Newt Gingrich to John Kerry: Resign

Updated 6:44 p.m. ET, 2/18/2014

Washington (CNN) - Newt Gingrich is amplifying his call for Secretary of State John Kerry to resign over his comments that climate change represents the biggest challenge “of our generation.”

"I think it's very troubling that our secretary of state … believes that climate change is a greater danger than a nuclear war," Gingrich said Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”

The CNN Crossfire co-host and former House speaker took to Twitter on Monday night, writing that "Every American who cares about national security must.demand Kerrey's (sic) resignation.A delusional secretary of state is dangerous to our safety."

Gingrich said he was “quite prepared to defend the argument that nuclear war is a far bigger threat to our society than is climate change.”

On Sunday, Kerry delivered one of the strongest speeches on climate change by any American official while visiting Indonesia, which has lost more than 40% of its tropical forests that store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere.

Kerry said "climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." He also called it "the greatest challenge of our generation."

Gingrich added in his CNN interview that Kerry was not a senator just giving “some wild speech to please the left,” noting that the top U.S. diplomat should be held to a "higher level of seriousness."

CNN has reached out to the State Department for reaction to Gingrich's comments.

Does anyone remember the broad consensus of scientific thought beck in the 1970's? Word then was that we are long overdue for an Ice Age, and the planet was cooling. How can 35 years of further data change the picture so drastically?
That is because scientists by their nature change and modify the current understanding based on new information. Unlike deniers, creationists etc. that never change their mind even when presented with evidence. That is why scientists don't bother to argue with them. What is the point? they are not science minded and deny evidence.

Kerry should resign for so many reasons, although I'm not sure his climate change talk is the biggest of them. The earth's climate is dynamic, and humans can and do have an impact, although not as influential as the impact of the sun... I think we can study and monitor the human impact as best we can, without giving the control freaks of government any more power over us subjects based on fear mongering...

I can't believe CNN would hire someone like Newt.He along with McCain and a lot of other politicians in both parties should be gone. What the U.S needs is a third party and term limits so once again America can become great. In today's world it's unfortunate the country is so hated by other nations.Today with what's going on in your political world is a laughing joke to the world.Get these long time people out and don't allow big business and individuals with money buy your rights. We need young thinking people that will work together and get things done properly.I'm a Canadian you are our big brother we depend on you please for your sake and ours it's time to get your house in order.

"Americans must reach a broad-based agreement on the environment. Adversarial politics has prevented a strategic consensus from driving our nation’s environmental vision. As a result, we have become a conflicted, confused, and timid polity when it comes to environmental concerns. Historically, America has been a decisive nation. We must now take the necessary steps to return our country to a position of leadership on the environment. " – Newt Gingrich (2009)

Cold weather can barrel through many parts of the country — Georgia, Florida, Arkansas — where people aren't used to sub-freezing temperatures.

Climate change is widely held as a major reason that natural disasters are becoming more common and magnified in force. I don't have the statistics, but it is safe to assume that natural disasters kill, injure, and destroy the lives of far more people every year than does terrorism. I don't know where I'd put it in the hierarchy of problems we face today, but it is certainly on the list, and the real scare is that a good deal of Americans deny it. Then again, a good deal of Americans deny evolution, so maybe this shouldn't surprise me.

Believing anything that Newt his Tea partiers and republican cronies say about global warming being a hoax, is akin to believing what doctors hired by the tobacco industry said years ago about there being no definitive link between smoking and lung cancer.

the breathless Fruit Gingrich is joining the modern tradition of making a drunken fool of himself on twitter. Hysterical fluff attended by laughable punctuation and grandiose proclamations signifying nada.

When our grandchildren ask why our leaders arond the turn of the Century didn't address global waming as a threat, people like Newt will be long gone. Typical of the values of the Right, "Use the planet and it's resources to make as much money during our time on Earth...and future generations be damned". In our Country's 237 year history, we have not been at war for like 22 years.

Newt needs to read the "Sixth Extinction." The climate is changing. As a farmer I know that. But I don't know why, and Newt who rarely gets off asphalt and concrete and asphalt certainly does not know. Anyone who things 7 BILLION of any multicelled creature, be it humans or mice, does not have an effect on their environment is a nitwit.

If Newt Gingrich believes there is anyone left who values his opinion, or considers him to be objective, then we know who's "delusional". Go away, Newt.

Kerry needs to go and take his Boss with him. The world thinks that the US is a joke
The world thinks the US is a bunch of Republican murderer's responsible for the genocide of 500,000 in Iraq.
Joke? Yes, after the TeaKlan tried to destroy the American government ...

The Boss will hand over Leadership to the former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who was one of the best ever.

And, most likely, John Kerry will continue being a great Secretary of State until 2024.

    Good times for America.

I for one would never do anything that Newt asked for . This guy is a joke and has an over inflated opinion about himself. I hate this program because this guy is a crybaby and is against everything I stand for. Don't like the other members either. All they do is talk over each other and never listen. If I want to watch a bunch of adults act like children I will at least watch a program where I like the individuals

Newt Gingrich "if they win, we lose" philosophy in the House is the reason we are in grid lock today. . . I would discount anything from Speaker Gingrich as pure partisan politics . . . and I've met him and have great respect for him outside of the political arena....

I wish coservatives would simply say what should have been done about foreign policy that was more to their liking/ It was a lose-lose situation no matter how you looked at it. Repubilcans are blaming a lack of U.S. response. with military aciton or by arming rebels, is the reason for the presence of Al-Qaeda in Syria. They say that the Russians are moving in and filling the vacuum. My what lies they tell.

There were no Al-Qaeda combatants in Syria before the civil war, just as there was no group calling itself "Al-Qaeda in Iraq" before the U.S. started a war and overthrew the government. The Russians have been in Syria for decades. The Assad goverment is nothing more than a satellite state for the Russians. Don't forget that the Russians have their only warm water naval port on the Syrian coastline. If Assad goes, then that puts the port's future in question. The Russians are not giving up that port, and will engage anyone's military to ensure that it stays in "safe" hands.

Despite what Republicans say about what the U.S. should have been done Syria is, and always has been, a Russian problem, and one which the Russians need to solve.

  25. Newt Gingrich is a Genius

It's very delusional to listen to renowned scientists about things like the global climate and whether it's changes are potentially caused by human interactions. You're right Newt, that's delusional.
