Obama calls to congratulate Christie

(CNN) - President Barack Obama called Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey Wednesday afternoon as the Garden State Republican was walking into an event at Jose Marti Freshman Academy in Union City, New Jersey, sources tell CNN.

The president was calling to congratulate Christie on his re-election victory Tuesday night. Christie called the president back after the event, and the two spoke for a few minutes.

The White House announced late Tuesday evening that Obama called three Democrats who won prominent races in Boston, New York City and Virginia, but there was no mention of whether he reached out to congratulate any Republicans.

Notably, Obama and Christie have had an amicable relationship, though Christie has not been afraid to express frustration with the president at times.
