Will Democrats follow Republicans in primary and convention calendar changes?

Washington (CNN) - Days after the Republican National Committee made dramatic changes to their next presidential primary calendar, their Democratic rivals say they're moving toward using the same timeline as they've done in the past.

The RNC voted nearly unanimously Friday to condense the 2016 presidential nominating calendar, and they took steps toward moving the date of the next Republican National Convention from late August to June, the earliest either party has held their convention in nearly 70 years.

Clinton's biggest regret at State: Benghazi

Updated 1:33 p.m. ET, 1/27/2014

(CNN) - Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya was her biggest regret during the four years she served as America's top diplomat.

In a speech to the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, Clinton addressed a number of auto-related topics, including some of the more colorful cars former President Bill Clinton has owned and the fact that she hasn't driven a car since 1996.

State of the Union: The presidency - feeling feisty

(CNN) - After the start of the New Year, President Barack Obama's top advisers called a group of reporters into a small basement conference room and let it be known a new day had arrived at the White House.

Stung by a year of setbacks in 2013, senior administration officials described the President refreshed from his Hawaiian vacation and ready to embark on what they called a "year of action" - shorthand for pushing policy initiatives with or without the help of Congress.

State of the Union: Posture shifts post 9/11

(CNN) - In 2013, terrorists carried out the first major attack on U.S. soil since flying hijacked airplanes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon 12 years earlier.

The Boston Marathon bombing last April raised questions about why U.S. security agencies failed to prevent it.

State of the Union: Military - under the budget gun

(CNN) - The Iraq war is over and combat operations in Afghanistan end this year, but there's no evident peace dividend for the U.S. military.

Spending cuts from Washington budget deals have launched a transition started under former Defense Secretary Robert Gates to what he described as a leaner military shaped to deal with 21st Century challenges such as confronting terrorist-armed militias rather than full-fledged foreign armies.

State of the Union: Foreign policy - U.S. still a leader?

(CNN) - While a sluggish economic recovery keeps the national focus on domestic issues, the Obama administration enters its sixth year with an evolving foreign policy dealing with longstanding challenges in the Middle East and new priorities in Asia.

After ending the Iraq war and winding down combat operations in Afghanistan this year, President Barack Obama seeks to shift the perception of U.S. power from self-interested unilateralism to a more multilateral, cooperative approach.

State of the Union: Politics - a view from the right

(CNN) - This Tuesday, President Barack Obama will tell us that "The state of our Union is strong," as presidents usually do. He will be right: The American people are primed to create what they always have: a more prosperous and promising future.

However, the state of our politics and government is a different story.

State of the Union: Politics - a view from the left

(CNN) - The state of our Union is, in a word: healing.

We're coming back together, America. Of course, things are far from hunky-dory. Republicans are still waging a bloody civil war between the Cro-Magnons and the Neanderthals. And in Washington, some GOP politicians are treating the lawmaking process like the Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge: clogging it up out of pure political spite.

State of the Union: Congress - coming to life?

(CNN) - In recent months, the deeply divided U.S. Congress has shown signs of freeing itself from extended gridlock that caused an angry public to give it historically low approval ratings.

It adopted a budget without much partisan rancor, scaling back dreaded sequestration cuts in favor of more targeted spending reductions.
