Obama approval rating sinks to new low in CNN poll

Washington (CNN) - As President Barack Obama's approval rating hits another all-time low, a new national survey also indicates that Americans say the President has less power than congressional Republicans when it comes to shaping events over the next year.

According to a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, 41% of Americans approve of the job the President's doing in the White House, the lowest level for that crucial indicator in CNN polling. Fifty-six percent questioned say they disapprove of Obama's performance, an all-time high in CNN surveys.

The President's approval rating has now reached new lows or tied his all-time lows in polls released over the past three weeks from CNN/ORC, CBS News, ABC News/Washington Post, Quinnipiac University, National Journal Heartland Monitor, and NBC News/Wall Street Journal. And the CNN survey is the fourth non-partisan live operator national poll released this week to put Obama's approval rating between 40% and 42%. A CBS News survey released Wednesday showed the President's approval rating at 37%.

Geography appears to play a role in the President's falling numbers.

"The drop in Obama's approval rating comes entirely among suburbanites," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Compared to the October CNN poll, positive views of Obama held steady among people who live in big cities and rural areas. But in the suburbs, his approval rating was 45% a month ago but has dropped to just 37% now."

The President's overall job approval rating is down three points since mid-October after being stuck in the mid-40s for several months in CNN polling. But it's worth noting that Obama's woes did not begin with the disastrous launch of the website in October, Holland pointed out.

"The real damage came in June, when reports about NSA spying and IRS treatment of conservative groups caused an eight-point drop in his approval rating - a far more significant change than what the numbers from October suggest," he said.

Who should shape Washington?

Fifty percent believe that congressional Republicans will have more influence over the direction the nation takes in the next year while only 42% saying the President will have more influence, according to the poll. That's a change from November 2012, when more six in ten said Obama would have more influence in the year to come.

Who should have more influence is a different story.

The poll shows 47% want Obama to be in charge while 45% say the GOP should have more influence over the country.

"There is a hint of good news for the President - but only a hint - in those numbers, since that means that the number of Americans who support Obama in his struggles with the GOP is a bit higher than the 41% approval rating would suggest. But that number is also a step down in Obama's support, representing a four-point decline since the last time the question was asked just after Obama won re-election last year," Holland said.

The poll was conducted Nov. 18-20 for CNN by ORC International, with 843 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

"Then they get hysterical, start giggling like little girls,, – but they never give any examples."

Examples: Fox lies about ... just about everything... EXAMPLE: Calling Obamacare socialized medicine. Blaming Obama constantly for security at Benghazi when its not even the presidents responsibility to manage security at embassies.

It's not that they bold faced lie to peoples faces... its that everything they say is layered without regard for any evidence to back it up.

I've always hated Obama. The rest of you are just getting your wake up call. Thanks for the two terms of unadulterated anti-American socialism.

At this point I am surprised anyone is ignorant enough to defend Obama but reading the comments I see there are a few. Slow learners I guess.

It is amazing to me ,the bias in the mainstream media , no more filibuster ! Black gang's jumping and knocking out white people ! No headline's from the main stream media . We are in a lot of trouble , when you can't tell the american people the truth , nothing but spin for the press and the president . Too much anger is being put out there and there will be a day when the american people wake up and it is not going to be pretty . What are the democrats going to do when the republicans are in charge and pass every bill they don't like ! Cry and say what racist we are . Are you sick of this as much as I am ? Everyone need's to reset and think about what the hell we are doing to our great nation . That means all of us together ! What about our children ! Our ability to help the world from nasty dictator's and tyrants ! This president is killing us period , I wish it were different . I am just one man and parent worried for all of us . Is there a republican or democrat out there that is worthy of this job anymore .

@ The REAL should delete any "facts" you have relating to the military. they are all wrong, but nice try. for example, the F-22 was just fielded several years ago and is so new it has not even flown a combat mission. Production was stopped in favor of the F-35 which is many years over schedule and billions over budget. nice try Gitmo too. i have friends deployed there. its not in "reduce" mode.

Imagine what that number would look like if their sample didn't have nearly 35% more Democrats than Republicans in it.

And yet republicans approval rating is LOWER. Republicans are running for re-election with a 9% approval rating, Obama is NOT running for re-election

When the "Communist New Channel" and the other main-street-media propaganda machines publish poll results the show the buffoon's approval rate in the low 40's you can bet the real number is probably around 20%, at best.

That's why Reid pulled his "nuclear option" today. Had to get it in while he still can. He was probably put up to it by Obama so he could all of his appointments in while he still had a chance.

With the Democrat Senate using the Nuclear option perhaps they should say fair is fair, we abused or power and so can the Republican House House. Meaning the House passes no budget until Obama resigns or signs a bill he don't like as he will be the direct cause of a full scale government shut down!

This guy was never fit to be president, but he fooled me into voting for him. Sweet talker, and that's it. He has no clue how to do this job and he's surrounded himself by more clueless folks.

The person writing this article must be a Republican. It stinks. All the Republicans did in the last five years is go against the President at every angle. Instead of thinking and working for the American people, all they did was obstruct the process.
