Obama approval rating sinks to new low in CNN poll

Washington (CNN) - As President Barack Obama's approval rating hits another all-time low, a new national survey also indicates that Americans say the President has less power than congressional Republicans when it comes to shaping events over the next year.

According to a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, 41% of Americans approve of the job the President's doing in the White House, the lowest level for that crucial indicator in CNN polling. Fifty-six percent questioned say they disapprove of Obama's performance, an all-time high in CNN surveys.

The President's approval rating has now reached new lows or tied his all-time lows in polls released over the past three weeks from CNN/ORC, CBS News, ABC News/Washington Post, Quinnipiac University, National Journal Heartland Monitor, and NBC News/Wall Street Journal. And the CNN survey is the fourth non-partisan live operator national poll released this week to put Obama's approval rating between 40% and 42%. A CBS News survey released Wednesday showed the President's approval rating at 37%.

Geography appears to play a role in the President's falling numbers.

"The drop in Obama's approval rating comes entirely among suburbanites," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Compared to the October CNN poll, positive views of Obama held steady among people who live in big cities and rural areas. But in the suburbs, his approval rating was 45% a month ago but has dropped to just 37% now."

The President's overall job approval rating is down three points since mid-October after being stuck in the mid-40s for several months in CNN polling. But it's worth noting that Obama's woes did not begin with the disastrous launch of the website in October, Holland pointed out.

"The real damage came in June, when reports about NSA spying and IRS treatment of conservative groups caused an eight-point drop in his approval rating - a far more significant change than what the numbers from October suggest," he said.

Who should shape Washington?

Fifty percent believe that congressional Republicans will have more influence over the direction the nation takes in the next year while only 42% saying the President will have more influence, according to the poll. That's a change from November 2012, when more six in ten said Obama would have more influence in the year to come.

Who should have more influence is a different story.

The poll shows 47% want Obama to be in charge while 45% say the GOP should have more influence over the country.

"There is a hint of good news for the President - but only a hint - in those numbers, since that means that the number of Americans who support Obama in his struggles with the GOP is a bit higher than the 41% approval rating would suggest. But that number is also a step down in Obama's support, representing a four-point decline since the last time the question was asked just after Obama won re-election last year," Holland said.

The poll was conducted Nov. 18-20 for CNN by ORC International, with 843 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Anonymous: "CNN has him at 41%? BS! Leave it to the lib media. His approval rating is at least 10 points less"

OK, then why is he at 40% in the new Fox poll?

Maybe Fox is a "lib" organization, too, eh? 🙂

President Obama is doing just fine in my opinion and in the opinion of most Americans who want good health benefits in their health insurance policies. I thank God every night that President Obama is in office and that the right wing wackos did not win the election to continue to do everything for the one percent and only the one percent. They are also the ones who will start a war if they can. They will end Social Security and Medicare and privatize everything else in sight. So just as long as President Obama is doing his job I am happy.

The republicans are to blame , they have no plan except to stop Obama . Their plan is working but soon it will backfire big time in their face . ACA will gain traction and the American People will win again. Just remember what happened when these clowns were in power last time , compare what is going on now to that . I'll take Obama anyway.

Maybe you all should start listening to the people [yes, people...all races, all political affiliations...a fact largely ignored by liberal progressives] call 'baggers' because they know better than you!!!!'

Once the healthcare website mess is straightened out, his ratings will go back up. The Repugs attack him 27-7 for the last 6 years; it was bound to have an effect sooner or later. When he attacks back, that is when his ratings go up. The nuclear option will help him; not hurt him.

    The REAL Truth...

@Sue01 – no disgusting behavior like that awful slime POS Bashir on CNN's sister station MSNBC,
wow.. just dumb founding!!!! DId you even watch the intervierw?? Cruz had no response to ACA other than his usual myopic kill it! NO alternatives, NO suggestions, and NO defense for his actions. It's called investigative journalism, and if any behavior was disgusting it was the denigrating replies that Cruz gave to Bashir.
I did watch the ENTIRE interview and at the end Cruz did provide examples of how to have healthcare reform. You see, you morons on the left go completely deaf as soon as people start talking about individual responsibility and the free market. If it doesn't have the words government run in it, then it's not an option for you. The ideas that Cruz talked about where brought up in the House when this current disaster was taking shape. The problem was the true obstructionists (Pelosi, Reid) would not let any of the repub proposals make it to the house floor and Reid wasn't going to bring them to the floor on the senate even if they did pass the house. Their proposals were published on the site, yet you mindless libs won't acknowledge it because the ideas don't include government handouts.

I truly feel sorry for the hapless souls here that still believe in Obama. He is our first hard-core Marxist leader and he has done considerable damage to us and our allies- the former ones, not the current ones like Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood. If you haven't yet witnessed enough of his misdeeds to cast doubt your way, just wait. The walls of intimidation are beginning to crack and breach. I predict that very soon there will be an onslaught of whistle blowers who this guy has thrown under the bus and patriots who have been intimidated into quiet who will come forth and further expose this fraud. His former secret service agent and people over at census are just the beginning. The presses will be cranking tell-alls on overtime before he leaves office.

Fester, Fester, goodness...yes, some people, maybe 2 % wanted him to fail...the other 98% accepted that he won [fair or not] the election and HOPED he was up to the job. THEN came so many things that have literally changed their minds about how they view this prez...Fast & Furious, Solyndra, Benghazi, ACA...all of these issues are covered in lies and cover-ups...and they think the American public doesn't see that...well, think again...this is WHY you're disapproval rating is nearly 60%. Time for some real hope and change. IMPEACH him NOW!!!

The fact Democrats are still punishing AND blaming Republicans for problems in this country is sickening. The only reason Republicans choose to steer clear of Democrat policies and processes is because of their failure rate. The direction that the Obama administration has steered this nation over the past 5-6 years has been "change" of the worst kind. He should be removed from office ASAP.
