Conservative group spends $2.5 million in new ad campaign

Updated at 12:24 p.m. ET, 1/2/2014

(CNN) - A conservative group is kicking off the midterm election year with a multimillion-dollar ad campaign that targets three Democratic Senators facing tough re-election battles in November.

Americans for Prosperity, which spent $16 million on television ads in the fall, will unleash another round of commercials that hammer the trio of lawmakers for supporting Obamacare.

The ads zero in on Sens. Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, according to a statement released Thursday.

AFP said the commercials will run in major media markets for the next three weeks, and a spokesman said the ads will cost more than $2.5 million.

The 30-second spots focus on what's been dubbed by PolitiFact as the "Lie of the Year": President Barack Obama's broken pledge that people who liked their health insurance plans could keep them under the Affordable Care Act.

Republicans, and some Democrats, criticized the Obama administration after millions began getting policy cancellation notices last fall. Landrieu and Hagan were among those who wanted to find a legislative fix for the problem.

The ads go after the Senators for repeating the President's promise as they tried to sell Obamacare to the public before and after the law passed in 2010 with only Democratic support.

"Tell Senator Shaheen, it's time to be honest," a narrator says in one clip. "Obamacare doesn't work. New Hampshire families deserve better."

Landrieu's campaign said the ad against her takes her comments out of context and "grossly" misleads.

"The fact is Sen. Landrieu has always supported measures to fix and improve the Affordable Care Act," campaign manager Adam Sullivan said in a statement. "She introduced legislation to keep the president's promise, publically pressured the administration until a fix was made and is continuing her work on behalf of Louisianians to fix and improve the law."

The ad buy follows a $600,000 ad campaign in late December that targeted House Democrats over the same issue.

The Obama administration plans to combat negative ads with positive ones that feature stories about those who are benefiting from the new health care law.

Its allies will also join the effort. Organizing for Action, the advocacy group that originated from the President's reelection campaign, released a new web video Wednesday touting some success stories.

These people don't seem to care if people get a reasonable health insurance. It strikes me as these conservatives have failed to provide an alternative to the ACA. I would have liked to have heard what options were to get more people covered by medical insurance. It is one of those things that other industrialized countries and their companies don't have to worry about since there is no need for the companies to factor into the cost of making something; their health care costs.

Man, they really are doubling down on this as their sole winning issue. Risky, in that in 2014 the positive stories will start to emerge more. All signs show that the economy may start to accelerate much more too in this new year. And if the Iran deal turns into an actual peaceful treaty...the ACA is going to start sounding like a pretty desperate battle cry

Americans for Prosperity spent $16 million hoping that Americans don't receive affordable healthcare. The ad buy follows a $600,000 ad campaign in late December.

Almost 17 million dollars lobbying for failure.
True patriots for corporate trickle down disparity.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

Same phony disrespectful theatrics we have witnessed ever since our President was elected. Nothing more, nothing less. Unbelievable. When are folks going to wake up to the fact that Obamacare is for a small % of people having a need that needs filled. Americans for Prosperity is a corporate special interest for the uber rich's gain that benefits ONLY them. Republicans since Obama have lost their minds. Simple math. WASTE is all their good for anymore. Waste of our time, money and this new century.

The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.
The few that it helps is nothing compared to money that the government is going to make off this fiasco.
With that said, the many will pay and the few will take what the government gives them. Who pays for the few? You do!
Who's pay check gets smaller? The many!
Who gets richer? The insurance companies!
Who will take over your health care in the end? The government!
Who has lied to all of us about how great this will be for us? The government!
Who is going to take it in the rear end after all is said and done? YOU ARE! Don't kid your self.

55 Federal tax hikes went into effect yesterday. Welcome to Obamanation. The dope addicts, welfare frauds and corrupt unions who benefit from this and all of the taxes you pay ,while you work hard and accept personal responsibility for your lives, will continue to do nothing while the Obama regime steals your money and gives it to them.

