Senate recesses for the day in wake of Navy Yard shooting

Updated 9/16/2013 at 3:18pm

(CNN) - The Senate is recessing until Tuesday morning because of the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday. He said votes scheduled for Monday evening will be rescheduled. The Senate also went into a two-hour lockdown starting around 3 p.m., with no one allowed in or out of the complex, according to the Senate sergeant at arms. More information is expected at 5 p.m.

Hm. Sounds like another excuse to not be in the Capitol.

If Congresscritters ever worked, I wouldn't say something like that. But at some point, these people need to stop finding reasons to scatter back to their leased Georgetown residences or back to their districts.

I read that they're taking another 3-week vacation soon.

Dont want to sound inconsiderate but didn't congress just come back from vacation? moments like these for congress are like when the fire alarm goes in school and you get to miss a few minutes of class

Why do they have to stop working? What can they do to help?

Deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.

Our prayers are with law enforcement as they try to find the other suspect(s).

Everybody else should keep their mouth shut until we really find out what has happened.

Why shouldn't they dismiss for the day? Why should they stay congregated together in one general area when one or more gunmen are reportedly still on the loose? Where are the gunmen headed next? Are they going into hiding, or on to another attack? I hope he House dismisses, too. I really don't want to see someone attempt the NRA's "good guy with a gun" advice.

Why don't they call their friends at the NRA to come and protect them and stay around and get some work done for a change?
I live in the DC metro area and I'm just fed up.... you can fill in the blank.

I dunno, maybe passing a gun control bill or three might have been appropriate.

When was the last time you actually saw a GOP member of the Senate or House actually do the job they were hired to do? Do they even know what hard work means anymore?

My sympathies to those that have lost their lives in yet ANOTHER tragedy, and to the police officers that have to respond to these types of emergency calls amongst others.

I think that the commander in chief should appoint who he/she need to have in congress and the senate they should not be elected because we have too many uneducated voters in this country that will not fire some of their Reps, the president should have the power to fire these thugs.

First of all our sympathies to all victims, their families and those workers who have had probably the worst day of their lives and I don't want to sound insensitive, my husband works about a mile or so from the Navy Yard and twelve innocent workers are dead, but congress recessing from what? I thought they were on lock down still.
Just heard that the shooter, according to a neighbor, was cleaning his gun at home and he accidentally fired into her apartment above him. Authorities were called and they did nothing!
Any word from the NRA and that slobbering fool lapierre?

They need to carry there butts back to work. It's not like they're trying to stop anything like this from happening again. You know, like meaningful gun reform. Get back to work and stop mooching off of my tax dollars!!!

    Silence DoGood
Neither a "total ban on guns" or "guns for everyone" is going to stop a focused crazy person or terrorist. So would the tin foil hat representatives from the extremes please return to your corners.

If those people that were gunned down had been able to fire back and defend themselves, they might be alive and the death toll lower. People that plan these attacks target the weakest spot. Why do you think they don't atack the police stations?
Tell that to cops in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the police and their installations are routinely targeted. People will arm themselves to do the job. Also, people who are not trained to deal with this situation are likely to do far more harm than good.Is it a good thing that innocent bystanders get killed by self-appointed security guards, or can we chalk that up to collateral damage?

Were the senators and their staff secured in the capitol or in their offices? That would have been appropriate if there was some reasonable threat to them. If they could teleconference from their offices to the floor of the Senate or committees during times like this, that could keep the Senate moving to some degree.

    @ PD Sniffit
"Why do you think they don't atack the police stations?"

But they do. Go use your Googlez like a good boy.

I used the Googlez like you said and I found on a website specifically for Police that there were less than 5 in 2013 and they were either with a gun or a situation where the person was looking for suicide by police. You are impressive, PD Sniffit. You will say anything to try and prove your point and usually you'll just make stuff up.

By the way, I'm still really worried about this deal with Russia with regards to Syria. I mean, since Putin doesn't respect Obama strictly because of the color of his skin, how can we trust that he will carry out the agreement? Either Obama is crazy to trust a racist like Putin, or he is totally naive, or both. Which one is it, PD Sniffit? How can the pres work out a deal with an obvious racist like Putin?

The only hard work coming from congress is trying to repeal the aca, and that's certainly not what were paying them for

To show how blinded by partisanship people are here, they are chastising repubs for leaving early due to the shooting when it's the democrats who run the senate. Classic.

Come on, Tommy Paine and DMFO, you're better than that!! 🙂

@just saying, your tea tards, and some dinos, voted against gun control while the parents of the Newton victims stood by. If anyone should be blamed for letting these kinds of weapons be sold like candy again is YOUR turd #43.
How about some respect for the victims and the responders? Never mind, your fat radio boy is probably having a good day today.
