Washington (CNN) - After announcing Ukriane-related sanctions targeting some Russian officials and others, U.S. President Barack Obama told reporters Monday that the United States wants to make it clear to Russia "that further provocation (in Ukraine) will do nothing" except diminish Russia's standing in the world.
He said he believes "there's still a path to resolve" the Ukrainian situation with Russia diplomatically. That would include, he said, Russia pulling its forces back to bases, deploying international monitors, and Russia engaging in dialogue with the Ukrainian government.
1921-1945 Crimea was an autonomous republic within the USSR. The Crimeans suffered terribly during WWII as its population fought a guerrilla war against the Nazis. After the War Stalin deported the entire Tartar population. This was soon followed by those of Rumanian, Bulgarian and Greek heritage. At the same time a large number of Russians were "granted" holdings there. Most of the Russians who have lived in the Crimea trace their roots to that forced deportation and land seizure.
2/19/54, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree on the transfer of the Crimean region of the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR, making it a state within the Ukraine as the Ukraine was a state within the USSR.
When the USSR collapsed in 1991, a referendum confirmed that the population of the Crimea wanted to remain a part of the Ukraine.
54% of the Crimean voters supported independence with a 60% turnout (in Sevastopol 57% supported independence).
The United States has become a joke on the world stage because of Obama. He wants America to become weak – and he's succeeding. The democrats should lose every seat possible in the Senate and House – then the Presidency!

When Texas gov. Rick Perry threatened to secede, did McCain visit Austin and promise weapons?

No, but I think McCain reflexively uttered "we are all Texans...".

i sense there may be a bit of sarcasm in your comment. Not really sure.
It may have been one of the not-totally-rare comments where you got it right.
Bill from GA. Thank you. I do enjoy reading most of your comments.

Wake up....... Pres.Obama has no intention to bomb anyone, he removed all the missiles for defense from the Polish and East German borders, because Putin told him to do so.

"East German borders"? When was the last time you saw a map?

So, Rudy, Whatta ya think, 90% before the Ruskies came, or 98% before the Ruskies came?
And what do you base your numbers on, Sir??
Repubs and Dems are just making this situation worse. There is nothing the US can do and Putin knows this. We did the same thing in Bosnia.

Well, military action against Russia has to be off the tableI. I think a strongly worded statement is in order.

I agree. Military action against Russians on Russia's border would be most unwise. I assume that you feel that economic sanctions can also speak louder than words. The delicate statement can introduce the sanctions.
If George W & Cheney were Prez, they'd order the Military Invasion & Occupation of POLAND !! Nah, no OIL.

Nothing more than the mere fact that that strong of a majority would not have waited for the Russians to almost completely take over their government and military before holding such a vote. Seeing how it was the newly installed Russian/Crimean government is the one that actually called for the public referendum, I think the reason for the high percentage is clear. In fact, the results may not even be accurate. I think you already know that. If you don't, then you should.

From all the news from Crimea that I have seen, the reporters have a hard time finding anyone who opposes the Russians. They essentially ARE Russians. We (the USA) are acting like fools to tell them otherwise.
And you ignored the part of my question: What percent of Crimeans do want to lean toward EU, as opposed to Russia?
Do YOU think a majority of Crimeans want to side with the EU? Do you think even a large minority side with the EU?
Google / U.S and russian Launch ready Nuclear weapons/ Nuclear Age . . . . When u hav time none bias? site
That should put a scare into Putin. Maybe next we'll have missiles in Cuba then we can really get tough!

Right wing fantasy land. Perhaps the "East German border" is on the map documenting the War on Christmas.
@Rudy, Agreed. There were huge voting inconsistencies reported, but this was nothing more than an exercise to put lipstick on the pig. Results (and magnitude) a foregone conclusion, otherwise voting would not have been permitted.

What else can really be done? Can't do anything militarily. Economic sanctions on a country like Russia is the equivalent of a fart in a tornado. Indeed, a strongly worded statement is in order. It will change things in the same measure as anything else – bupkiss.
Forget about Russia, where we're you when they did invade Geotgia, Chechnya. Better fix our HOME-FRONT PROBLEMS. PASS JOBS-BILL, TIGHTEN IMMIGRATION ETC, VOTER REFORM, TERM-LIMITS ETC LONG OVERDUE.
General mixed up Radical Right Rant: Obama is doing nothing – taking over – doing too little – doing too much.
