(CNN) - President Barack Obama said Monday that "several people have been shot and some have been killed" at the Washington Navy Yard in what he called a "cowardly" act that "targeted military and civilian personnel."
Obama said America "is confronting another mass shooting" and he called for a thorough and "seamless" investigation involving federal agencies and the military.
Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, spoke about the shooting from Charleston, South Carolina, where he's made a scheduled stop to talk about infrastructure and jobs.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the military and civilian personnel at the Washington Navy Yard," he said.
He received a briefing from the National Security Council on Air Force Two before he arrived in Charleston.
"This situation is unfolding and we know a tragedy has occurred and we are thinking about all the people who are there and praying for the safety of all the military and police personnel who are trying to bring this under control as well," he said.
Usa needs total gun-ban laws. Constitution makers were bribed to set in idiocy.
Usa needs total gun-ban laws are needed. Desperately.
if they were yelling allah akbar and yelling die infidel, obama will still call it work place violence.

??? They didn't have to shout or yell anything, and it would still be work place violence.
Obama promised to reduce terrorist threats by not being like the "cowboy" W. However his bombing of villages in Pakistan and general military attitude has kept the threats coming. Ok so he is a smiling well-spoken cowboy. What was the Change again?
"if they were yelling allah akbar.................obama will still call it work place violence"
And the NRA would say "the man was just using his second amendment rights".
My prayers go out to all of the victims and their families.
Neither a "total ban on guns" or "guns for everyone" is going to stop a focused crazy person or terrorist. So would the tin foil hat representatives from the extremes please return to your corners.

If those people that were gunned down had been able to fire back and defend themselves, they might be alive and the death toll lower. People that plan these attacks target the weakest spot. Why do you think they don't atack the police stations?
Are the Republicans insisting that he call this "terrorism" yet?
Of course Mr Obama and his out of touch compadres in the White House would twist this into another bullet in their gun control assault on our rights. Once again he should look at the root cause of the attack, not the method. While we do not have facts yet, the reality is that attacks on US military facilities are historically attacks aimed at the US Government of which he is the currently the head. That being the case this attack is, historically speaking, most likely a result of his policies, a hatred of those policies and the government he is running. This is not some random target like a school. This is a US Government facility, an extension of his government.
Why don't we allow our Military patriots (as Obama called them) carry their weapons on base? We don't trust them? They risk their lives for our freedom! The laws enacted under Clinton banning this are stupid and dangerous. We should get rid of such idiocy completely.
Enact a total gun ban and only criminals and cops will have them. Sounds like a brilliant idea! Riiiight.....
"Gun Free Zones" should be renamed to "Free Kill Zones". Intentional Soft Targets – Also brilliant!
How many times must this happen before we wise up? Common sense would say that Gun Free Zones need to go.
@Tommy G "had been able to fire back and defend themselves"
Guns accidents are much more likely than defense. Maybe in all the confusion more people would have been hurt shooting each other – just as likely as "defend themselves". Gun restrictions will not stop crazy people or terrorists, but neither does a bunch of armed people make them into a Hollywood vision of the invincible defenders.

Right. So, instead of attacking a police station, they go and attack a naval yard. Got it. Wrong. People are not as stupid as your ridiculous remark suggests. People will arm themselves sufficiently to attack their selected target. If someone wanted to attack a police station, then they would gather sufficient firepower to do it. But, what's the point in attacking a police station.
Besides, if people had started shooting back, then you would have had a circular firing squad because no one will be able to tell the "good guys" from the "gad guys." The list of casualites and deaths would most likely have been significantly higher. Putting more guns into the hands of people simply means more guns being fired, which leads to more gun deaths and injuries.
Here we go again with another mass shooting. This guy was armed to the teeth with an assault rifle, shotgun and handgun. When will the madness end? When two state senators get recalled by the 13% of their district, & those same districts voted overwhelmingly for them, I guess democracy has gone out of the window. Wake up people!
They ought to change from the elephant to the hippo...

obama doesn't call anything terrorism. to him that does not exist. ft. hood? work place violence. benghazi? a criminal act being investiagted by the fbi, yeah right. three weeks to get to the scene, one year later nobody arrested. aq controls the area. obama is a joke when it comes to terrorism. we say that play out with the syria fiasco.

Except there are extremely few people attempting to make any argument that we should "ban all guns." The NRA and gun nuts try to paint that as the only alternative that's being presented so that people will tune out anyone arguing for better gun control, background checks and registrations. It's why the NRA goes to desperate lengths to sell faulty logic and incoherent rationalizations that things like moderately more stringent background checks and a simple registration system EQUATE with an attempt to totally ban guns, even though they don't. They KNOW they are pushing an outrageously extremist position with their wild-west "more guns is the solution to gun violence" garbage, so they have to spin and fabricate a false equivalence...a claim that the other side is somehow the "real" extremists. That you latch onto that straw man is a sad commentary on how effective such lies are.
"Why do you think they don't atack the police stations?"
But they do. Go use your Googlez like a good boy.
Condolences to the families involved, and we really need to have some serious gun laws in this country.
But what's with the headline size that takes up half the screen? WE KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS IN IRAQ, AND I *NEVER* SAW TYPE THAT BIG FOR ANY OF THEM.
What a sick, belly-gazing, self-absorbed country this is.
Thanks NRA!
If the goptp call this a terrorist act then they should take the blame for helping terrorist get guns easily no background checks.

You lack actual facts. The Assault Weapon Ban enacted under Pres. Clinton expired in 2004.
