GOP floats six-week funding and debt ceiling extension

(CNN) – One idea being considered to end the immediate fiscal impasse is a bill to fund the government and extend the nation's borrowing authority for six weeks, a senior Republican member of the House told CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger.

The congressman agreed to speak with CNN on the condition of anonymity.

The GOP lawmaker said a committee could then be set up to negotiate the fiscal issues dividing the two parties and negotiate a plan to keep the government funded for the rest of the year without the proverbial gun to their heads.

This idea of an extension being floated among Republicans would give everyone a temporary political reprieve. It would give them a way to reopen the government but bypass the issue of tying it to a change in Obamacare, as well as avert a crisis over whether to raise the nation's debt limit by Oct. 17 when the Treasury Department has said it will run out of money to pay its bills.

The House Republican told Borger it is "unfair" to promise conservatives in the country something Republicans in Congress just cannot deliver - the defunding of Obamacare.

How much support this type of short-gap measure will garner among Republicans is unclear.

How the White House and congressional Democrats will react is also uncertain, since they have said they would only enter into negotiations about the budget once funding to reopen the government is approved, and this measure would only be a short-term fix.

I can just picture the headline a year from now. "GOP Congressmen and Senate Democrats have agreed to extend the borrowing limit for an estimated five minutes, allowing both parties to regroup and float new strategies."

Why bother? It'll be the same nonsense in 6 weeks. Give the federal employees an even longer extra taxpayer funded vacation. The members of Congress have been enjoying good pay nd beyond full benefits for years without accomplishing anything. They've successfully spread that plan throughout the federal government now. The rest of us will just keep working and paying taxes to fund the year round fiesta.

This was a one sided assault to the country and that side is the GOP! Holding the country hostage and making people lose pay over a law which has been passed and is now up and running whether no matter if there were glitches at first is really DUMB!! Do the GOP really think President Obama would allow anyone to railroad his landmark legislation? What is it about NO Negotiations on Obamacare does Boehner and the GOP not understand. How petty to stop the country because of such pettiness. A law which should never have been put on the table. What a mess the GOP is. THis is not the President or the Senate fault. This is the fault of the GOP/teaparty just because there is division within their own party. No Mr. Boehner, this is not a game, this is serious business that you and your party are not ready for.

Oh goody! So we can deal with all this again just in time for the Holiday season. Stop being a dictator Boehner – allow the house to vote on a clean cr! As long as he does not allow this vote, he is silencing our reps and therefore us, all to appease a radical fringe. Boehner owns this dysfunction.

Maybe I don't understand the finer points of this. How is merely extending the borrowing authority for 6 weeks (which would be after "the limit") anything other than slow default? A default is a default. Doesn't matter if it's slow or fast.

    I agree with Tigas.
If USA has to continue to increase the debt ceiling, it means that our government is incompetent to do what they are "hire" to do.
We can't just continue to borrow money that we don't have.

The GOP are so delusional and such outright liars I don't know how they can ever be leaders of this country. I have listened to them lie before but this morning on CSPAN Radio a Congressman who is a Chaplain got to speak and spied some of the most outrageous lies accusing the administration of planning to arrest priests. Before the debate started they had a visiting chaplain prayed the prayer of St Francis of Assisi and it meant nothing to this Congressman who claimed to be a chaplain and Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn. I just wonder how these people can look at themselves spouting such hate and lies when they know the truth, that they shut down the government taking the country hostage to force the president to surrender, They are such boldface liars I cannot believe anyone would listen to them. Then they have some very ignorant supporters called in pretending to be democrats blaming the shutdown on Democrats and the president, using talking points. The Republicans are losers!

Transparent attempt to shift public that in 6 weeks radical Republicans can force their (minority) will on the majority.

In the future, when the shoe is on the other foot.....I hope that a Republican President stands fast against Democrats who would use these same tactics.

I say shut it down until they can manage responsibly. Awwww, 800,000+ out of work because of it? How about the 11,000,000+ who were out of work before that, and still are? How about people who can't even afford insurance PREMIUMS, let alone direct medical prices? How about our elderly and disabled who have to eat dog food? How about the big banks and other corps getting away with murder, while our retirees are scrambling after a lifetime of saving and investing responsibly? How about the Social Security fund we've all been paying into and will magically run out soon? Our votes don't make a damned bit of difference if those who "represent" our wishes don't address them. They make good money and are under heavy guard, therefore have no need to worry about us common rabble. We used to be able to live comfortably with a one income family. Then we had to resort to 2 income families. Then the two incomes weren't enough, so we'd better get second jobs. Even THEN, there are basic necessities outside of our reach. It's time to stop making excuses and pointing fingers and handle the business that matters!
