(CNN) - Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has joined calls from key Republicans urging Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to veto legislation that critics say would codify discrimination against gays and lesbians in that state.

Romney's message followed tweets from Arizona's Republican senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, urging Brewer to reject SB1062, which would allow businesses in the state to refuse service to gays and lesbians based on religious beliefs.
By contrast, President Barack Obama, who has evolved into one of the nation's leading proponents of gay rights, has yet to personally weigh in on the legislation.
Asked about the Arizona bill by reporters, White House Spokesman Jay Carney described SB 1062 as a "pretty intolerant proposed law."
"As a practice, we don't generally weigh in on every piece of legislation under consideration in the states," Carney said.
"I think the President's position on equality for LGBT Americans and opportunity for all is very well known. And he believes that all of us, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity should be treated fairly and equally, with dignity and respect," Carney added.

CNN, one more time . . . . . WHO CARES!!!!!
The President has nothing to say because it's about the crazy pointy finger witch from AZ. You have even less because we didn't
care as a country in 2012 and we as heck could care less now.
Go buy yourself another elevator or car. Just no more dogs!
President Romney has spoken.
CNN, did you miss the fact that MittWitt lost? Why are you still campaigning for him?
Romney and McCain took the high road in this issue. Extremely noteworthy is Obama's unwillingness to weigh in on this important issue. He sure doesn't have a problem weighing in on Union issues and health care issues at the state level. LGBT community should be aware they have no friend in the White House.
Tomorrow he will change his mind. I think Mittens is under the impression that the Republican Party is going to draft him for their presidential candidate in 2016.
Where are all the liberals who were trying to silence Mitt now?
So what do all you Conservative haters who try to characterize people as something they are not think about high ranking Republicans saying this bill should be vetoed?
See he never was your candidate. Way too moderate. He doesn't represent the knuckle dragging GOP.
I am impressed that a Republican would publicly back not killing or discriminating gays. What next, dialogue? Compromise? GASP
aaaaaannnnnndddd he didn;t win
Thank you Mr. Romney and welcome to the Democratic party. Your party will now turn their backs on you. Don't worry, they are a dying breed anyway
Just saw on NBC Nightly News a 300+ pound protester saying gay is a sin. Apparently gluttony no longer is. If only hypocrisy was in the 10 commandments.
It's easy to see why Obama has remained silent on this issue....and that would because as soon as he were to come out publicly against it, each and every Republican would be forced to immediately oppose him.
No, no...It's best to let the Republicans take care of this themselves. So far, it seems like the sane minded ones have finally grown a spine and found one thing to openly opposed their crazies.
I'm starting to wonder if this thing was passed only to give Arizona legislators a cheap photo-op calling for its veto. Can't find any other reason it would have passed in the first place.
Smile for your free portrait of courage!
Who is this "Romney" that you speak of?
Never liked Romney, but it's big of him to put his foot down and support whats right! Never thought I'd say this, but way to go!
While I disagree with many of Mr. Romney's positions- this is his business acumen at work. This bill is an economic disaster for our state, and Mr. Romney has appropriately identified the economic reasons for vetoing this bill.
Troubling however, is why the GOP pushes someone's "religious freedom" over society's civil rights. This is not the deep South and it isn't the 1950s.
The longer this goes on, the greater the economic damage, and more damage done to Arizona's reputation.
Enough! Common sense, please!
Even a Southern redneck like myself knows that Jim Crow laws are wrong.
What, I thought I read 10,000 comments in another article covering this story that the Republicans were hate mongers. What will the far left say now?
I see no problem with this bill the rest of the people should have rights too!
Why on Earth would Obama weigh in? Like, duh, Captain Obvious speaking. As Carney pointed out, the bill completely contradicts anything and everything Obama and the Democratic Party stand for. And considering this is an election year, why not keep that door wide open and let Republicans shoot themselves in the foot, again, with yet another amusing demonstration of their delightful "minority outreach" programs in action?
Oh, wait. Obama's strategy is all wrong. If he weighs in against it, Brewer won't veto it just based on general GOP principles of disagreeing violently with anything he says. So never mind–I take it all back.
Arizona and Kansas should just join together as the same state...
The gay political activism that is corrupting American children in the public education system beginning in kindergarten will not stop until the death penalty is enacted for the crime of homosexuality. God in His wisdom instituted this punishment to protect the family especially children. It is the duty of sensible Americans to put God's law on the US Constitution. Article VIII to the Constitution makes God's law American law.
The bill is dead if a Mormon Republican doesn't even support it.
The LDS Church waited until the late 70's to consider African Americans as equal.
(That shows just how far behind the times... the Tea Party is)
@GovBrewer Someday some of your descendants may be gay, if not right now.
