Pro-Obamacare group raises over $27 million for outreach campaign

Washington (CNN) - Enroll America, the major outside group pushing uninsured Americans towards Obamacare, announced Tuesday it has raised more than $27 million since March to help fund its outreach efforts.

The group also touted outreach numbers showing its field staff in ten states has reached out to more than 300,000 consumers since its "Get Covered" campaign began.

[twitter-follow screen_name='politicalticker']

"Within those 300,000 we've been able to have substantive, meaningful, back-and-forth conversations with over 60,000 consumers, leading to a number we have now of well over 30,000 consumers who have identified themselves as either uninsured or under-insured and very, very interested in wanting to take steps to be able to enroll in the marketplace in the months to come," field director John Gilbert told reporters on a conference call.

This puts the group on pace to help over 300,000 uninsured or under-insured Americans learn more about how to enroll in Obamacare, Gilbert asserted.

Enroll America has staff in Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The group announced plans Tuesday to expand to Tennessee, where, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 900,000 people are uninsured.

"The numbers are pretty staggering when you look at it," Craig Becker, president of the Tennessee Hospital Association, said on the conference call.

"There's 500,000 people who are eligible for some sort of a subsidy from the exchange and certainly contacting them is going to be a major, major project."

Becker added that at least 200,000 Tennesseans could be eligible for Medicaid if the state decided to take the federal government up on its offer to fund an expansion of the state-run program.

Enroll America doesn't directly enroll consumers in new insurance, but rather helps direct uninsured Americans towards state-based assisters, navigators or help centers where they can purchase insurance.

As an outside group, Enroll America receives the same updates on the government's efforts to repair Healthcare.gov as members of the media, the group's president Anne Filipic said.

Filipic said she expects the site to be functioning by the end of November as the administration has promised.

"We thought that come October 1 the website was going to be functioning well," Filipic said. "That was our expectation, and when it wasn't, we rolled with it."

"We continued the work we were doing - the education and the outreach - which was always going to be sort of the forefront of our work for the first month or so of enrollment," Filipic added.

"So we are expecting things to be working better then. I will say that we have steadily seen progress in that regard."

Hey, CNN, why don't you do a nice little update to this article to explain everything red states like TX and LA are doing to try to make it impossible or even criminalize what groups like this are doing, which is simply informing people, undoing fear and misinformation spread by the GOP/Teatrolls and advocating for people to follow the law, helping them sign up on the exchange if they need to do so. No? You'd rather help the GOP/Teatrolls hide more of their disgusting attempts to interfere and break the implementation of the ACA?

$27 milllion to promote government dependence. And we wonder why we have a country full of government dependents? People better be prepared for 90% federal income tax rates if the Democrats keep getting elected. There is no end to their appetite for your pay check. And the 16th amendment gives them that power. Time to repeal it and rewrite it with a hard limit otherwise we will all be nothing but government slaves.

If these red states expanded their Medicaid rolls, then you'll see a flood of more people signing up. Thank goodness McAuliffe won Virginia and is intent on expanding our Medicaid rolls.

Seeing as how the only groups denied were liberal groups, I suppose we can get into this irrelevant question, even if you only brought it up because you're desperate to revive the dead nontroversy. Of course, Enroll America doesn't use the word "progressive" or other highly politicized name variants the IRS was using to find applications from groups whose activities could potentially violate their tax exempt status by venturing into the realm of political activity, so these guys were probably fine. Of course, the lack of any such tag in their name just highlights how irrelevant your question was.

didn't the federal government already spend/waste hundreds of millions of our tax dollars on this type of publicity/propaganda campaign?

  8. The REAL Truth...

Yeah, CNN needs to report on the thinly veiled attempts to prevent ANY Texans from signing up by requiring things like background checks on navigators!! Why does a navigator need a background check... oh, yeah.. they might be illegals trying to vote Dem.

Perhaps the trolls should do a little research before spouting gar_bage!!! US GDP has ALWAYS been higher and the economy doing better when the highest tax rates have been 70% or higher... it's a FACT... look it up... it's not hard to find.

No, just the uber wealthy, Donna. Just like it was when fathers worked and mothers stayed home to watch the kids and we all lived in that idyllic 50's world of Happy Days. Isn't that the Good Ol' days republicants always talk about?

You're making a false assumption. What makes you think that the group organization is so newly formed? It is just as likely that this group applied for that status 2 or 3 years ago, as 2 or 3 months ago.

And if nobody should be out there trying to accurately inform people about what the law entails, how it will effect them and how to go about enrolling and accessing the assistance the law provides for obtaining insurance coverage, then why should people/groups out there be spending all their time doing nothing but demagoguing the law, telling lies about it, deliberately misinforming and scaring people about how it is set up, how it works, who it will effect them, etc., and actively trying to discourage them from trying to inform themselves or sign up? Hmmm? If the RWNJ messaging apparatus and corporate proxies, not to mention the MSM feeding off RWNJ red meat demagoguery, hadn't been so busy for the past 5 years doing all of that, then this Enroll America group would probably never have been necessary or come into existence or been capable of raising so much money.

"Their site identifies themselves as a 501(c)(3)."

Well, there's another distinction with a difference. The entities involved in the nontroversy were primarily 501(c)(4). The 3s are for charities, whereas the 4s are for "social welfare" groups. The former have pretty strict rules not as easily abused as the ones for the latter. Sooo, the latter are/were the ones being abused to collect massive amounts of dark money to be funneled into political campaign advertising or to be laundered into campaigns, etc., by funneling money through numerous 501(c)(4)s and other entities under the guise of not donating to a campaign, trying to create an unfollowable trail via co-mingling of funds.

We don't have a problem with spending tax payer money on foreign aid, but helping to bring affordable healthcare to American citizens really irks some people. We should direct our anger at our politicians and demand they pass a bill reducing all foreign aid by 25% and using that money to fix the problems here, we would all be better.
