Peter King: Ted Cruz 'is a fraud'

Washington (CNN) - The government shutdown showdown is getting ugly.

Republican Rep. Peter King said Friday that his Republican colleague in the Senate, Ted Cruz, "is a fraud" who will "no longer have any influence in the Republican Party" after the House votes on a measure that could potentially lead to a government shutdown.

King made his comments while on his way to a Republican meeting, shortly before the House was set to begin debating, then voting on the bill. The legislation provides funds for the government to stay afloat past the end of the fiscal year on September 30, but only if money for Obamacare is cut out.

Ted Cruz: Obamacare fight 'just beginning'

The idea to tie the president's health care law to the government funding bill was aggressively pushed by Cruz and other Senate conservatives, including Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Mike Lee, this summer.

The House is expected to pass the bill, which will then go to the Democratic-controlled Senate where the Obamacare amendment will likely be killed. The bill would then be sent back to the House, which would have to decide whether to pass it and keep the government running, or defeat it and possibly see a government shutdown.

King, who's been strongly opposed to the bill, has essentially compared the strategy to a suicide mission.

"I hope people will get the message this guy is bad for the party," King said Friday, talking about Cruz, a potential 2016 presidential candidate. King is also a potential White House contender, as he has said he's thinking about running for president.

Asked if the House vote was more of a message to conservatives than to Obama, King said the vote is a signal that the GOP has "to take more realistic and practical approaches."

The congressman has said before that he can start ignoring the senator from Texas after the vote. He reiterated Friday he hopes that's still the case.

"We can't be going off on these false missions that Ted Cruz wants us to go on. The issues are too important. They're too serious, they require real conservative solutions, not cheap headline-hunting schemes," he said.

Cruz angered House conservatives earlier this week when he admitted in a statement that he doubts the Senate has enough votes to pass a government funding measure that also defunds Obamacare. He has nonetheless vowed to keep fighting in the Senate to generate support for the measure.

But with some Senate Republicans already saying they won't support Cruz in the effort, the chances of him succeeding so far appear unlikely.

Mike said, "There is no truth to the promise of $2500/year healthcare cost savings under Obamacare. My healthcare costs are up 50% as a direct result of this law."
Common sense should tell you that it's your current insurance company's GREED that's increasing your premiums, the ACA won't start enrolling until October 1st and plans start January 1st! In New York (ACA already implemented) residents are seeing lower premiums, rebates, better care, and so much more. Under the ACA insurance companies will have to spend 80% of what you pay, on YOU!

If you're a Tea Partier, you're days are numbered. The only people who respect you guys are yourselves. If even a right-wing right winger like Peter King calls your darlings like Ted Cruz a fraud, it means you have no valid position at all. Tick, tock, tick, tock. What's even better is knowing that in 5-10 years 100% of all the people that currently support the Tea Party will be deceased (because they are geriatric).

  5. There They Go Again

It has now become blatantly obvious that the Congressional Republicans are only interested in tearing down a president and letting everyone know that they did so, rather than actually rolling up their sleeves and working towards a viable solution to this impending funding crisis as they are charged with doing. But American voters are paying very close attention to what these Conservatives like Cruz, who incidentally had no business being elected to such a high post. Texas people: Are you DAFT or something? Just look at how this man has turned out to be so early in the game! But it will ultimately cost you, the citizenry, if the Republicans continue to play politics and hold the funding of much needed services hostage! Remember That When You Are At The Polls in 2014 and Especially In 2016!

I'm tired of the games being played in DC. What's happening is a power play by the members of congress that are angry because they don't have control of the house and the presidency. The far right obstructionists are no better than the left liberals. The republicans stated their only plan was to destroy President Obama. WHY?
They have refused to pass any legislation that would have created jobs therefore bring in more taxes, reduce the cost of unemployment insurance and the cost of food stamps, (which they are trying to take away from millions of Americans, many of those are children). Now the all Americans are being held hostage by uncompromising zealots. Give us the 'good ol days of Tip O'Neal and Ron Reagan'. The tea party is trying to hijack the government with they're extreme ideology. The only thing they are doing is hurting all American citizens. Now they want to take away the chance for low income families to have affordable health care. How will defunding Affordable Care bring down health care costs when uninsured wait to go to a doctor until they are so ill they go to an expensive ER which they can't pay for therefore hospitals have absorb those costs so the cost for care increases which means insurance premiums must rise and so forth and eventually the taxpayers get stuck with the cost. With or without affordable care taxpayers are stuck paying the bill. It's a proven fact that preventive care reduces costs. Also, who pays for the uninsured in horrendous accidents or catastrophic illnesses. AH HA! Guess who?? The working taxpayer!! How is that a better way? Answer me that!!

I for one would love to see the government shut down, and I will remember it was the Republicans who caused it, and I think it is about time they got their balls together. Cut the government in half, and stop funding welfare around the world, including here in the US.

Incorrect info, if the Senate strips the Obamacare portion out, it does Not go back to the House,it goes to a reconciliation committee where neither the House nor the Senate will agree, which will then mean the Senate shut down the government because they will have failed to pass the bill.

Now that there is no Republican Party, Ted Cruz and the Tea Party are going to FREE America from it's Creditworthiness when the country defaults. The Freshman senator will have accomplished singlehandedly in his short tenure something never achieved in the entire history of the United States. What a true Patriot Ted Cruz is - of Castro's Cuba!! Castro has sent the U.S. a gift for the more than 50 years of economic embargo - Pastor Cruz and his brainwashed son Rafael who was trained since birth to carry out this plot !!

  17. Como Que No

The Elites that run the GOP are championing Cruz and Rubio to try to pull the Latino vote away from the Dems in time for 2016. Cruz and Rubio are now simply puppets.

The Dems in California are countering the GOP by passing laws to give illegal aliens the equivalent of drivers licenses.

I'm an Independent and a moderate. We Americans must reject both the Right and Left wingers or else they'll continue to polarize our country and tear it into two pieces.

Ted Cruz should not have revoked his Canadian Citizenship, He should have run for office in the Country in which he was born, Calgary Canada. He is a showboat and He is not a Texan nor is he a natural born citizen of the US.

Cuban Mole has infiltrated the Tea Party. Freshman senator Ted Cruz is about accomplish singlehandedly what has never happened in the entire history of the United States - He is going to FREE America of its Creditworthiness by causing a government shutdown and subsequent default. Why? After 50 years of an economic embargo, Castro sent the U.S. a gift – Pastor Cruz and his brainwashed son Rafael who has been trained since birth to carry out the Plot – the economic default of the United States. Real Republicans need to arrest the members of the Tea Party! They are here in our midst!

Joe, when the Senate passes a bill without the defunding provision, the Senate is the last one to pass a bill to keep the government running. The House, when it rejects a reconciliation, is the one who will cause a shutdown.
