According to multiple sources familiar with the meeting, the President and House Republicans had been going around and around for about an hour with no resolution on a path forward. Republicans emphasizing, over and over, what the House Speaker laid out: pass a six-week debt ceiling extension, then sit down immediately and start negotiating. The negotiations would begin with discussions to fund and re-open the government. The president kept pressing Republicans to re-open the government right away.
Then, according to GOP sources familiar with the meeting, it was the moment that the president and Paul Ryan began engaging that changed the dynamic. The former GOP vice presidential candidate implored the President to deal with Republicans and find a way to work together, telling him they're not going away.
Sources in both parties tell CNN that it was that exchange that led the President to say that the group should break and that Republicans should try to figure out how to pass a bill to re-open the government and what conditions would be necessary to get that through the House.
CNN is also told that another House GOP leader made the point to the President that they needed to come out with some positive news or else the markets could tumble.
Sources in both parties underscore that while the President did not agree to any specific conditions to fund and open the government, he is open to hearing GOP ideas.
paul ryan biggest fraud of all time
The republicans shut down the government but want the president to figure out for them how to re-open it. And they tell the President they need to leave with some good news so that the Markets don't tank. They could remind the Markets that Cruz said they are winning.
Anybody that compares managing a household budget to managing a Country's finances is too stupid to hold office. Managing a household budget is less difficult than running a small business, which is less difficult than running a big business, which is less difficult than running a corporation, which is less difficult...etc., until you get to managing finances for a whole country. Each of those steps is exponentially harder by HUNDREDS of degrees. Making that comparison makes you exponentially dumber by about the same degree. Republicans keep voting these incredibly ignorant people into office, and it's really mystifying. Like having someone (Bachmann) on the Science Committee who doesn't believe in science. Weird!
This is a stupid and information-less "news" story that is nothing but gossip and should not have been written. CNN and Dana Bash: Have you learned nothing from the daily criticism of your "journalism" on the Daily Show?
The republicans can't be trusted as they play the bait and switch game! Everyday their demands change at whim! Their political agenda comes ahead disregarding what is best for the people! They are arrogant and comfortable lying between their teeth!!
Lyin Ryan? the highlight? how sad
telling him they're not going away.
if the US defaults, and SS check and medicare stop, and DOD can't do their job.
they are going away, to Republistan, to their homeland far from the US.
Sadly the extreme side of the republican party will probably now denounce and eat Ryan alive. The party needs more Ryan types and zero Cruz types.
i am not a child quit acting children of cnn you can't tweek the truth
Now every single red and blue states know that government is every thing in our lives, so let's say 2014 if they will come up again about their we want small government bs ,by the way why are they taking taxes from my check when the government is shut down?
As far as this story is concerned Paul Ryan did not make a bit of difference.
Telling the President to work with Republicans because they were not going away. THAT was supposed to be the turning point moment? And isn't that exactly what the President is doing, working with them?
That was one helluva of a spin though CNN.
I'm gonna sit down as I'm feeling dizzy.
GOP ideas? The great deprecession, the Great Recession of 2008, the near economic collapse of 2011, unfunded wars, unfunded drug programs, tax cuts for the wealthy with no revenue to offset them, the government shut down of 2013, no health care for 40 million uninsured, and the final economic disaster for the planet. All this orchestrated by the billionaires who pull the strings of elected republicans.
They are more worried about their investment portfolio than the country.
