(CNN) – Fifty years after President Kennedy’s assassination, numerous polls indicate that most Americans now believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted as part of a broader plot or conspiracy.
But a new CNN/ORC poll released Friday shows little consensus on exactly who was behind an alleged wider plot to murder Kennedy.
Poll respondents were asked whether they believe the CIA, the Mafia, Cuba, the Soviet Union and/or then-Vice President Lyndon Johnson were involved.
The top suspects, in the minds of the American public, are the CIA and the Mafia.
One-third of all Americans believe the CIA was part of a plot to kill JFK. Thirty percent believe the Mafia was somehow involved.
Cold War enemies Cuba and the Soviet Union aren’t suspected quite as much. Twenty-two percent of Americans believe Moscow was somehow involved, while 20% point the finger at Fidel Castro’s regime in Havana.
As for LBJ, twenty-one percent of Americans believe Kennedy’s vice president – and successor – played a role in his death.
The bottom line appears to be that no one - least of all the American public – knows exactly who, if anyone, besides Oswald was responsible for Kennedy's death.
But 50 years later, there is plenty of suspicion to go around.
The CNN/ORC survey was conducted by telephone from November 18-20 among 843 adult Americans. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5%.
