Obama to renew call for immigration reform

Updated 8:11 p.m. ET, 10/23/2013

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama plans to urge Congress on Thursday to take back up comprehensive immigration reform.

The White House says that Obama will make the announcement on Thursday (at 10:35 a.m.) The statement will be delivered in the White House East Room.

“Commonsense immigration is good for the country and it’s the right thing to do. It will grow the economy, reduce the deficit, and has broad support from both democrats and republicans, business and labor, as well as law enforcement and faith leaders,” a White House official said.

“The President has made clear the key principles that must be a part of any bipartisan, commonsense effort, including continuing to strengthen border security, creating an earned path to citizenship, holding employers accountable, and bringing our immigration system into the 21st century.”

Immigration reform had been placed on the backburner after the Democrat-controlled Senate passed a bill in June that went nowhere in the House of Representatives. Controlled by Republicans, the House has said it would prefer to undertake a number of smaller bills instead of the one large package passed by the Senate.

House Democrats introduced their own version at the beginning of the month, one without the huge expansion of the Border Patrol included in the Senate bill.

One of the most contentious parts of the Senate version was a one-year path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Many Republicans have rejected any route to legal status as amnesty for lawbreakers.

How can our President be pushing to allow in people with no jobs and no legal right to be here when 90 million Americans (That's roughly 1 in 3) have no job. Most of them no longer qualify for Unemployment so that's why the Unemployment rate is dropping. 90 million out of 270 million adults (roughly), its a disgrace. We need jobs, we need revenue, we need to be able to feed our kids, we are broke, sorry world we can no longer help you, oh and this yahoo just sent 1.8 billion to Pakistan, while American families go hungry and jobless. Obama is a disgrace. This 90 million total was reported by the department of labor and statistics and is reported in the wall street journal.

Commonsense immigration IS good for the country. Amnesty for illegal, trespassing lawbreakers has NOTHING to do with common sense. Or immigration.

How can letting people into this country that will send most of the money back to their country be good for our economy?

It won't do anything, seeing as how Republicans are split on the issue. They better get themselves together unless they want to be slaughtered in the next election, but I don't see them doing that anytime soon. Oh, and can we make the bill a bit better this time around?

Oh now we want to talk about immigration. Now that we have nothing to talk about right we want to talk about immigration. This always seems to be last on the to-do list when it should be first on everyones prioritys. Having 10 million plus undocumented is really not the best idea if we want to get this country back on its feet. Imagine how much tax revenue would come from 10 million plus people, probably enough to dig us out this hole. This country as a whole can benefit from passing an immigration reform Whether its from tax revenue, more jobs ,or simply for the safety of this country . Having all these people here undocumented is really irresponsible. Imagine how hard it would be to find someone who commits a crime who cannot be traced. Its hard enough catching the ones that are citizens. Its time for someone to do something, and something fast because you know what they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Either fix the problem or be part of the problem

I agree with the need for reform, but not the type obama wants. Its time to stop the apology for illigal imigrints. If you come here legally, speak English, and have a desire to americanize, then they should have a shot. However, anyone who is here illegally should not be given a shot. They are criminals and need to be treated as such. I live in a "sanctuary state", and if an illigal imigrent with no license gets pulled over, they are let go. It is crap. Why do hard working Americans have to follow the law, but illigals can do what they please. If is sad sick, and just an atempt to gain votes from the legal relitives, and anchor babies. Politics is the most sicophantic carrier possible.

how about enforcing existing laws first? capture and expel all illegal aliens and continue to welcome (legal) immigrants. how hard is that to understand?

Obama is not trying to pass immigration reform. The dumb Republican are playing checkers while Obama plays chess. Case and point. He holds up the immigration reform red meat while deporting more illegals than any other administration. Then sit back and watch the ravenous repugs destroy themselves in anger while chewing on the red meat at the direction of Rush and Fox. As a result, Hispanics rush to vote against them. Democrats win without passing immigration reform. Works every time.

He hasn't gotten the mess called Obamacare fixed and he is ready to start another one. Is he doing this in an attempt to take the spot light off of Obamacareless?

Translation – we need more Democrat voters....there are still enough people working and actually stupid enough to keep paying income taxes....we can afford to give more people more "free" stuff in order to buy votes.....