And when anyone who is uninsured gets sick in NC, just have them send their hospital bills to the Kochs, as I am sure they will take care of it. Charles and David have spent over $1 billion to make sure people violate the law, so the Kochs must have an alternative health care plan for Americans that is awesome. In their attempt to destroy government, the Kochs are proof that not all rich people are bright.

I think we all know that those ads are a waste of money. As more and more Americans sign up for the ACA, the more republicans Lose their fight. Look at the sign up in Kentucky, Wow, repubs, you have lost big time on this one

It's actually time for Americans for Prosperity to be honest. They need to list their donors, explain how Americans having health care is hurting billionaires, and provide an idea of what they think would improve our 38th ranking and insure 45 million more people, while stopping the yearly run away premium increases.

In KY, despite the efforts of McConnell and Paul, over 116,000 of KYs 640,000 uninsured have enrolled in the state exchange. In the next few months I think we will see a lot of unhappy people who voted for republican governors, exhibiting GOP remorse.

ACA is a Law. It is benefitting millions of pre-existing condition patients, millions that never had any insurance in their ENTIRE LIFE. Millions of poor that fall under below the poverty level income. Yes, it is hurting billionaires, millionaires, and BCBS that is greedy representative of GOP. Yes, ACA is a Law, SC upheld it. NC is a third world under Pat McRory, vote all GOP idiots out. CNN please publish all comments with no bias.

"Americans for Prosperity, which spent $16 million on television ads in the fall, will unleash another round of commercials that hammer the trio of lawmakers for supporting Obamacare."

Koch funded and Koch approved anti-Obama ads. Now, when do we get to hear what the GOP would replace the ACA with if the billionaire brothers get their way in continuing to buy votes in our southern states and the Senators and Representatives elected by these southern state vote buying billionaires continue to be beholden to the billionaire brothers.

I wonder how much good we could do for americans if we were to take the money spent by all these whiny demagogues and put it towards programs to solve america's competitive nosedive. The solutions they are touting anyway have nothing to do with the economic reality- id wager wed be at a minimum, no worse off than we are already.

Here's a solution for you conservatives since you hate the ACA so much, a republican proposal, which is now law. Pass universal, single-payer healthcare. The democrats stole your idea and ran with it. The only alternative is to take our idea and run with it. A bunch of us on the left don't like the ACA, however, it's better than the status quo.

reasonable health insurance??? Really most of the people on the new exchange are ones that had insurance and were knowingly forced off their selected plans. The only way this works is to destroy the health insurance industry- and get to a government controled health system which is the problem I don't want obama or the progressives making decisions for me EVER! Besides 30 million will still not be insured according to the CBO another lie " All Americans will be Insured"? Nope just another government plan to keep you and I down by extracting or hard earned cash to pay for a welfare system designed to generate votes!

Ah yes – the usual suspects and excuses for Obamacare.....the Republicans were shut out of the negotiations regarding Oamacare – NONE of their ideas were included (remember the school yard taunt "WE won"?). The old "Republicans want to push Granny over the cliff"....that's a good one......progressives, ie liberals, are too full of themselves to admit this is a disaster....either that or they are so dependent on the government....and contriute next to nothing to fund it....that it really isn't a problem for them....

So glad the GOP is doubling down on their attack on the ACA. That will leave the Dems to fix it, make it work and provide health insurance for millions that didn't have it and will forever call it Obamacare, reminding everyone, how the GOP stood against it. It will become the same as Medicare and Social Security, untouchable if you want to win an election.

its funny how repubs always shout about new taxes to pay for obamacare. did they remember their president Bush, putting 2 wars, medicare part D, and tax cuts on the credit card instead of raising taxes to pay for it. did they look at the national debt lately. at least this president is trying to pay for this law and our next generation wont be saddled with more debt.

Healthcare is 16% of GDP, Dutch. 16% of a $17 Trillion GDP is $2.72 Trillion. ANNUALLY. Where would you opine the government get an additional $2.72 Trillion, annually? Mind you, current tax receipts total around $2 Trillion....
