Obama tells entertainment bosses they have responsibility in gun debate

Updated 4:31 p.m. ET, 11/26/2013

Glendale, California (CNN) - President Barack Obama encouraged the leaders of America's movie and television studios Tuesday to portray gun violence in a way that doesn't encourage people to carry out crimes in real life.

Speaking at DreamWorks Animation's campus in Glendale, the President said entertainment decision-makers have a "responsibility" when it comes to on-screen violence.

"We've got to make sure that we're not glorifying it because the stories you tell shape our children's outlook and their lives," Obama said.

Nearly a year ago, the President vowed action on stemming gun violence in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Connecticut. While he signed more than a dozen executive actions on guns, legislation failed to garner enough votes in Congress to become law. In particular, a measure that would have required universal background checks on gun sales - which was considered the most likely to receive enough support among lawmakers - failed to pass the Senate.

Entertainment executives were included in a task forced chaired by Vice President Joe Biden that looked at ways to curb gun violence, and Obama said Tuesday "those conversations will continue."

"The stories we tell matter. And you tell stories more powerfully than anybody else on the earth," Obama said.

He's just saying what the teleprompters are telling him, leave him alone before he has to get angry and blame everyone else besides himself.

This nation desperately needs total Gun-Ban Law. Period, don't talk of second amendment, third amendment bs. USA needs gun-ban laws. Period.

Gurgylk, if you really feel this way, I want you to think about two points for a second. One, do you honestly think that if you ban all firearms, that criminals will turn them in because they are now "illegal" to own? You do understand what the term criminal implies, correct? It is someone who does not obey the existing laws we have.

Second, The United States Supreme Court has ruled in 8 or 9 different cases, that it is not the responsibility of the police to protect us private citizens. Let me repeat that for you, IT IS NOT THE JOB OF THE POLICE TO PROTECT US. The job of the police is law enforcement, not crime prevention. So if it is not the job of the police to protect us, that means it is your responsibility to. Here are a few examples of where the police were not around to protect us citizens, the Navy Yard shooting in DC, no police around. The Newton School shooting, no police around. The Colorado theater shooting, no police around. Columbine, no police around. Oh ya, and all these incidents happened in a gun free zone. So do gun free zones really work? You should ask all the families of those individuals who have died in the above incidents how safe their loved ones were in these gun free zones.

Oh ya, PS The third amendment states that soldiers are not allowed to be housed in citizens houses. But I bet you knew that, didn't you.

@Jack 2 "All while Obama pushes the glorification of gays"

That's right! If we were a God fearing Christian country we could just stone them.
Have you considered moving to a country more your liking, Iran perhaps?

Drone killings, on the other hand, should be glorified at every politically-relevant moment.

I think you all gun rights advocates need to step back a step and realize if you do not distance yourself from these insane killers and agree to some sensible gun laws you are going to find yourself in a position where some severe restricitons are being imposed. I am a responsible gun owner, but I am NOT going to defend these murderers and draw some line in the sand to protect the rights of some child killers, nor am I going to back some idiot like George Zimmerman who is an obvious liar and whose idea of problem solving is to pull his gun out and wave it at people every time he doesn't get his way. To continue to support and defend these people will be your downfall and will cost you more in the way of rights than had you been sensible and adult about attemtpting to control some of this violence.
And as for the lady (man/whatever) above who posted Obama has made attempts to take guns away.... try reading the record. Obama has signed legislation to expand gun rights (now have right to carry in Federal Parks), but he has signed no legislation to restrict (and certainly not ban) any gun rights.

Do this nation and yourself a favor and leave. If you don't respect the bill of rights leave. Everyone wins

Well it's about time!! Thanks for being real, Mr. President; if you want to get rid of modeling bad behavior, start at the root.

It wasn't that long ago, when what is shown on TV, and in the movies, and the first person shooter games that are so popular was brought up by the NRA and others as a potential cause of the rise of gun violence in America. And the administration and others flushed it down the loo. Quickly, I might add. So now Obama thinks the entertainment industry does have a role to play. But his language was not strong enough. The lines between good and evil are no longer black and white, but have become murky gray.

Why doesn't Obama ask rappers not to glorify violence? Has he not seen any rap videos?

If you have read some of the past posts here by liberals, some of them have suggested that U.S. citizens cannot defy the Obama regime with their hand held weapons. Rather, any opposition will face drone attacks, etc. What does that tell us about the current state of affairs in the United States? The fact that THEY brought this up demonstrates how far this regime of B arry So etoro has divided this country! I thought that liberals were all warm and fuzzy peace loving folks...

The guy who spent the last half decade blaming Bush for everything he did wrong has a lot of nerve talking about other people taking responsibility for things.

Thanks Mr. President but money is the root of all evil and as long as they continue to have people pay to watch that kind of violence, it will continue.
    Thanks for trying.

I remember when a group from the entertainment business spoke out against the preemptive war based on botched intell in Iraq. What a disaster!! It guess it doesn't matter if what they say is right or wrong, so long as it repeats the governments message.

When a president instructs the media and entertainment industry how to shape the narrative, that's called propaganda (which is the signature of a dictator). Also, everything this fool says is "for the benefit of our kids"... after all, who doesn't love their kids. Hitler wrapped his agenda around "for the good of kids", as well...
