Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.
The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.
Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.
"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."
Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"
To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

I agree with your premise Bob that no one should spend lavishly on someone elses sweat. However to remain on topic, your comment sure sounds alot like what the Confederate slave owners fought and died to continue doing.
Rep. Charles Rangle is correct – (forget about the Dixicrat comment). The parallels are striking. Both believe that they could ignore duly passed laws – without repealing them. Both have total disdain for the Federal Government – with the Confederates having wanted to secede from the Union – and – House Republicans wanting to do the same by having the government secede from them – by totally dismantling the government. Both are secessionists. Both ignore duly passed legislation.
If the South tries to rise again, I will fight on the side of the American flag and hope that we cam retain America as one.
Republican Tea Party inflammatory and delusional rhetoric validates Rep Rangel's assessment.
I guess the Republicans don't meet the ethically challenged Rangel's standards.
The Tea Party is a group of thugs..plain and simple. Look at the weasel looking Cruz...he is in the senate less than a year and he thinks he knows what he is doing? I think not. That is the problem with the Tea Party they are ignorant citizens that came out of the hollars and from under dead stumps and came to DC to bring their level of zero experience. It will catch up on them...already Cruz is being looked at by some TV stations in Texas....he is not the lily white "ferret face" he seems.
Easy comparison to make as they do photo ops in front of the Confederate flag.
Rangel has been caught in numerous ethics violations and been caught not paying his taxes. He belongs in prison, not Congress.
If a white politician had made the confederate statement, it would have been plastered as racist all over the media. Blacks just can't be racist anymore. How lucky for them.
Republicans are saying that the House, whose sole responsibility is to fund the government by law, isn't to blame because they funded everything but Obamacare (is that all of the lawful government – I didnt think so). An analogy is the House passes funding that doesn't include Social Security, they are not shutting down the government, because the Senate and the President have all the money they need for everything but social security. Give me a break. If this kind of bs politics is allowed to stand, the next thing will be social security and medicare and that is not the way we run this government folks.
I guess madison, adams, and jefferson, among others were confederates.
How insulting.
This has nothing to do with race not geography but soley about fiscal responsibiity.
This crook just gave the Tea Party members the highest compliment. Not bad a neo-carpet bagger.
Michele Bachmann is a great example. Like Palin, she gave up her office in lieu of a more lucrative career. And Michele Bachmann received the support of less than 4% of Republican voters nationally. Great example Banfield. The tax lawyer with 23 foster exemptions is a perfect representative of the Tea Party Taliban.
What a bunch of fools! The tea party should take a few economic classes.
It would be interesting to know how many teabaggers are supporting their parents so the parents don't have to draw SS and Medicare or plan to do so in the futrure
If they did those states did secede it would benefit the rest of the country. Those are the states that pay least in federal taxes and they draw the most in federal funds.
Who needs foreign Terrorists when we have Congress and especially Boehner and the GOP? With their fanaiticism they have shown they are willing, and more than able, to bring America to its knees
It's the truth. Traitors who are trying to bring the country down. they've been saying they wanted the country to fail, looks like they're finally succeeding in making it happen. Just like OBL Kind of makes you wonder, who really is, the country's biggest threat from? AQ? or right wingers? seems the right wingers have done more damage to the country than AQ has....
and this is the type of partisan comment this nation is sick of. Who would work with this person in any fair capacity after his comment?
so 'ol wrangle compares them to the confederates, huh ? LOL – well, to be perfectly honest, he's right. But I'm not originally from Tx. I saw his interview with one of the CNN anchors today, and I heard him boasting about being in the senate for 43 years.... LOL – well, those people he represents in the Bronx & Queens, will vote him in, every time. Guess you could call 'ol wrangle a "Lifer" LOL – Stay in there, Charlie, your doin a fine Job.
Oh please, just let us secede! That would make everyone happy
Considering one of the issues vis a vis ACA is states rights vs. federal government (which was also one of the civil war issues) this shouldn't really be all that surprising...
(and, fwiw, the Supreme court actually upheld part of the states rights argument this time 'round, which is why that chunk of ACA was invalidated)
Rubbish! These people are political terrorists! This isn't the 1800's. This is the 21st Century. America is the biggest and the best because of our elected government. The tea party wants to go backwards, and that just won't work in this day and age without destroying America from within. Gee, isn't that what one AQ leader said right after 9/11? AQ doesn't have to destroy American. We will do it ourselves from within. Enter the radical and extremist tea party! If they get their way, this country will never be the same again. They must be stopped!!!
Hey Bob, do you even know what the debt ceiling is? Last time I checked, it is money already spent (borrowed). Remember the two unfunded wars by the last clown? Are you saying the US should not pay its bills? Were these wars going to be paid with some sort of magical fairy dust? It's time to pay up.
The dishonorable Rangel showing the Democrats are the party of corrupt knee grows.
