(CNN) - Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will help ring in the new year by pressing the ceremonial button to lower the famous Times Square New Year's Eve Ball on Tuesday.
She's also set to lead the final 60 second countdown, according to the co-organizers of the event, Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment.
A native New Yorker, Sotomayor was appointed to the high court in 2009, and she was the third woman and first Hispanic to become a Supreme Court justice.
"Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014," Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins said in a news release Sunday. "Who better to join us in the Crossroads of the World than one of New York's own?"
All the Dems just want to be celebs..........like the rest of their brethren in Hollywood.
The Supreme's aren't celebrities. They are the "star chamber" of our citizens who keep our country on track with the Constitution. To lower her position to that of a Rapper is demeaning to the "founder's" purpose of the High Court. Really sad! But did we expect more??
No, this means it's the year for immigration reform, in some people's judgement.
The "suprmes" are supposed to guide our Legislative and Executive arms through the Constitution. NOT be TV celebraties! The water in the bowl is swirling and it is getting dark!!
Does anybody really care who pushes the button?
i would have thought they would have asked hillary clinton to do it so she could build up the accomplishments section of her resume.
seriously do your jobs because the people will see you replaced
Oh, Rick, live and let live. All Republicans want to be haters, to each his own.
@Rick McDaniel: Most Hollywood celebrities are also CITIZENS, and many are Republican. Way to go, Justice Sotomayor!
