Cruz pheasant hunts, bashes Obamacare in Iowa

(CNN) - Decked out in blaze orange and tan hunting gear with a coffee in one hand and a shotgun in the other, tea party favorite Texas Sen. Ted Cruz took his anti-Washington establishment tune to the Hawkeye state Saturday morning, pheasant hunting on opening day with GOP Rep. Steve King.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should “absolutely” step down, Cruz said, perched at the bar at the Hole N' the Wall Lodge in Akron, Iowa, eating eggs and answering questions from journalists before the hunt.

"Obamacare is a disaster. You have the well-publicized problems with the website. It just isn't working,” he said.

"This administration has turned a cold heart to the millions of Americans who are suffering, who are pushed into part-time work. There are single moms all over this country trying to feed their kids on 29 hours a week because of Obamacare, and this administration has said that there will be no relief for the people who are hurting because of this failed policy.”

Delays and incorrect information relayed to insurance companies has sparked intense criticism from Republicans over the implementation of President Barack Obama’s sweeping healthcare initiative. House Republicans, spearheaded by Cruz, tried without success earlier this month to tie defunding or delaying the law to legislation funding the government.

The hunt kicked off with a prayer asking for safety and expressing appreciation for the Second Amendment. Cruz said he has hunted a number of other birds, including quail and dove, but Saturday would be his first time hunting pheasant. And, though he enjoys the sport, he admitted "in the world of experienced hunters I don't stack up."

Cruz's pheasant hunt in Iowa, a state crucial to presidential hopefuls, follows a speech last night at Iowa’s Reagan Dinner, further fueling speculation of his future plans. Cruz also will address an audience at the Defenders of Freedom later Saturday afternoon.

When asked about the parallels of his visit and that of former presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry's similar trip in 2011, Cruz called it a "dangerous comparison."

"Well you know, that's a very dangerous comparison on a lot of fronts, not least of which is that Gov. Perry is a lot better shot than I am. So I'm going to avoid making that comparison," he joked.

Cruz has not endorsed a candidate in Iowa's increasingly crowded 2014 Republican primary for the open Senate seat left vacant by retiring Sen. Tom Harkin, though he did leave open the possibility of throwing his support behind one of the conservatives at a later date.

NBC covered this story too, they focused on comparing this hunt to the Cheney hunt a lot more, and said much less about the disparaging remarks concerning Obamacare. I cancelled my subscription to NBC I just couldn't take the blind partisanship, CNN is only a little bit less so, this hunting trip is not newsworthy, but at least in covering it we got to hear that "Obamacare is a disaster," that Cruz prays, and is in favor of the 2nd amendment. Still, from the comments posted, I can see that the readership are mainly Cruz haters so I do feel a bit alienated. Am I reading the wrong news source? Are there any conservatives out there in this audience, or should I just go away? Please don't be shy to let me know. There are lots of news sources out there who would be glad to have me read them instead of this one..

Farmer s that provide food products for the world, I have something to tell you. Many of you folks are honest farmers that rely on subsidies to operate from year to year; you use the subsidy money to prepare for the next year’s crops; and, many of you folks are big land owners identifiable as greedy crooks that looks to make millions off the subsidies that are given to you each year through favor from a politician or some other scheme that the Agriculture Secretary gives the O.K. to pay your request for money. A lot of you are in states like Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Idaho, Oklahoma, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wyoming, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Utah and Texas. The reason you are not getting the subsidy now is that your favorite Congressional Party, the GOP/Tea Party, voted not to give it to you. Cruz probably realigned some of your crop subsidies to Texas oil or something even more bizarre. But guess what, the Democratic Party is working very hard to get you your operating subsidy money and even the money for you crooks to build your investment eggs; and, while they are doing their job they are working to give food stamps back to the starving and poor individuals in America. It will happen soon and the GOP/Tea Party members will want to take the credit; but, you and I know the truth.
We need to issue each GOP/Tea Party member of Congress a vacuum cleaner, broom and dust cloth and tell them to get to work because the American people don’t need them in Congress anymore. Now I know some of you farmers are kinda dense, but try not to be fooled, the GOP/Tea Party members are not in your corner for this fight; they do not want anything that the current administration favors. Get the word out and let us clean out the Congress; give the President, be he black or white, a group of elected people that are in favor of what helps America and not buy votes for them. America first; vote the GOP/Tea Party out of Congress and State governments so we can be American strong.

  4. Dad of a Type 1 Diabetic

Senator Cruz should visit a children's diabetic center and a children's cancer center, in Iowa, and tell the children, being treated, that he is going to do everything he can legally do to make sure that insurance companies can drop them, and he will try to make them uninsurable for the rest of their lives. The only plan Senator Cruz has is to return to the old system of insurance companies making all the decisions. My child was born healthy. I never dreamed that my child would have to wear an insulin pump in order to live. A deadly disease can strike anyone's child at anytime. Senator Cruz displays a cold hearted indifference toward children with deadly diseases.

Any two bit politician can bash a law, but he would only be credible if he would have his own plan that the CBO could look at. Ted has no plan, he is nothing more than Limbaugh in pink tights.

there is a lot of us that hunts......that hunting thing isn't the issue.......gabby & her husband mark Kelly has guns & they hunt, as well as millions of us that does....Again, that isn't the issue, nor the problem....
He goes to Iowa, where the whites are a 95% problem with that either......
And he's got 600 people at his rally.... ( Six Hundred – – approx.) He comes back to a heros welcome to Houston to what ? around 200 people ? or approx. 200 or so ? Then he travels to San Antonio, and gets another 200 or 300 people to attend his "welcoming home rally" ok....nothing wrong with that......
But, does he really think he's a "contender" and thinks his "grass roots" thing – is gonna work out for him, like it did for Reagan ? I mean, think about it, this is 2013, not 1980......this is the internet age....
To be perfectly honest, I didn't think he would get that many to come out in Houston ( approx. 200 + ) since we've got a Mayor that is not only a Democrat, but she is openly gay.....
So, the bottom line is this...he can visit all those Caucasian folks in Iowa as many times as he wants, but just because Iowa is the First State to "Kick off" the presidential elections (so to speak) doesn't mean he's got the POTUS Job in the bag, so to speak.....
    I rest my case.....

Ted is no worse than Obama out campaigning instead of doing his job in the office he was elected to. You posters do realize it is not the governments job to create jobs. Obama can say all he wants he's created jobs. His actions pushing more red tape and EPA laws say otherwise. Governments only job is to create a better atmosphere for job creators. Obama has done nothing except throw money away in stimulus supporting the DOW and Wall Street. And when he quits doing that all the investors will lose their behinds!

What do Dick Cheney and President Obama have in common? They both promote no-bid contracts to rhe

To be honest, the same people bankrolling this guy and the tea-party (aka) the Koch brothers shipped a ton of jobs overseas because they can pay people $1 to $2 per hour. I don't particular care for either party, but I have to say people that think that this guy is for anything else except to fulfill his own ambition is clearly mistaken.
