Huckabee defends comments as Miley Cyrus, Cosmo weigh in

(CNN) - As more female voices are joining the clamor against him, Mike Huckabee is speaking out against critics, who, he says, distorted his comments on women.

"My whole point was that the women I know are intelligent, thoughtful, educated, capable of running things, capable of making big decisions - and they didn’t need the government to hold their hands. They were not victims of their gender," said the former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate.

Huckabee was speaking Saturday on Fox News, where he hosts a talk show.

The controversy began with Huckabee's comments at the Republican National Committee luncheon Thursday, where he attacked Democrats' "War on Women" rhetoric, arguing Republicans do not have a "war on women," but a "war for women - for them to be empowered to be something other than victims of their gender."

He went on to use language that many have questioned.

"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it," he said Thursday.

He defended that idea Saturday - and criticized today's "Twitter culture" for misconstruing his position.

"You cannot reduce thoughtful discussions to 140 characters and carry on what I would call an intellectually responsible conversation," he said.

"Democrats are the ones who have denigrated women and demeaned them. They are the ones who have made them appear that their real interests are not jobs, safe neighborhoods and good schools for their kids, and for a better country and for more liberty, that what they’ve got to have is a prescription for birth control and getting a free abortion," he added later.

The comments come as female voices turned up their criticisms.

Cosmopolitan, the women's lifestyle magazine, slammed Huckabee in a post on their site and encouraged readers to weigh in on Twitter with the hashtag #CantControlMyLibido.

Soon, the topic was trending as the magazine retweeted readers' and tweeted its own pithy comments.

An hour and a half later, among those readers was the pop star Miley Cyrus.

"hey @Cosmopolitan I'm just sitting around unable to control my 'libido' & my 'reproductive system.' WBU? How's your Friday?" tweeted Cyrus in a post that drew thousands of retweets.

"Sexing randoms, the usual #CantControlMyLibido," replied Cosmo.

As the hashtag gained steam, other magazines and media companies started participating in the conversation.

"Sorry Huckabee RT @annabreslaw I was voted "Most Likely To Grind All Up Ons Things" because I #cantcontrolmylibido @GovMikeHuckabee," tweeted another women’s lifestyle magazine, Marie Claire.

"Gmail crashed because I #CantControlMyLibido @Cosmopolitan," tweeted fashion magazine Elle, in reference to a Google outage Friday afternoon.

"Miley Cyrus' #CantControlMyLibido tweet to @Cosmopolitan is everything (take that, Mike Huckabee):," tweeted E!, the entertainment channel.

American people need to grow up and stop wasting time on issues that are just being used as political footballs , by both parties.
Pay attention to the real problems your country is facing , lack of education for the youth and the rise of violence in schools and other public places , not a week goes by that one doesn't hear about a mass shooting and not a word or action from the administration. Where is Holder hiding , he will go down in history as one of the most useless Attorney Generals , you should have higher expectations of your elected Public Servants.

The very fact that this creep has a voice and there are some who listen, is proof beyond any doubt that this nation is doomed. When the country listens to nuts like this, we're not long for this world.

with comments like what Huckabee said, the GOP wonders why they can't court women into their party! I know a few women who were very offended by his comments!

Government in the lives of women and their libido. That is stupid. Just live and let live. Then all will reap the rewards of what they put forth. It is Simple, let all be responsible for them selves when it comes to screwing around. A little upbringing from responsible parents would go a long way to solve this problem that some seem to have.

Huck does make a valid point and government in our bedrooms is a lot to much.

When women have the right to choose is when women have control of their lives. If government takes away the freedom of birth control or abortion for that matter, government becomes the one in control. If republicans and teapublicans really understood freedom they would see this as being true.

Looks like Huck is vying for a seat in the 2016 clown car. With this speech I believe he has locked himself IN. Rand Paul also secured a position with his idea of restricting women to have only ONE child. Looks like the spare tire in the truck will have to make room for these two clowns.

Why does anybody pay any attention to what this fool says? After letting rapist and murders out of prison early so they could go commit more violent crimes he has absolutely nothing that will add to any conversation. Another Glen Beck wanna be. Except Beck finally admitted he was trying to tear the country apart and make a fortune doing it.

Don't ever underestimate the intelligence of women, Mr. Huckabee. We understand EXACTLY what you meant.

Pastor Huckabee speaks out that "women can't control their libido's" thus highlighting HIS effort to take control of those libido's and reproductive rights himself by withdrawing his support for contraceptives. There sure are a lot of GOP men sticking their nose into what certainly is not considered tasteful dialogue in America. How many of these men have wives, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces who they too want controlled by a man of Huckabee's persuasion.

I don't think half of you even read the comment he made before posting. so here are the cliff notes.

    1) He states, that if the DEMOCRATS want their image with women to be that they can't get by just being women without having the government provide for them, then thats too bad.

    2) He states it's unfortunate that the democrats position regarding women is not jobs, crime, or better schools and equal pay... it's free birth control and abortion on demand.

So... perhaps read the article, not just pounce on someone from the 'opposition' party because they said something or used language you didn't appreciate or understand within the context of the question they were asked.

    @ halfrancid

Repeat of an earlier comment: don't underestimate the intelligence of women to completely understand what is said (and re-said) by any one man. You end up looking as foolish as Huckabee.

The "war on women" is manufactured by the Obama administration. It doesn't exist. Women are doing just fine in this country. And the democrat women spouting off about this are portraying themselves as whining and incapable. Not prime examples of great women.

Morons. Anyone who cant understand that Huckabee was actually championing women is a complete idiot, cant speak the English language, not smart enough to have a basic conversation. These morons better stick to their Twitter world and not get involved in intelligent discussions.

Halfrancid and Lachappelle, Republicans want women to get an ultrasound before an abortion. It appears that Republicans will provide help to women only if Republicans think women need the help. When Republicans think that women need help, like an ultrasound before an abortion, Republicans insist that women get it. Whether women think they need the help is not relevant.

By the way, what is the Republican position on women besides restrictions on abortion?

What a fool. That he can't figure out the offense in his statement reveals his disconnect and/or misogyny. Let me help you, Huck – taking birth control does not equate to an inability to control one's libido.

These republicans are stone cold comedians. Next time you see one of them delivering a speech notice how they are able to not crack a smile while delivering the wackiest one liners. They can work Vegas after their political careers end.
