(CNN) - Compared to other U.S. government agencies, the State Department has been relatively lucky.
Because many of its accounts are appropriated more than a year at a time, there is money in most to keep almost all employees at work and all offices and overseas posts open for the near future.
But it isn't business as usual.

Remember this nugget from October 2012?
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) acknowledged that House Republicans had consciously voted to reduce the funds allocated to the State Department for embassy security since winning the majority in 2010.
On Wednesday morning, Chaffetz was asked by CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien if he had "voted to cut the funding for embassy security."
"Absolutely," Chaffetz said. "Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country. We have…15,000 contractors in Iraq. We have more than 6,000 contractors, a private army there, for President Obama, in Baghdad. And we’re talking about can we get two dozen or so people into Libya to help protect our forces. When you’re in tough economic times, you have to make difficult choices. You have to prioritize things.”
Looks like the House repubs are angling for another attack on our embassies ... just saying ....
Sounds like those GOP Congressman and Bachmann should be charged with RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT.
The taxpayers should sue them for any increased borrowing costs that ThEY [the GOP / TP] caused by the 2011 US credit downgrade that resulted from their debt ceiling grandstanding. Let's do the same as they take us to the brink of default this year. These are REAL costs; why shouldn't we hit them in the wallet? Why shouldn't thwey pay a price?
Don't worry , Ted Cruz will be there like Mighty Mouse to save the day .
I'm sure Sarah Palin " Moose Mama " will be right by his side.
Uh Oh... Republicans are digging deeper, and deeper, and deeper. Let an attack happen at one of our mid-east embassies and the Republican Party goes extinct.
Republican positions:
Affordable Health Care for Americans? No.
Guns for all? Yes.
Funding the Government? No.
Lower the Credit Rating? Yes.
The GOP teaparty won't care Banghazi happend because the GOP cut the security budget by at least 100 million dallars and then try and blame the dems , the GOP is to incompetent to govern and belong in the garbage can with the teaparty idiots!!!!! Enjoy your last year with the majority in the house!!!!!!
seriously the shutdown the shut down, anything new? BRAINWASHING AND IM NOT PURSUADED!
if you look at a glass of clear water you can see right through it because its transparent &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
...all we need ...another crisis made by the Tea Trolls ...more Benghazi, blah blah blah....just mark my words. We have to get these knuckle draggers out of office, 2014 Dems take back the House....Don't believe me...as the moderate Repubs.....They wouldn't be calling the King of Tea Trolls (Teddy Cruz'n for a bruisin') names . I'm loving this...let the village idiots lead the GOP and we get a one party government that is of the people by the people and represents all the people ...not just the hateful, divisive, angry, racist Tea Party
Think hard on this:
Afghanistan has Taliban
Lebanon has Hezbollah
Egypt has Muslim Brotherhood
USA has Tea party to shut down the government
Why can't we start fighting extremism first at Home?
The very fabric of what our country has stood for since 1776 has now become a playtoy to the Republicans and their Tea Party masters. Do we really need another REVOLUTION to keep these people in check; or do we vote them out in 2014?
Blame the shutdown on the republicans and stupid tea party!!
Republicans is spineless and a coward!!
