button).

Liz Cheney needs to remember that she would not be able to run for office – nor vote, nor own property – if civil rights had been left to voters. Never in the history of this country have we left decisions about civil rights to the majority.

Let's recap: Liz Chaney believes discrimination is the American way. Liz Chaney doesn't have any understanding of the history of civil rights. Liz Chaney doesn't believe in equality or freedom. In other words, she is a typical Republican.

So not agreeing with your "life" style that means she is wrong? I wonder who is wrong in this debate? why we have to agree?

"Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators." No. The issue of marriage should be left up to the individuals who want to get married. Everybody elso should mind their own business and stop trying to impose their religious views on other people.

  22. Imagine that

@just saying – How does it feel to be on the wrong side of history? People used your exact words in the 1950s about interracial marriage. BTW, according to the LAW, it IS marriage. Get used to it. Welcome to the 21st century.

I am so tired of this issue that it isn't even funny. This issue has highlighted how Americans are JERKS regardless of background and political persuasion. The right has seen to it for years that gays can't even visit their significant other in the hospital or get the medical benefits they work for, and that everyone single or married works for and should have. The left however is bent or shoe horning these relationships into the marriage laws, which gays hope to redefine. What will probably happen though is that many people will end up unhappy from the case law that is produced and many gay will be unhappy having to play by straight rules. What can you do though, far be it from Americans to ever come together and work for the greater good.

Here's the arguments about gay marriage:
Liberal: You have to right to choose who you marry.
Conservative: Laws should be based on the Bible.

Hmmm, I wonder why Republican support has been dropping recently? Maybe an increase in intelligence?

I am glad that Liz Cheney is not my sister. Liz appears to be the creation of her father, Dick, regrettably. This means that she would sell out her own sister for Dick's–and her own–profiteering agenda. Did you ever notice that people like Dick and Liz Cheney can never, ever, have enough? Never enough control over others, never enough money, never enough status.

I feel deep compassion for Dick Cheney's children–he is such a greedy, megalomaniacal, ethically bankrupt individual. No child deserves that man for a father, IMO.
