(CNN) - Responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin's controversial opinion piece in the New York Times, Sen. John McCain jokingly told CNN's Jake Tapper he'd like to write a commentary for Pravda, the historic Russian newspaper connected to the Communist Party.
Well, now it looks like McCain may get his wish.
According to Foreign Policy's blog The Cable, the editors of Pravda have tentatively agreed to publish an op-ed by the Arizona Republican. The opinion piece will most likely reflect McCain's strong negative views toward Putin.
"We have to remember who Putin is. He's a KGB colonel apparatchik, who has never abandoned the Russian ambitions for an empire, and influence in the world," McCain said Thursday on Tapper's show, "The Lead."
Dmitry Sudakov, the English editor of Pravda, told The Cable that if McCain wants to write an op-ed, he is "welcome."
"Mr. McCain has been an active anti-Russian politician for many years already," Sudakov continued. "We have been critical of his stance on Russia and international politics in our materials, but we would be only pleased to publish a story penned by such a prominent politician as John McCain."
A spokesman for McCain told The Cable that McCain "would be glad to write something for Pravda, so we'll be reaching out to Dmitry with a submission."
Mr McCain describes Putin as someone "who has never abandoned the Russian ambitions for an empire, and influence in the world". McCain or his beloved country never had those ambitions. Right? Hypocrisy or ?
We have one President who's job it is to reply to world leaders. McCain is not the President he must step aside. The way he has acted through this entire issue having him respond to Putin could start another war in itself. It seems he is not happy unless we have multiple wars at once, he wanted war in Libya, Egypt, continued presence in Iraq and Afghanistan and no telling where else. The old saying that old warriors should stop war has been lost on Sen. McCain the senator from the Keating Five and the savings and loan bailouts!!!
It's time for John McCain to retire. It's great that he was a war hero but how long can someone really ride that? Sorry but it is not that big of a deal. Right now McCain is just embarrassing himself while Putin is running circles around him. Frankly, putin is very shrewd, cunning and highly intelligent. Those are traits that even his worst critics and enemies would have to admit. What does McCain have? Early onset senility? Just give it a rest McCain, 80% of the U.S. population doesn't want to get into yet another war, even if it only involves guided munitions such as cruise missiles.
The thing is, wars are sinkholes. Maybe initially the plan is to limit our involvement but just like fire, it tends to grow bigger when you feed it more fuel. Eventually we will find ourselves fully engaged in the conflict without even realizing it. It's not as if this hasn't happened before and McCain of all people should know better since his "heroism" occurred during that very conflict. Now if these war hungry folks really want to fight that badly then I say let us draft them to serve in the conflict. Give them the chance to put the money where their mouth is.
If anyone were to write a rebuttal to Putin's op-ed piece it should be Obama, but what is there to rebut? McCain had no clue that his running mate for the highest office in the country was a complete moron but now he claims to know Putin's innermost thoughts and desires? I'm really tired of hearing McCain's verbal diarrhea.
There are times for throwing insults back and forth via newspaper articles, and this is not it.
God help us. Take this man from our midst. He is terribly misinformed and not a representative of our country. His dementia is an embarrasent to our country.
If McCain opens his mouth I hope Mr. Putin understands that McCain does NOT represent or speak for the American people as a whole... he speaks only for himself.. I hope and pray McCain exercises some self-control and keeps his mouth shut and opinions to himself. All he will do is stir up more controversy and we don't need that. All he seems to want to do is start more conflict.. I thank God he was not elected as President.
Good luck McCain. You may not have noticed that Mr. Putin and Mr. Obama just brokered a peaceful solution to Syria's WMD issue- that may now go even further. Complain about that? Really?
He should let Granny Sarah Grizzly write it for him.
or better yet, ask sarah palin to pen it. she can see russia from her front porch, after all...
Just what we need-the angry old fart bellowing for war. Again.
John McCain is a very clever man! He is the only one of the whole bunch, who has foresight for the future!
Don't forget people, the Russians still have hundreds or thousands of US citizens in their gulags and prisons. many for crimes they didn't commit. Bring our people home! Putin, let our people go!!!
Dear Americans, I'm reading pages of comments here and I see the only reason left for America to be exceptional is that it's just the biggest democratic country in the world, no other reason. You're little kids in Putin's arms. If you continue like this he might become your president too, he'd love to make you happy. GASPROM forever!!!
if it was not for his father and grandfather the only thing mccain would have been allowed to fly in the navy is a kite.why his his military files lock up
Mr President we cannot have an op-ed gap!
McCain shouldn't talk about anyone..The washed up old man from Arizona who ran as a war hero when it was so far from the truth and now he has words about Putin, better let that one alone McCain because that egomainiac Putin from Russia wrestled bears for kicks and might do the same to you!
Putin is shrewd, cunning and highly intelligent unlike our current commander and chief, the community organizer.American exceptionalism is real and has held the world together since World War Two ended in1945.Putin is taking advantage of a weak US president who lacks the ability to make a decision of any weight. What this country needs, whether a Replubican or Democrat is a leader who is strong and can bring both parties together.Unfortunately we will continue on our current path until that person is in office.Peace through strength.
CNN: consider blocking comments from non-USA IP addresses. It's clear that many people posting on your site are foreigners with their own decidedly anti-American agendas. It's not that they don't deserve freedom of speech (if they even have it where they live), but they shouldn't be allowed to influence our national conversation. They're not at all concerned with what's best for this country, if only under sarcastic pretext.
I can't believe this article is still in rotation. The fact that CNN published this distraction from the real conversation about Syria is equivalent to journalistic malpractice. cover the key players please; Kerry and Obama, and Putin as for that matter now that he has taken lead on this matter.
McStain needs to just be quiet. How about fixing the budget issues instead of worrying about what is going o. In Syria.
