CNN/ORC Poll: Jump in percentage of those saying things not going well

Washington (CNN) - Americans views on the state of the nation are turning increasingly sour, according to a new national poll.

And a CNN/ORC International survey released Friday also indicates that less than a quarter of the public says that economic conditions are improving, while nearly four in ten say the nation's economy is getting worse.

Forty-one percent of those questioned in the poll say things are going well in the country today, down nine percentage points from April, and the lowest that number has been in CNN polling since February 2012. Fifty-nine percent say things are going badly, up nine points from April.

Besides an obvious partisan divide, which contributes to a urban-rural gap, the survey also indicates a difference of opinion between younger and older Americans.

"There's a slight generational divide, with 46% of those under age 50 saying things are going well. That number drops to 36% for those 50 and older," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Looking specifically at the economy, 39% feel that the economy is still in a downturn, up six points from April. Only 24% believe that an economic recovery is under way. Thirty-six percent are in the middle - they don't think we're in a recovery but they believe conditions have stabilized.

Again, the survey indicates partisan and geographic divides, as well as a generational gap, with 45% of those age 50 and older, but only 34% of those under age 50 saying the economy's still in a downturn.

The poll was conducted November 18-20 for CNN by ORC International, with 843 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

CNN Political Editor Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

The only way to move forward is to vote out every democrat in 2014. America needs leaders not losers! 8 years of damage to America's Conservative core values will be the death blow to the democratic party.

At the same time in their presidencies, both having inherited poor economies, President Reagan's pro-growth, free market policies were producing more than 7% GDP growth.....obama's central planning, redistribution policies an anemic 2% pumped up with monthly bond purchases. You can give excuses....I'll take the numbers.

One sixth of our population is uninsured, and the right wingnuts are upset that fixing health care is affecting one sixth of our economy. 38% of the Bush tax cuts went to 1% of out population. You begin to see why republican economics brought us our first Great Depression, and the Great Recession of 2008

You can find a few economists who openly say that the long term is more important, but most unfortunately say the short term is more important, and this in turn is because their paychecks often come from federally funded research grants or they teach where the federal grants and guaranteed loans flow. This in turn assists in guiding us to ruin as the government monetizes the debt, making it appear that things are doing well to a certain number of people for just long enough for politicians to retire from office. It will come crashing down, folks.

The Liberals are out in full force today. But to those of us that are much more centrally aligned politically, the humor in their comments is both predictable and yet, a very sad statement that supports how ignorant our electorate really is. But the article promotes this, with every obvious point of negative public opinion, a comment follows that it must be a politically motivated breakdown that has caused the negative responses! Of course, when polls showed the reverse numbers, there was nary a mention that those polls too fell along political ideological lines.

Those that like to reference Fox News (which I don't like or watch) as being unreliable and wrong because it has a conservative slant, wake up. The channels and media sources you like do the exact same thing – they just slant their "news" (in reality opinions) in the direction you like (to the left). Media sources like CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, etc. . .

We no longer have any news media in this country, we have entertainment media that directs their "news", or more accurately opinion pieces towards the bent beliefs of their viewership. The dumbing down of American is 100% evident by both this article and its excuses (political based) for such lousy polling numbers, and also by evidence in the blind (nice word for ignorant) posters comments herein.

People are really stuck on stupid in hear. Multiple times I've seen people claim: "Conservatives have stopped jobs bills in Congress.."

In actuality, Harry Reid in the Senate has killed more bills than any other single person in Congress. He's a Democrat. People are living on Fantasy Island.

I see comments blaming comments on everything from fox news to trolls. Then why are there ads running on TV in the heartland of America telling people not to be to proud to go ask for assistance in feeding their families. I could go on and on,but some of you have your eyes wide shut.

The only thing that's going to trickle down on you is pee from the rich running down the back of your neck. America starves and Veterans live in the parks and die without treatment for their wounds and Obama appoints Gay Ambassadors to the Dominican Republic, etc. Is America going the right way? If you call the Highway to Hell right; it's on the Freeway.

have to agree with Koffend. The people of this country are becoming dumber by the day. It truly is scary. Facts are not something to be bothered with any more bay liberals. It messes up their argument.

Welcome to the new America. Factory jobs have been run out of the country and we are now a service industry that produces nothing but debt. If you think it's bad now just wait until these untold trillions of dollars we have printed and sitting in vaults around the world hit the market. It is coming soon as the world loses confidence in the US being able to sustain it's debt load.

Where does CNN get these numbers? Every poll shows 65 to 71 % of the people saying the country is going in the wrong direction under Obama yet CNN says 41 % think the country is OK? WOW! Obama with 37 % approval and CNN claiming he has 41%. Does CNN work for Obama? The answer seems to be a resounding YES!

Everybody blaming the other side for what's happening in America .. that everything is going to pot because of our President .. that the Republicans are too blame for not doing anything progressive .. that Democrats are too blame for the state of America.
Well... from what I'm seeing on t.v .. of the millions of people pushing and shoving to buy t.vs and blue ray players and electronic games ... all not really necessary in our daily lives of having nothing, and hunger .... well, the picture doesn't say much for what everyone is saying. As for my husband and me, we have much more money being paid to us in the stock market, our government is totally reliable sending us our Social Security check each month, the place where my husband worked for more than 30 years, is faithful in their promises .. we don't lack for anything we need .. and if I want to go buy a t.v set tomorrow, the money is there. The main problem, I think, is that people have never learned how to manage their money, and want to blame somebody else for their lack of know-how.
As for the unfortunate ones who have very little, despite their hard work and diligence, and despite the misfortune of being handicapped or sick or unwell enough not to be able to work .. we all should stop bickering and help those people. I bet they don't have computers to fuss and complain on.

The Reblicans have not been in charge of the economy since 2007. This anemic growth rate is 100% owned by those currently in charge. When the stock market bubble Bursts next time, you will actually get to see a depression. We are sitting at 1929 all over again, I am scared to death of what 2014 has to bring. Anybody who believes these multinational companies are turning record profits need to understand how Enronesque accounting works, they are fluffing heavily trying to buy time till real profits improve, I have seen this before.

Aside from all the people proclaiming that one political party is better than the other (which is like saying that rotten apples are better than rotten apples), I actually remember what things were like back in 2008-2010 and I think that the nation is doing way better now than it was then. Anyone that says otherwise must not have had to live through 2008-2010. I do not give credit to any political party for this because everything bad that has happened was due to politicians, all of them, imo. I give credit to the hard working USA citizens that want to do better for the country. I wonder what would happen if everyone decided to work harder for the country instead of for their political party.
