Obama tries to show some R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Washington (CNN) - President Obama celebrated the music that shaped "our American story" with some of the biggest female music legends Thursday night at the White House but came up a little lacking when he tried to show his R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

The White House welcomed the performances by American musical icons Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheridge, and Patti Labelle as well as contemporary female artists Ariana Grande, Janelle Monae, and Jill Scott.

While the President was paying tribute to Aretha Franklin, he had a hard time with the spelling of a word famously spelled out in one of her best known songs.

"When Aretha first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her, she had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans, and women, and then everyone who felt marginalized because of what they looked like or who they loved," Obama said to chuckles from the audience.

The spelling error did not bring down the energy of the night as Patti LaBelle kicked off the performances with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," bringing the President and First Lady to their feet.

The "Women of Soul" event was part of the "In Performance at the White House" series that has honored the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Let's just hope that if the President ever welcomes the Village People that he practices his Y-M-C-A.

Since we still have Guantanemo Bay and the Patriot Act, it's not a surprise that he cannot spell the word. He just phoned in his performance ...

The thing is, he won't be trying to get (re) elected. The only relevant question will be, "Can Hillary spell it?"

If this was a republican he would be ridiculed beyond belief. Either way I am not an Obama supporter but who cares everyone has mental lapses at times.

Funny! So we could start calling him President Quale, except that Dan Quale knew there are 50 states and not 57. Maybe a few too many drugs during your formative years, Mr. President, that sure does explain a lot!

Well, I could go on and on about how as an executive secretary (prior to the internet) I spend three quarters of my working days correcting the spelling (using whiteout on a manual typewriter) of some of the most highly educated scientists in defense research; but you know, I doubt it would really make an impact for those commenting on this particular thread.

I see that as more a slip of the tongue than a misspell. Since it was the first 'E' vowel, clearly as a Harvard Grad Lawyer, he passed his English/Grammer courses probably better than any of you in the Media and TeaKKK-party!

He flubbed it. He knew he was flubbing it. He didn't go and try to prove an index card was correctly spelling it, he didn't try to blame the index card, and he didn't try to deflect the flub.

    Now, you're free to compare.

Makes you wonder about the sealed records of his education, probably a poor student. I'd lay money that if those records were unsealed, they would reveal he was not born in the US. The copy I've seen of his birth cirtificate looks poorly photoshopped.

Don't forget, according to Obama, we have 57 states as well. He's made SO many gaffes but the media of course let's all this slide. In their eyes he's so brilliant. He's killing our economy, our health insurance, thanks to Obamascare, is in cardiac arrest and we now see ourselves sticking our nose in the Russia conflict. I hope you're not all asleep in 2016...keep voting Dem and we will implode!!!
