Obama tries to show some R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Washington (CNN) - President Obama celebrated the music that shaped "our American story" with some of the biggest female music legends Thursday night at the White House but came up a little lacking when he tried to show his R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

The White House welcomed the performances by American musical icons Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheridge, and Patti Labelle as well as contemporary female artists Ariana Grande, Janelle Monae, and Jill Scott.

While the President was paying tribute to Aretha Franklin, he had a hard time with the spelling of a word famously spelled out in one of her best known songs.

"When Aretha first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her, she had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans, and women, and then everyone who felt marginalized because of what they looked like or who they loved," Obama said to chuckles from the audience.

The spelling error did not bring down the energy of the night as Patti LaBelle kicked off the performances with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," bringing the President and First Lady to their feet.

The "Women of Soul" event was part of the "In Performance at the White House" series that has honored the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Let's just hope that if the President ever welcomes the Village People that he practices his Y-M-C-A.

Well being that he rarely got any respect from half the country maybe why he's forgotten how to spell it

How about telling us how he misspelled it, otherwise this is a boring story.

    Obama's potato moment...

The media wailed on Quayle for a month about a misspelling, I wonder how long this story will last.

    I'm guessing not long.

I'm surprised to see this story here. ABC didn't have it. Neither did NBC (but of course) or CBS. Had George W. said the same thing, it would have been the lead story on all of them.

He doesn't get any respect anyway, so who cares.

In the Bush era this would have been the lead story!

BTW: the error was Bush's fault.

"Stay in school kids, so you can get a good job!"
I guess he forgot to tell "the kids" to actually learn something while they are staying in school...oy!

How is this news? It seems like the quality of CNN deteriorates each day.

Interesting he misspelled a word that denotes something a lot of people don't do towards him. Ironic indeed.

Was this party hosted by BET? He sure seems to put more(onic) energy into these Hollyweird type appearances than he does running this country. Can't wait til he and Michele pack their bags and head back to good ole corrupt Chicago where they'll be welcomed and feel at home.

Well, he obviously just flubbed it, but interesting the difference in reporting when it's an Obama flub, compared to a Bush flub.

he doesn't know the meaning of the word, so it's not surprising that he doesn't know how to spell it. SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW....explains his terms in the white house so far, that's why he stood up..... finally...a theme song!

It's interesting how people compare this to Dan Quayle's misspelling. Obama forgot a letter during a event at the White House, and it wasn't brought up again that night. Quayle spelled "potato" with an e in a class full of kids, and insisted that he spelled it correctly. Not quite the same, to be honest. Obama made a faux pas, while Quayle was just downright stupid.

    Dominican mama 4 Obama

    Fair is Fair
People died in Benghazi, but as Hillary so elegantly lectured us, let's just get over it.
    -----------------
You must've heard that lecture in your dreams because she never said that.
Furthermore she never even implied that.
Sometimes, Fair, it is almost as if you just can't help yourself.

Ummmmmmmm... looks like you got suckered by a fake Fair...

Perhaps he misspoke – or we misheard – but Obama spells very well and knows how to spell respect. This is a pretty stupid story.

" Remember thaose embarassing instances in his campaigns when the teleprompter malfunctioned?"

Nope. Although, I do remember a non-teleprompter GOP event at which Obama completely excoriated Lyin' Ryan for his budget proposal haha...god that was hilarious.
