(CNN) – Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney cleared a final hurdle Friday in building a new house in California, a house that will include a four-car garage with an elevator for the vehicles.
Romney had already gotten zoning permission from the city of San Diego to demolish the 3,100 square foot home he owns in the La Jolla neighborhood and erect an 11,000 square foot mansion in its place. Plans for the home were put on hold until after the 2012 election.
A neighbor had appealed the city's decision to the California Coastal Commission. He argued in commission filings that the new home would have exceeded zoning limits that say square footage cannot exceed a certain calculation based on acreage of the plot of land the house sits on.
The Coastal Commission rejected that appeal Friday. Barring a lawsuit, construction can now move forward, according to commission spokesperson Sarah Christie.
Romney, the multimillionaire former governor of Massachusetts, drew significant heat from his opponents during the 2012 election for his wealth. They charged that Romney's estimated $250 million fortune put him out of touch with average Americans and a car elevator crystallized that message for many.

I am so so umimpressed. Why can't he building an elevator so huge, an entire jumbo jet can be lifted up to the runway ... kinda like an air craft carrier. I am also angry about how all the little people keep yammering about theri lowly minimum wage. We need to have a maximum wage instead ... of exactly nothing. 100% mandatory employment at no pay. If you seem to productive, to be ambitious ... then you would be valuable. And whoever owns you ... could take you to an auction and bit you up ... make a profit out of you, a "Christian" profit I might add.
It is nothing unusual. An Indian cinema star Hrithik Roshan has included a car lift exclusively to his 11th/12th floor apartment in Mumbai. He will also have an all weather swimming pool in the 11th floor.
While the liberals mocked the elevator they forgot to ridicule the company and the workers who manufactured the elevator, the contractors who will earn money installing it, the repairmen who will earn money repairing and maintaining it. No, let's just close the plant that makes the elevators and fire all the people involved in making the parts, repairing and maintaining the unit so the libs can feel better about themselves. They will feel better when these workers end up on the government dole.
So long as it has clearance for the roof-mounted dog crate!
pimp.
Money buys all......
Hilarious. You're "network" is pathetic. Its pseudo journalism. Floods, natural disasters etc. How many times do you air fluffy psychoogical puff pieces al a cotton candy for the mind instead of talking about actual things.

An elevator, that.s just gross, a disgusting waste let alone the waste of a 11,000. sq ft home. I do not care how many millions of grand kids hes got. Shame on you Mitt.
Just a common republican male. Does the elevator reach the top floor. Hope he doesn't forget to take the dog off the top.
If Obama had a house like this no one would object!
How is this news?
Good for him. I think it's awesome.
It's unfortunate that people have become so vile towards others who've been successful with money. I hope he will enjoy his new home, though there's little doubt as La Jolla is quite nice!
That's definitely the garage for the 1%. Im sure Mitt will have lots of time to play upsie-downsie in his garage since Ryan looks like the Koch brothers intend to make him the 2016 GOP candidate by having him blow into D.C. and magically break the budget stalemate with president Obama. So obvious
Any chance Mitt could pay the interest due on our notes with China??? Afterall, a good majority of that interest is paid on two wars that should have never been waged by George Bushie Bush and the Republican Congress back in 2002l. And of course the Medicare Part D supplement insurance that was signed into law and paid for by WE, the TAXPAYERS, because Bush never even tried to find a way to pay for it! He just stuck it onto our Government Credit Card!
Romney would never miss one dime of his money!! Come to think of it, perhaps Romney can just pay China off completely!! That way,we won't have to worry about a debt ceiling for a very long time!
Hey Mitt?? DEAL??????
That's awesome
Why doesn't he invest some money in a way that creates jobs?
Give Mittens a break. Everybody NEEDS a car elevator.
Exactly what America needs: a President with an elevator for his cars.
Who cares? He's nothing more than a historical footnote.
If he thinks he'll ever get elected to the WH his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top.
This is news why?
nice to see you have no worry for money. my paycheck gets threatened and all my landlord cares about is i get my check to him on the first. way to go man...
Maybe one of the Earth Liberation Front tree-huggers will torch it JUST before he moves in..LOLLOLOLOLOL
I hate him
It's so nice to see wealth trickling up to the .1%. Heartwarming... almost.
