Pelosi defends Obamacare claims, can’t predict effect on Dems in midterms

Washington (CNN) – House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday neither she nor President Barack Obama misled the American people when they said, during the run-up to the passage of Obamacare, that people could keep their health insurance plans.

Pelosi clarified their remarks, saying they only meant people could keep their plans if they had already signed up before Obama signed the bill in 2010.

"(Obama is) gracious and he's taking responsibility,” Pelosi said on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “But that doesn't mean there's anything in the law that said if you like what you had before 2010, you couldn't keep it."

The Affordable Care Act allows for people to keep their health plans if they had signed up before the bill was enacted - but not after.

Fact Check: If you liked your health plan, you can keep your health plan

The president repeatedly said during the campaign for health care reform that if people liked their insurance plans they could keep them.

Following many health plan cancellation notices – a million in California alone – Obama told the American people Thursday he’s responsible for not having been clear.

“I completely get how upsetting this can be for a lot of Americans, particularly after assurances they heard from me that if they had a plan that they liked, they could keep it. And to those Americans, I hear you loud and clear,” Obama said.

The President offered a short-term fix, allowing people who have had plans canceled to remain on them for an additional year.

On Friday, the House passed a bill, with bipartisan support, allowing people to stay on their plans permanently. It’s unclear whether that bill will have a chance to move forward or if Obama might even veto it if it passed in the Senate.

The fumbling – Obama’s word - rollout of Obamacare may take a toll on Democratic prospects in next year’s midterm elections, even though the party came out on top in opinion polls following a government shutdown last month. That shutdown now seems like a distant memory.

"I don't think you can tell what will happen next year, but I will tell you this: Democrats stand tall in support of the Affordable Care Act,” Pelosi said.

“What's important about it is that the American people get served, not who gets re-elected.”

I watched the affordable care act drama from beginning to end from 2009 to 2010.
Democrats wanted to pass one health care reform bill that is it. They didn’t do the proper research and the copied the bill from Romney care and Heritage foundation proposal

    Let democrats pay some fine

This woman Nancy Pelosi is quite smart in her head. She is right. Why should people re-elect those who didn't do the job they were elected for? If people will think so deeply on this, as they have already done by rating them at 9% of the job they are doing, does it really make any sense to re-elect them even if one issue – Obamacare fails completely? There are still many outstanding issues which are as important as Obamacare is, and those elected and need to be re-elected, don't bother at all to tackle them.

Get ready for another Ted Cruz / Mike Lee Green Eggs and Ham government shutdown .

Why is it so difficult for America to have Affordable Healthcare , did Canada , Germany , England have this kind of opposition during the implication of there healthcare system ?

No , because they would never allow big healthcare providers , big insurance corporations and big pharmaceutical companies to call the shots.

    All things are relative.

First, the ACA rollout-while flawed continues to enroll thousands of Americans into health care insurance plans- many for the first time, or for the first time in years. Yes, things may not have gone as planned, but for the vast majority, their existing policies are unaffected and for more, they now have coverage against illness and bankruptcy- something the GOP clearly is against.

Second, the GOP is whistling past the graveyard here. Americans may rightly be angry about the ACA rollout and needs to hold Democrats accountable, but really what about the GOP? First and most obvious- they have no health care plan- so one must assume they like the "system" (as they call it) that kills 48,000 a year, and is the leading cause of bankruptcy in our nation.More significantly, the GOP has their government shutdown that put a million federal workers and contractors into forced unemployment; crushed local tourism around U.S. National Parks and monuments; and cost the nation $24 billion. Add to that the House GOP then voting for the U.S. to default on it's financial obligations- those they refuse to fund through the normal budget process. This from so-called "fiscal conservatives".

No sir, the GOP tried to blackmail the President and hold the nation hostage so they could keep Americans from the dream of affordable health care insurance. When that radical gambit failed, they then voted to crash the economy (again). For many- that is sedition and treason.

One side: badly executed federal policy, the other: anti-government, anti-American lunacy. I know who I'm not voting for, ever again!

That's really funny coming from the side of the aisle that claims Michelle Bachmann, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin, Mike Lee and a whole host of lunatic radicals as their best and brightest. At least Ms. Pelosi is working for average Americans- the GOP? Not so much.

Free people are born as free individuals owing nothing to anyone.
Free people have the Natural Right to do whatever they choose to do for their own benefit.
Free people have the Right to think and speak, and act in any way they choose that does not prevent another from doing the same.
Free people have the right to live how they want and be friends or lovers with whoever they choose.
Free people have the right to their identity, to share their private information with only those they choose.
Free people have the right to choose who they will care for and all others deserve nothing that they own.
Free people have the right to choose how they live and how they will die.

All of these are Natural Rights. No one, and No Government, gives these rights to us. We will never stop resisting with Civil Disobedience to all those that try to take them away.

it is called doubling down on the obamacare lies. what else can they do? lying and deceit are the democrats staple. now all of america knows the democrats and obama are nothing but pathological lairs.

and the midterm elections? only the democrats from the democrat gerrymandered districts will be safe. the nine red state democrat senators are toast as are all the democrat reps in competitive districts. 2010 will look like a walk in the park compared to what awaits them in 2014 after this massive fraud on the american people.

Obama & Pelosi LIE to the American people, and the wingnut lefties not only condone but support this behavior all in the name of the "greater good". If done in the name of progressive progress, they are for it; if done in the name of personal responsibility or on constitutional grounds they are against it. Sad. Nanny state thinking is dictatorship under the guise of making things "better". "Do it MY way, because I know what is best for YOU", is the mantra of the wingnut left.

The 39 dems who voted with the repubs are probably like Georgia's Representative Barrow. His rural South Georgia district is red as can be, and if he is 'toast', there will be a repub in his seat in 2014.

I'm sure Pres. Obama would rather have 39 dems vote with the repubs on this symbolic vote, with little or no chance of passage into law, than have most of those seats go repub next election.

Pelosi is pathetic. She passed it so she could read it. She probably should have read it first so she, Obama and the rest of the Democrats wouldn't have lied repeatedly to the American people.

Keep on ranting about what went wrong, Republicans, but don't lift a hand to help correct the mistakes. Keep on claiming to be the ones who are looking out for our best interests, while closing down the Government, refusing to pass the Jobs Bill, and Immigration Bill, and others. Keep on blaming our President for lying, when you've done nothing but lie since our President took office in 2009. Keep on .. do nothing. You .. Republicans in Congress, will join the less fortunate Republicans who lost in 2012. We will help you.

The only reason this story isn't bigger is that the employer mandate was held off for a year. Once this part of the law is enforced get ready for an even larger back lash. Of course that's the plan. They want to force everyone into a fed plan then they can change it over to 'Single Payer'

Don't just look at wants in front of your eyes, but look what's been said, done and is happening to know what will happen.
