Mitt Romney gets his car elevator

(CNN) – Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney cleared a final hurdle Friday in building a new house in California, a house that will include a four-car garage with an elevator for the vehicles.

Romney had already gotten zoning permission from the city of San Diego to demolish the 3,100 square foot home he owns in the La Jolla neighborhood and erect an 11,000 square foot mansion in its place. Plans for the home were put on hold until after the 2012 election.

A neighbor had appealed the city's decision to the California Coastal Commission. He argued in commission filings that the new home would have exceeded zoning limits that say square footage cannot exceed a certain calculation based on acreage of the plot of land the house sits on.

The Coastal Commission rejected that appeal Friday. Barring a lawsuit, construction can now move forward, according to commission spokesperson Sarah Christie.

Romney, the multimillionaire former governor of Massachusetts, drew significant heat from his opponents during the 2012 election for his wealth. They charged that Romney's estimated $250 million fortune put him out of touch with average Americans and a car elevator crystallized that message for many.

What the envious never realize is that successful people either directly or indirectly employ millions of Americans to a greater extent than one of less means can. Who made the parts for the elevator, who put it together, who shipped it, who installed it, who will service it? The same goes for the cars parked in it (Romney buys American Cars). Be glad there is someone willing to spend money or to create a business that will provide you with a job while you attempt to create your own success.

This is your tax dollars at work people. Even if its not paying directly for the home. Congressmen always have an advantage in the supposed "free" market.

This just demonstrates how out of touch this man is. Why they thought he was Presidential material is beyond commonsense. We don't need more rich, con artists in office. We need people that understand how most Americans get through their lives in this economy. Romney isn't one to understand anything but how the wealthy feel. That is why the GOP is how it is today. They gave up on actually being conservative and just pandered to the very rich and wealthy. Well we won't have to worry about it after the 2014 elections. The GOP is finished as a majority party on the national stage. Maybe they can recover in a decade or two.

The Mittster simply wants to get his cars a little closer to Heaven so they will be easier to access once he makes the move.Any upward movement is good.

The important point here is that Rmoney did what all wealthy developers do (because they gotta get everything they want and get it now!). He hired a lawyer to intimidate the planning and governing boards into granting the permits. This plays out in thousands of town councils every day. "You don't give me what I want, I'm going to sue!" is always the implicit threat from the silk-suited lawyer standing before the board. And, with public coffers more and more depleted (thanks in no small part to Tea Party efforts), they can't afford to defend against a suit, so they fold just about every time.

Why is it that people will come down on an accomplished business person who builds themselves a nice house but yet will have no problem with a rapper, who glorifies drugs and violence, when the rapper purchases a lamborghini and smashes it up?

He's been a pretty nice guy around town here in San Diego. He's been spotted at CostCo buying groceries and toys for his grandkids. My friend saw him at a car rental place, too. He waited in line like anyone else. I also saw his signature on a napkin up on the wall at a local Jersey Mike's sub shop. His two sons live in my neighborhood of 4S Ranch. I've grandkids were attending the local PUBLIC school. (I'm not sure if this is true any more, as I don't know anyone with kids that would be in their grade to verify).

That this car elevator business is still or ever was mentioned in the media just shows how biased, unprofessional, lacking in perspective, and hypocritical the media is. When BHO is finished with his second costly, lackluster and unproductive term of non-stop campaigning and posturing, we'll all be wishing we had instead had a president that could actually get things done, even if he had car elevator. Isn't that just pretty much what very auto repair shop has, anyway?

This brilliant, patriotic American can, indeed, spend his EARNED wealth as he sees fit. Did you ever stop to think this convenience will make life easier for his beautiful, accomplished wife, who has a medical condition? If Romney had been elected, he would have solved most, if not all, the problems facing our country. Mainly, he would have gotten the Democrats, by now, to realize there is only one way to solve our long-term fiscal difficulty, even if he had to knock basic economics into their partisan heads.

the next time romy runs for pres and says i'm one of you people...he's talking about the "poor" people of santa monica and the "unfortunate" are those with home values under 5 million and 8000 square feet. What a complete farce this former candidate is!

@MD, the only jobs the twit has created are in China after taking them away from American workers.
One of his foreign factories has the barb wire bent in trying to keep his slavsz from leaving the factory here they probably get paid nothing!
A handful of workers building his car elevators, after he probably paid off the county, does not constitute prolong work.

Why is the Mittster setting up such fanciful digs in a blue state? He'd fit right in with his trough-chowing squealer comrades in a deep red state, like Oklahoma. Guess he's confused, he talks red but loves to be in and around blue.
