Rep. Charles Rangel compares tea party in House to 'confederates'
Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.
The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.
Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.
"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."
Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"
To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

I don't know about that characterization....I don't think the current GOP is quite as patriotic as the Confederates were.
Rangel has it 1000% correct. This is a slave state issue and a carry over from the civil war. The south needs to come to grips with it.. You lost- get over it... move on.. Adios -

In 2013 the remaining vestiges of the US Civil War are being fought within the GOP. Once again, the hellions are convinced that their treacherous cause is noble. The "Southern Strategy" was a devil's bargain. The Democrats repudiated it in 1964. It's time for the Republican Party to do the same.

@Bob – I personally am glad t that Obamacare is coming. Not because I want freeloaders to take advantage of it. Not because I think those people with a gimme mentality will abuse it. Rather, as a small business owner, I will enjoy that my employee's are healthier. It means they can work more and make me more money.
I do not need to listen when they are complaining about having to sit at the ER all day because they have no coverage. It will now be, take your kid to a doctor and get it sorted out. Be back in 2 hours, not 2 weeks of them sitting at home waiting out the illness.

As an elderly.Southern WASP I take exception with Hon.Rangel comparing my ancestors of which many served in the Confederate Army and were doing so to defend their homeland from the invading Union Army,to unreasonable members of congress and a president intent on socializing our country.I am retired and do not appreciate congress and the President risking destroying our economy over something that should be resolved at the ballot box.I think the entire bunch a should be recalled.
Even during the civil war there were northerners who supported many of the confederate causes. .
They were called the Copperheads and like the Tea party they had a snake as their symbol.
Yes, the Confederates in the South were Democrats before and after the war. In 1948, however, they got fed up with the northern liberals in their party and became "Dixiecrats." In 1964, when the northern liberals passed major civil rights legislation, they became Republicans. The Republican party of today is very much the Democratic party of yesterday, and there is no doubt whatsoever that if Lincoln were alive today, he would be a Democrat.

I'm old enough to remember how the GOP party got established in the south. It was segregation first, last and always. Nixon Southern strategy all the way. Everything else is sales talk. Sure there are African American GOPs here and there. There have always been blacks who decided that "passing" was the best way to get ahead.
History shows that the "Confederates" were democrats. Silly goose They were pro slavery then and still are now.
