Couple provide $10 million to keep Head Start programs open
(CNN) - Early childhood programs for low-income families in six states, forced to close because of the government shutdown, will reopen with the help of $10 million in emergency funding from billionaire Houston couple Laura and John Arnold, the National Head Start Association said Tuesday.
Some 7,000 children in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Mississippi were affected by the closures, the organization said. As many as 97,000 children in 41 states and one U.S. territory could be affected if the showdown extends into November, the group added.

Thank you Laura and John Arnold for showing that not all Texans are selfish, uncaring, and crazy. I'm sure other
wealthy people from other States are stepping up to the plate, but we have been taking a beating lately, thanks
to our selfish, uncaring and crazy politicians.
This can't go on forever. When these Govt. functions are handled privately & by Charity Groups, we are no longer a Nation. We are a disorganized group of volunteers. The WW II Museum was privately built but can NOT operate 365 days a year w/out GUVMENT.

I've heard that the Koch brothers have helped out some workers at M.I.T. The parents of roughly 60 kids, whose parents worked at M.I.T., found themselves stuck without any place to care for their kids while they worked.

Yes, I remember when the Liberals went in and changed the Texas school curriculum to dumb down the students and teach subjects which supported their crazed political dogma. No, wait, that was the republicants!

well, to be perfectly honest, between N.Y. Calif. & TX. There's where the money is. Texas has 28 million people, and millions of acres of un-developed land. Unlike N.Y. & Cal.
Can u imagine getting the ceo's of goldman saks, warren buffet, carlos slim , bill gates together ? we would be out of debt, if they chipped in.

You are right. It never used to be this way. It used to be that only rich white christian boys were welcomed for education.

I'd like to thank this couple for doing something very nice.
The point that should be made is that the very wealthy like this couple should either be putting their money together to form non-profits to perform functions like Head Start, SNAP, or Medicaid that the federal government is currently doing. If that were the case, then there would less of a need for the federal government to do these social welfare programs that conservatives are constantly complaining about.
