McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

Hate to say it, but McCain's orbit is becoming more eccentric by the hour. Thank you for your service, Senator.

The excessive expansion of socialism will achieve for any country the same devastation that the Russian revolution brought to that great realm of culture and enlightenment.

This calls for a limited, 30 day strike against Russia'a key military installations. If we ignore him while he steals a ring, then what else can we ignore.

@Brad – it was not a gift, Putin asked to see the ring and then simply pocketed it and walked away. He had several huge bodyguards with him and there was nothing Kraft could do. He was told to say it was a gift to save US face but that wasn't true. He's never going to see that ring again – obviously Putin isn't going to give it back – but at least the record's clear that it was stolen from him.

Putin is a low down thief. I really like this by McCain. And I wish you people who do not care have something really valuable stolen from you. You people have no morals. Just let it go. He is the president of Russia and a petty thief. And you people are just like him if you do not care.

McCain is trying to relive his younger days. He lives in the past. His mind is back in the Cold War but if it was up to him he would ignite the Cold War again and start W.W. III. When I see him being interviewed I either turn off the sound or change the channel. Man is pathetic. Take a hint McCain and go away!

What a narrow escape we had. Imagine if this silly man was president. We'd be invading Candy Land by now on some senile whim.
