(CNN) - Responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin's controversial opinion piece in the New York Times, Sen. John McCain jokingly told CNN's Jake Tapper he'd like to write a commentary for Pravda, the historic Russian newspaper connected to the Communist Party.
Well, now it looks like McCain may get his wish.
According to Foreign Policy's blog The Cable, the editors of Pravda have tentatively agreed to publish an op-ed by the Arizona Republican. The opinion piece will most likely reflect McCain's strong negative views toward Putin.
"We have to remember who Putin is. He's a KGB colonel apparatchik, who has never abandoned the Russian ambitions for an empire, and influence in the world," McCain said Thursday on Tapper's show, "The Lead."
Dmitry Sudakov, the English editor of Pravda, told The Cable that if McCain wants to write an op-ed, he is "welcome."
"Mr. McCain has been an active anti-Russian politician for many years already," Sudakov continued. "We have been critical of his stance on Russia and international politics in our materials, but we would be only pleased to publish a story penned by such a prominent politician as John McCain."
A spokesman for McCain told The Cable that McCain "would be glad to write something for Pravda, so we'll be reaching out to Dmitry with a submission."
McCain: ancient chronologically, but behaving like a scolded teenager. This guy just needs to hang it up and let the dementia run its course.
McCain will probably make us look like a nation of fools, I agree with the comment above that we should write a disclaimer to Pravda from the American People so they know McCain only speaks for himself and defense contractors.
I've lived in Arizona for 33 yrs, John McCain is an embarrassment. His judgement is poor. Look at who he picked for a vice presidential running mate.
Hey...if Putin get's us out of the tough spot we're in with Syria....we should let him say anything he wants to say about us...and make sure its published on the front page of every newspaper in the USA
This war criminal should have never made it out of the jungle bamboo cage thet he was held in let alone preaching to the World about politics and morality.
Sen. Insane will you please focus your attention on Americans?
So ends pax americana...
Terrific. McCain wants to step in and f up ongoing negotiations. He is dying to go to war.
Senator McCain, an American hero, is now merely an embarrassment. He REALLY needs to be put out to pasture.
I cannot believe this guy. I thought respected leaders find the moment when it is time to go and let new leadership deal with the issues of the nation. This man is passe and his ideas and motives are totally suspect. Guess he is simply a poor looser.
Russia already knows that McCain does not represent the American people. They saw what we were willing to accept in order to keep him out of the oval office.
McCain wants to respond. How about leading? Cuz whining is Un-American.
This is serious penis envy. That is the way we solve problems...Syria uses their biggest penis to beat on the rebels, We threaten Syria with our bigger penis then Russia who arguably has as big a penis as we do settles the whole thing and we are left holding ours, so to speak. Syria is serious testosterone poisoning. It is males trying to beat the heck out of males and at the heart of the issue are male dominated religions built around a male deity.
We are so out of balance as a planet.
It sure hurts not being president huh McCain
Wow, it's amazing there are so many knuckleheads on here sympathetic to Putin. Putin is no hero, he is a thug and a dictator of a pseudo-democratic country that has no moral standing to be critical of the United States. He was only brought to the table on Syria because of the threat of force by the Obama administration. Clearly, Obama has been reluctant to get the U.S, involved in conflict and no one commenting here knows the calculus of the Obama administration on this issue. In the past, if a President was inclined to swat a country with a missile or air strike, he would just order it and THEN go on TV and address it–he would not stall by asking "permission" from the Congress. Reagan didn't "ask permission" to bomb Libya–he just ordered the strike. This whole thing could have been planned and so after two years of Russia obstructing action via the UN on Syria, he is now on the hook to deliver, via the UN, or else suffer humiliation.
What McCain is going to say that would make some sense anyway? I am a conservative and I say – time for him to shut up & go. Maybe hire someone to write memoir.
John, go ahead, make my day! Just don't forget to check readers comments on your op-ed in Pravda, you will find out that the world is bigger than you thunk.
McCain is Putin's puppet. I mean poodle.
McCain needs to shut up and sit down. He's a sad, angry old man who should be put out to pasture. He's a caricature of an older American man and doesn't represent who we are as a country.
The US is not exactly guilt free when it comes to empire and controlling the world.
I think this is another part of Putin's strategy of stamping out US world political dominance. It's brilliant allowing an inconsistent and hypocritical McCain to op-ed, because they know as we do that he is only going to make us look more weak and foolish. Op-ed for op-ed, or playing right into their hands?
Time to retire McCain. You have completely lost credibility.
Please old man, nobody cares about your childish comeback to Putin. Silence is the best reaction, instead of looking like a foolish schoolboy. Plus Putin has a point, be it hypocritical when he doesn't believe in equal rights in his own country. No one should feel like they are better "exceptional" than any other person. Its kind of an old communist view which actually is not a bad view, it just doesn't work on large scales, unless you bend the original rules like china. Hey, everybody read Putin's complete op-ed article before getting all defensive, its not that bad or offensive. McCain you would be better off just sitting your old butt down and getting back to your bored self, and just challenge Putin to a game of online poker via your phone, you obviously have not been paying attention anyway. Hey maybe you could win some of your dignity back!? What happened to your humility dude? Get over it
You tell him John, give it to him.
It is so disappointing that McCain is unhappy with an actual diplomatic solution in Syria. But, not to worry about him writing the letter–the man cannot use a computer and has a paralyzed writing hand.
