On debt ceiling, Coburn calls for 'managed catastrophe now'

(CNN) - Sen. Tom Coburn continued to stress Wednesday that major spending cuts must take place before Congress agrees to raise the government's debt limit, which he also argued doesn't even exist.

"The debt ceiling has never not been raised, so there is no debt ceiling. And by having a debt ceiling and then raising it every time, it allows the politicians off the hook for making the hard choices," the Oklahoma Republican said on CNN's "New Day."

Coburn said he'd rather have a "managed catastrophe now" than "kick it down the road."

"We can't continue to get an increased limit on our credit card when we're not demonstrating any financial integrity in the way we run our government," he told CNN's Chris Cuomo.

The senator made his point in a more visual way on the Senate floor Tuesday, when he ripped apart a giant poster modeled after a credit card for the U.S. government.

  2. just asking

so all the democrats and liberals are essentially saying we can just keep borrowing 20, 30, 40, 50 trillion dollars to live high off the hog now and just send that debt bill to the next 5-6 generations of americans, yet to be born. is that not the ultimate in taxation without representation??? democrats, liberals and unions only know one thing, take, take, take and take until there is no more and then borrow and take some more.

Old Gunderson see all you fast and free with other people's money. That Train Wreck still coming. Your Liberal Mantra still bad idea. Get out Vaudville. WITH YOUR MONEY AND MY BRAINS, WE WILL GO PLACES. Peasants, stay out of Bank, you know nothing about money. Bank full of Red Ink. You forgot to send your contribution ! You send money up Government now! We 17 Trillion in debt. Send money, now !!
Ray- look the GOP doesn't care about the debt or deficit- it never did. If they ever care about balanced budgets, they wouldn't have gone to war (well, two of them), and for the first time ever in American History- cut taxes at the same time. Yes, the debt is high- but look at the Right, right now- ending the ACA COSTS the government; the shutdown COSTS the government, the default COSTS the government.
You are simply kidding yourself (as if the fake-o accent doesn't demonstrate a degree of denial already) that the GOP is only out for concessions on their wackadoodle ideology. This isn't about the Debt or Deficit- it is a coup d etat, nothing more, nothing less.
