Less than one in five Americans say their families will be better off under the new health care law, according to a new poll.
But a CNN/ORC International survey released Tuesday morning also indicates a majority say the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, will help some people, with 37% saying the law, which is gradually starting to kick in, won't help anyone.
According to the poll, four in 10 say the new law will make their families worse off, while 41% believe it will have no effect.
Seventeen percent think the measure will be a good thing for themselves or their families.
The poll's release comes on the same day as a key element of the health care law takes effect, as Americans without insurance can begin enrolling in state insurance exchanges.
And it comes hours after the shutdown of the federal government courtesy of a bitter partisan battle over the new health care law.
According to the poll, 36% say they won't benefit from the new law but other families will. If you add to that the 17% who believe Obamacare will help them personally, the survey indicates that most Americans see some good coming from it. Some 37% say no one in the country will benefit from the measure.
As the exchanges open for business, 52% say the health insurance system created by Obamacare is a disaster waiting to happen, with 45% saying the system will eventually work.
The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International September 27-29, with 803 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
With most components of the health care law not taking effect until 2014, many Americans still don't have a full grasp of Obamacare, and a couple of surveys from other organizations conducted in September indicated that only a minority said they knew a lot about the law.

CNN is deliberately misconstruing the numbers to make it sound like most Americans think the ACA will have a positive effect on America. They are trying to add the 37% of Americans that think the ACA will help some people with the 17% who think it will help them personally to equal a majority of Americans thinking the ACA will have a positive effect. What it really says is 17% of people will be helped and 83% will be negatively impacted. If they want a real poll, all CNN has to do is read the review section and they will see that 90% of the population is against the ACA. Let’s try promoting personal responsibility and self reliance so that people can succeed and have the means of helping the truly unfortunate instead of trying to hold everyone’s hand and bringing down the middle class in the process.
Go Obama. Great job. Thank you for helping everyone. Not just the rich.@
It looks like those of you whose premiums rose are not working your policies through the subsidy calculator. A good majority of people will be eligible for subsidies and or tax credits. Everyone needs to get more educated before posting. Additionally, plans are not apples to apples. The ACA plan includes a minimum coverage that does not exist with many individual plans..many.
Obama care will put my family in the hole, basically we can't even afford it so I guess all of us will go to jail. I f we can't even afford this dictatorship healthcare, how can we afford to pay the penalty?
I'm truly disappointed with President Obama I thought I was changing history & making the right decisions I realize being President you can't make everyone happy I get it but shutting the government down is stupid stop acting like 2year olds and grow up! I'm not dem or rep I thought I picked the right President but I think now I was wrong sorry Obama you just lost my support now I have to pay triple my rates and triple on my copays really oh let's not forget going to college ha ha I can't afford it now the rates are too high Thanks Obama!
All these nightmarish stories of how the Obamacare rates are not "affordable" and the people who are insured have seen rates double/triple... If/when Ovamacare folds, rates will not return to "normal". Thanks to Obamacare, they will remain as high as they are as the new price rate has been set,
Just wait until all the little exemptions and loopholes come creeping out of the 20,000 page monstrosity.
My husband and I both work very hard, yet we don't even make enough to qualify for low income insurance. If Obamacare was put in place to help the poor, it is doing a piss poor job of doing it! It is the poor that barely make ends meat that will be most effected by this. How are we suppose to be able to afford this insurance? Get a second on third job? Come on wake up!
read the fine line..... bronze member have 5000 deductible a year hahahaha
