Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.
The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.
Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.
"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."
Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"
To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

To use the same tactics as republicans Obama should refuse to sign anything unless it contains a ban on assault rifles. Then see if republicans want to negotiate away their gun rights.
The Tea Party are traitors of our nation, our government and the People. Their only goal is to destroy everything out of their sick extremist ignorance and hatred and bigotry.
A rally in front of the White House carrying Confederate flags was sickening. The Confederate flag represents hate and racism and it beyond disgusting they stood with them before the White House where our 1st black President lives.
The People need to wake up and bring down and get these destroyers out of every elected office in 2014. We are going to have to start over just like we did after Bush brought down our economy in 2008.
Rangel must have skipped history class. Confederates were mostly Democrats. The same Democrats that spawned the KKK and Jim Crow laws.
The TP's are not confederates, they are vandalists. The don't have the ability to create, and they feel left out, so they destroy. They think destruction is an accomplishment, just like any mentally disturbed delinquent. If Boehner had guts, he would get rid of these extortionists. The first thing Obama needs t do is stop negotiating with Boehner, since Boehner apparently no longer has much clout in the party. Negotiating with him is a waste of time.
He may have a point that the way they hard nosed Republicans are behaving is similar to Southern states representatives were behaving just before secession and the civil war. However he needs to check his history. Those supporting secession and the expansion of slavery was Democrats. It was the Republicans in the North and who supported limiting or abolishing slavery. He has his parties confused.
Confederates? I think not. Perhaps more like revolutionists when Britain's monarchial government became untolerable. The US debt is at an all time high now...two term president at the helm, congressional impasse...
It's times like this I almost wish the they were allowed to secede.
I see Charlie's age is starting to show up in his comments. Another politician that wants to divide this country.
The TP states are going to be hit HARD when the government defaults. Most of those states get on average $1.50 return from the federal government for every $1 in taxes they pay. But what do you expect from ideological idiots.
The Tea Party has done what Osama Bin Laden could not – shut down the US Government.
He's right, and their hatred of Obama is rooted in Confederate separatism.
He's right. Their dislike for Obama is rooted in Confederate separatism.
Call this anarchy what it is: Treason.
I was wondering why a law suit could not be filed to challenge the procedural rules on bringing a bill to the floor.
it seems to me something it is not democratic if it prevents a bill from introduction when the majority will vote for it and that majority was elected to represent the people. Are the peoples rights not violated?
I was thinking more on the line of Benedict Arnold
I guess that would explain their visceral hatred of President Obama.
bob doesn't know what he is talking about and nothing about the economy. Typical talking point. The president is far from a socialist, actually, do you know what the word means... Financial responsibility is paying your bills and tightening your belt as you go, not skipping out on paying your bills or causing hundreds of thousands of people to go without paychecks. The Tea Party has been nothing but a cancer to the Republicans and now they have almost destroyed the party.
Was the President a Confederate when he voted against an increase in the debt limit in 2006? Why is this never brought up in a press conference? oh right. Charlie Rengel represents Harlem, a community that I have lived next too almost all of my life. I have driven through it, biked through it and I know it well. The leadership in Harlem (Rengel etal.) and the neighboring Bronx that continues to keep Black people down with the welfare programs and lack of decent school alternatives are the current day Confederates. Also, Mr. Rengel, pay your taxes and then you can continue to live in this great country.
Rangel – What a sad small minded corrupt little man that survives on race baiting and living in the past.
The country survived from it's inception on a mix of politics and ideology, but the tea party have stopped playing politics and are now running on pure ideology. This means that compromise and government are impossible with them since they will not tolerate an alternate view point. The only solution is total and complete defeat of the tea party and all that blindly follow that failed ideology if the US is going to survive as a free country where all men are created equal.
19 of the 30 red states were not even states or in the Confederacy during the War Between the States. It was a nice try at spin, I'm sure Democrats like Rangle have a hard time being in the party of slavery. They have just traded one kind for another.
Our country has been spit on by both democrats and republicans. The American people deserve better than what we have been given, we deserve a budget. We deserve to pay taxes and know that the money we pay is going to go towards growth for our future generations. We have no end in sight for the debt ceiling increases. The next time anyone is up for election in Congress we should vote every single one of them out.
Time to wake Sherman from the dead and start teaching lessons again.
Bob, why didn't you mention Bush's TRILLIONS of deficits on tax cuts for the 1%'rs and two wars that accomplished nothing during his administration except to make his cabinet and cronnies filthy rich?
we need a modern day gen sherman with a free hand...that ought to scare the south....
