White House: Obama “will not wait for Congress”

Washington (CNN) - Just days from President Obama's State of the Union address, a senior adviser is providing a glimpse into the speech's central themes: "opportunity, action and optimism."

In an e-mail message to supporters, Dan Pfeiffer is rallying supporters ahead of the address this Tuesday, with a glimpse at the President's plans for 2014.

"On Tuesday night, the President will lay out a set of real, concrete, practical proposals to grow the economy, strengthen the middle class and empower all who hope to join it," Pfeiffer said.

Among those proposals, the president will announce new executive actions on "job training and retirement security," a White House official tells CNN.

While he calls the speech "optimistic," it is sure to ruffle some feathers as well, as Pfeiffer makes clear that Obama will push ahead on his agenda with or without congressional consent.

"In this year of action, the President will seek out as many opportunities as possible to work with Congress in a bipartisan way. But when American jobs and livelihoods depend on getting something done, he will not wait for Congress," Pfeiffer said.

The “year of action” has become a common refrain in 2014 from a White House many see as mired in Washington gridlock.

"President Obama has a pen and he has a phone, and he will use them to take executive action and enlist every American... in the project to restore opportunity for all," Pfeiffer said.

The blast e-mail also announced details of the President's upcoming road trip. After the speech, he will travel to Prince George’s County in Maryland, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Nashville to continue to tout his message of economic inequality.

The White House also announced an online question-and-answer session titled the "Virtual Big Block of Cheese Day." In a salute to Andrew Jackson and "The West Wing," White House officials, including Pfeiffer, will answer questions via social media.

  1. The New Obama Dictatorship

Five years of failure and a refusal to work with and compromise with the elected representatives of the American people and now we have a move towards unconstitutional actions, even more so than Obama has already exhibited. We are headed towards a Constitutional crisis by this Hugo Chavez style dictator. If he continues down this path, the American people will support impeachment and empower the Republicans this November to accomplish that.

Obama lies about Obamacare were the last straw and threaten the entire Democrat Party. These moves may result in its total decimation. The far left thinks the American people want them to stage a coup. In November, that will result in the removal of many many Democrats, including this mini-dictator if he continues down this dangerous path.

@StevenA–When you have a congress that does absolutely nothing we better hope somebody, anybody starts telling them what to do. They obviously do no understand their job is to serve the people, not themselves. There appears to be alot that congress does not understand.

Congress has a job!!! It is to present "bills" to the president. Vote on something, pass something, then give it to the president. Then he will or will not sign it into law. Any criticism before then is premature. If we as a nation valued education as much as we like to think we do. More "leaders"would direct funds to allow for growth and innovation into an area that is in decline. Education is as much a part of our infrastructure as bridges, highways and power grids. When we the people instruct our elected officials to do their jobs and put country first....we move away from the stagnation that has us sinking into oblivion.

@gunderson, mcdaniel, name-You guys just might want to check out Wiki and see what a dictatorship really is. Then compare it with fascism and see which of the three parties comes closet to it. If we had a dictatorship you would have all been rounded up by now and placed in a gulag-or more correctly...an asylum.

If Obama usurps the power of my elected Senator and Representative I DEMAND he be impeached. The American people cannot and should not tolerate the blatant disregard for our Constitution. Obama and the Democrats will get a very rude awakening come November.

Yep, your right old (you keep slipping from old to ole) it is hard to believe you've been through 3 world wars. Especially since there have only been two. Do tell, were you at the battle of Little Big Horn also?

Rather than "touting the message of income inequality" our dear leader should focus all his efforts on the existing problems at hand: unemployment rate of at least 7 % for the last 5 years; his "signature " healthcare law being a disaster with millions of people losing their existing healthcare coverage because it does not meet this administrations standards; the IRS` targeting of individuals and organizations who do not adhere to the administrations political views; the investigation into and apprehension of the individuals responsible for the killing of 4 Americans in Benghazi, the illegal gun running program into Mexico, the NSA spying on American citizens. If our dear leader truly cares about America, he should focus and devote all his energy and attention on these issues.

    Dear Comrade Carlos ,
Keep bringing up Benghazi , Fast and Furious and dictator in chief!

Your strategy is working , the cat lady down the street is moving to the far right !
