Obama does some 'Small Business Saturday' shopping

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama continued what's become an annual post-Thanksgiving tradition by stopping at a bookstore for Small Business Saturday.

With his two daughters alongside, the President went to Politics and Prose in Washington to pick up a few books, telling reporters he bought a "long list" of titles for every age group, including his own. (Read the full list below)

The President chatted at length with several customers, while his daughters, Sasha and Malia, browsed.

He went to the cashier to make his purchase after about 20 minutes. As he left the shop, the President wished everyone a "great holiday," and customers applauded.

Started by two people in 1984, Politics and Prose has grown to a staff of 50 employees and is known as a popular spot for book discussions and readings, with daily visits by authors.

First lady Michelle Obama, who was not with the family Saturday, held a book signing at Politics and Prose in May to promote “American Grown,” a book about the White House garden and her campaign against obesity.

Last year, the Obamas shopped at a different bookstore - One More Page Books - in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia.

Small Business Saturday is a tradition started by American Express in 2010.

In 2011, they went to Kramerbooks and Afterwords Café in Washington.

List of books purchased by Obama, according to the White House:

“Half Brother” by Kenneth Oppel
“Heart of a Samurai” by Margi Preus
“Flora and Ulysses” by Kate DiCamillo
“Jinx” by Sage Blackwood
“Lulu and the Brontosaurus” by Judith Viorst and Lane Smith
“Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” by Chris Riddell
“Moonday” by Adam Rex
“Journey” by Aaron Becker
“The Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri
“Red Sparrow” by Jason Matthews
“Harold and the Purple Crayon” by Crockett Johnson
“A Constellation of Vital Phenomena” by Anthony Marra
“The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance” by David Epstein
“Collision Low Crossers: A Year Inside the Turbulent World of NFL Football” by Nicholas Dawidoff
“Ballad of the Sad Cafe: And Other Stories” by Carson McCullers
“My Antonia” by Willa Cather
“Ragtime” By E.L. Doctorow
“The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
“Buddha in the Attic” by Julie Otsuka
“All That Is” by James Salter
“Wild: From Lost to Found On the Pacific Crest Trail” by Cheryl Strayed

Obama also encouraged Americans to take part in Small Business Saturday via Twitter on Saturday.

Attorney General Eric Holder, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and other members of the President's Cabinet also promoted shopping at locally-owned stores. The Small Business Administration's chief post, a Cabinet-level position, is currently held by an acting administrator.

A number of Republican lawmakers on Captiol Hill also urged followers to take part in the relatively new tradition.

I was reading the Wisconsin State Journal on line, and noticed that Gov. Walker's website for veteran's drivers licenses is not functioning properly. It appears that Walker should be impeached for not being able to create a website that can handle 300 hits a day. That might also explain his unwillingness to set up a healthcare exchange.

Some times it is not popular with the Ayn Rand, I got mine group, to do the right thing for all Americans, but we are fortunate to have a president who stands up for all of us. Health care is something sought after for 100 years, and the man from Illinois did it. Thank you President Obama.

Law of the Land! However His Majesty has delayed for whomever he chooses. Thankfully he delayed for small businesses. They are going to get killed when their delay runs out.

Nice to see real books being purchased by the Pres. We don't have many bookshops left in our neck of the woods any longer, I reckon many young kids now days scratch their heads in wonderment when they see these bound dinosaurs lining the walls of the local library. Frank

These books ended up costing the taxpayers thousands of dollars each. If someone aspires to and succeeds at becoming the president, they have to live with the physical isolation of being "stuck into" the White House. Of course, they need to leave on certain occasions for official functions. This is just pure fluff – PR – nonsense! I am sure there were hundreds of police and Secret Service running round protecting Obama and his kids all so that he could go to a neighborhood bookstore. If our president was so intent in getting new books, let him buy them at Amazon. Being "one with the people" is an illusion that makes press but just costs this country money better spent elsewhere.

If it wasn't so serious that the GOP has almost destroyed our country, we would be laughing at their ineptness. We need to watch them shut down the government again and default in a few weeks. What a worthless group of misfits the republicans have become.

The only thing amazing about this story is that people are still buying books from bookstore? I thought everyone now buys from Amazon?

Lulu and the Brontosaurus is obviously a socialist manifesto that degrades American family values.

Well, I spent $50 bucks at a local store. Time to strong arm the TPP treaty through and destroy small business and innovation forever.

"Started by two people in 1984, Politics and Prose has grown to a staff of 50 employees..."

I betcha next year either there'll be less than 50 employees or those employees will be working less than 30 hrs/wk.

It is great that the President is bringing attention to "small Business Saturday". Hopefully people will remember these small businesses throughout the year. We also need to focus on RAISING the minimum wage to $11.00 a hour. Why? Because there are too many Americans working part-time and FULL time that require government assistance in order to survive. The raising of the minimum wage will DECREASE the American deficit and actually spur economic growth. I am not speaking as a liberal or conservative, just looking at the economics. Why should people working FULL TIME in some of most successful companies in the world require government SNAP assistance? The Republican Party is always saying the growth in the amount of SNAP assistance is out of control. Maybe if we got the 100’s of thousands of WORKING Americans off the rolls through a “LIVING WAGE” there would be a significant reduction in its costs to the American tax payer. This is long over due…..
