Senate approves bill to improve safety of compounded drugs

Washington (CNN) - The Senate Monday approved a bill to give the Food and Drug Administration oversight of large compounding pharmacies to insure they meet the agency's strict safety standards.

The legislation grew out of a deadly outbreak of meningitis last year at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The measure, which already passed the House, was approved on a voice vote in the Senate. The president is expected to sign the bill sometime this year.

The legislation is aimed at facilities that make large volumes of compounded drugs as opposed to small local pharmacies that compound drugs for individual prescriptions. The measure includes new federal standards for tracking and tracing the materials used in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

"The 751 patients who were sickened by contaminated injections sold by NECC, and the families of the 64 who died, have lived a nightmare over this past year," said Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, last week about the bill he helped write. "The medicine that was supposed to help them made them gravely ill or, in far too many cases, took their lives."

Compounding pharmacists customize medications to fit an individual's needs. Doctors will prescribe these custom medications when the manufactured drug won't work.

I hope that the House doesn't out right reject it like it has with so many other things like immigration reform.

But but, Congress doesn't do anything....more proof of the lies liberals like to spread! Maybe if people actually do some research themselves they will see that they do, it just might not be bills that THEY like!

Wait, you mean the magical "free market" didn't result in 100% safety of all pharmaceuticals based on fear of consumer backlash? The profit motive led to careless practices and cutting corners to avoid expense? Say it isn't so!!!! Whatever are we going to do if industries actually require regulating in order to prevent deaths and maimings and bankruptcies and what-not? Oh lawdy lawdy....someone tell me this is just a bad dream and the "free market" will still run by rainbow unicorns that fart economic pixie dust when I awaken!!!!

I love it. When are these idiots going to realize that a regulated economy is one that will give them stable economic growth and soften the blows when things head south? I guess none of them have ever read Adam Smith's " Wealth of Nations", but you can be certain they have read " Atlas Shrugged" and loved it. The FDA keeps them from being poisoned by con artists like Kevin Trudeau, who traffic in rumors and make money off the weak-minded. The whole rugged individualism myth is just that, a myth. That certainly explains their belief in pixie dust.

" they will see that they do, it just might not be bills that THEY like!"

they will see that the House GOP/Teatrolls do enact some legislation, it just isn't bills that are designed to help the economy and create jobs while a Dem is POTUS

"GOPTP will kill it citing too much government regulation."

Nah. The House already passed it. One of the more nutjobby GOP/Teatroll Senators may try to amend it with something that deliberately damages the ACA though...and then start squawking that the Dems don't want to help people who take compound medications when they refuse to pass his amendment.

"The whole rugged individualism myth is just that, a myth. "

You mean there's a reason human beings collected in groups, built communities in small areas together, enacted rules and laws, and put walls around their communities when settling this country? The pilgrims weren't just one dude and his obedient wife who built it all and then started reproducing to populate the nation? This is some heavy stuff here...I thought we could essentially all be separate little nations unto ourselves, just passing in the night when convenient, and only relying on others if we want to, but never ever needing to because herpa derpa individualism and personal responsibility. Did nobody even think of this when they started writing all those crazy rules and creating that weird government thing in the Constitution? Sure would've saved all sorts of time and frustration if those founding fathers guys had just realized we don't need any of that structured silliness. All we need is a gun and a rake and poof, civilization.
