Negotiations on shutdown, debt limit stalled

(CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner stated Sunday that a majority of his Republican colleagues continue to stand by their demand that any negotiations over reopening the federal government need to be tied directly to talks over Obamacare. The speaker also warned that Congress would not approve an increase in the nation's debt limit unless the president negotiated with congressional Republicans.

Boehner's comments come as Monday will mark the seventh day of the federal government shutdown. And to complicate matters, the White House has warned the country will no longer be able to meet its financial obligations unless its borrowing power is extended by Oct. 17. The speaker said it was imperative for the president to negotiate with Republicans.

"We're not going to pass a clean debt limit increase," Boehner said, appearing on ABC's "This Week." "I told the president, there's no way we're going to pass one. The votes are not in the House to pass a clean debt limit. And the president is risking default by not having a conversation with us."

Speaking on the government shutdown, Boehner said he stood with his fellow Republicans and emphasized that it was important to "stand and and fight" against the Affordable Care Act.

"I and my members decided the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important that it was time for us to take a stand. And we took a stand," the Ohio Republican said. Later in the interview, Boehner said Republicans were making this stand now because they believe the new healthcare law will have negative, long-term consequences for the country.

"I have 233 Republicans in the House," Boehner said. "And you've never seen a more dedicated group of people who are thoroughly concerned about the future of our country. They believe that Obamacare, all these regulations coming out of the administration, are threatening the future for our kids and our grandkids. It is time for us to stand and fight."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Saturday that she has 195 House Democrats who would support a resolution in line with a budget that has received support from 21 House Republicans to fund the federal government. But, for now, Boehner seems to be dismissing this option.

"This fight was going to come, one way or another. We're in the fight. We don't want to shut the government down," Boehner said, pointing to a series of piecemeal bills the House has passed to fund certain parts of the government, but that the Democratic-controlled Senate refuses to take up. The speaker was particularly critical of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and he criticized Reid's negotiating tactic as "my way or the highway."

"That's what he's saying. Complete surrender and then we'll talk to you."

The Obama administration shot back in response to Boehner's comments on ABC in a tweet by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney following the interview.

Time has come for the GOP to call for Boehner's resignation.

One way to find out - put up a clean CR in the House, and see what the vote count is. I think Boehner is kidding himself if he thinks that a clean CR wouldn't pass.

Interesting that Boehner views doing his job and funding the government as a "surrender".

Gee, I THOUGHT you said this was just to save the country from the affordable care act? My goodness, do you even have a clue what you are doing>? (rhetorical question, it is pretty clear the speaker is 'winging it'

The Speaker allows time, energy and money on votes against the Affordable Care Act 42 times on any given day knowing he doesn't have the votes, yet can't quite seem to bring a vote to the floor to keep the nation running and not taking the economy further because he says we need to trust him that no one would vote for it. .

Makes you wonder who's pockets he is so deep into, that he is willing to pander to the lowest common denominator in this self inflicted, GOP economic wound to what was a recovering economy.

Mr Speaker, have you no sense of decency left? Why are you so determined to sell your mortal soul, your parties soul and the Nations soul along with it? What is so important to you personally, that you would INTENTLY destroy any chance at economic recovery?

No, John of Orange, now is the time you and your cabal wake up to the reality that Obamacare is settled law and you failed to defeat it. it is now up to you to fix the mess you're making, AGAIN. you need to get the teaturd lunatics under control, let the House vote to put the government back to work, and start doing something other than obstructing the president you hate so much. we're sick of your war on Obama and the American people being nothing but collateral damage. do your job or get out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Republicans have been fighting Obamacare since 2010. After 42 unsuccessful attempt to repeal Obamacare, it is time for Republicans to fight Obamacare on their own time, and leave the rest of us in peace.

Actually, it's time to have this thug removed from office either by a recall election or a peaceful revolution by the citizenry.

The president compromised plenty during passage of the Affordable Care Act when it was passed by Congress two years ago. This government shutdown orchestrated by the party that lost an election to Mr Obama two years ago is damaging our economy and our standing in the world.

You lost John. The Supreme Court has said Obamacare is the law of the land. STOP listening to the 28 percent racists in this country. Be a leader instead of a hypocrite.

This man is a liar and a an economic terrorist. Boehner says he didn't want a government shut down.. Wrong, it was calculated to use the budget battle and the debt ceiling as a mechanism to "defund" the ACA months ago. He states he is looking for fairness for the "American people. Wrong again, the government shut down and the "piecemeal approach" leaves small businesses and individuals effectively shut down, not drawing pay, not open for businesses that depend on them (like all of those that sve National parks) all of this while GOP death panels determine who works and who doesn't. The hypocrisy is beyond belief when they talk about the NIH. The GOP stripped 1.2 billion out of for the sequester even before this shutdown. So lets call Boehner what he is along with the entire GOP, if he claims to serve them. He is a liar, a hypocrite, and an economic terrorist.

Piecemeal funding of the things by line item is the modern equivalent of "Whites Only" because we all know where the axe will fall. The GOP is exposed for the joke that it is. It'd be funny if not so painful for the masses.

They were willing to kick kids out of K4 and off of cancer treatments quite easily. Who or what are they exactly fighting for?

As this hyperpartisanship continues, keep a close watch on your Social Security and Mecicare.

    The gov't will reopen

The debt ceiling will be raised.

Prove it. Allow a vote on a clean CR and raising the debt ceiling and see what happens. What Mr. Boehner is saying now is directly opposite of what he said a few weeks ago. There is Republican support for this but they are being strong armed to vote lock in step with the Tea Party group. This is not very democratic.

Don't back down we can't stand anymore debt but the Democrats think all we have to do is borrow or print more money.

This is the tyranny that the Tea Phonies are telling us to watch out for. This tyrant should be removed from office by any means necessary.

Let me understand this. It is OK for Boehner to say to the democrats, you must change the ACA, before we pass spending or debt limit bills, but it is not OK for the democrats to say to the rethuglicans, pass spending and debt ceiling bills before we discuss any changes. Did I miss something here? Well over 50% of americans thing the shutdown is wrong. Boehner is placing his job as speaker over the american public. That is treasonous and he deserves to be thrown out of office.

Speaker Boehner's legacy will be judged as the worst Speaker of the House in modern history in failing to control the Tea Party insurrectionists in his caucus.

Boehner has no choice here. He must comply with the tea party's agenda or lose his job.

Just want to thank all of you for your services as you have so often thanked our military by shutting down our commissaries for those of us who need a break. Wonderful job and I will remember you voting time, Grow up, stop the game playing. We are hurting and you all can afford to shop for your food for your family anywhere. We can not!!!!

"Its time for us to stand and fight"...........
Cute. The true people who actually "stand and fight" are our military, away from home, fighting for America.

If the story is true, our military will not be able to watch any NFL games because of the shutdown. One thing that
gives them some R&R and keeps them close to home is being taken away by your spineless decisions.

Instead of punishing innocent people, have you ever thought to try the legal way to repeal the law? Guess not.

Looks like Boehner is redefining Democracy in US. The key question now is which party really incharge of governance in US. Speaker of the US House of Rep, now determines what the POTUS will do. The whole world should be stunned by these happenings. If Mr. President ever accepts such directive from Boehner for any negotiation based on his terms, he must simply resign as the President.

What an incredible band of thugs. A majority of the house would vote in favor of a clean funding bill, and a despotic minority blocks them. It's becoming painfully clear the the Republican party is incapable of governing responsibly.
